Luke 1
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to arrange a narrative of those things which are fully believed among us,
Puisque plusieurs ont entrepris de mettre en ordre le récit des événements qui se sont accomplis parmi nous,
2 even as they were delivered to us by those who were eye-witnesses from the beginning and became ministers of the word,
comme nous l'ont transmis ceux qui, dès le début, ont été témoins oculaires et serviteurs de la parole,
3 it seemed good to me also, having accurately traced up all things from the first, to write to thee a connected account, most excellent Theophilus,
il m'a semblé bon, ayant dès le début suivi exactement le cours de toutes choses, de t'écrire avec ordre, très excellent Théophile,
4 that thou mightst know the exact truth with regard to those things in which thou wast instructed.
afin que tu saches avec certitude les choses dans lesquelles tu as été instruit.
5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zachariah, of the course of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.
Il y avait, du temps d'Hérode, roi de Judée, un prêtre nommé Zacharie, de la division sacerdotale d'Abija. Il avait une femme parmi les filles d'Aaron, et son nom était Élisabeth.
6 And they were both righteous in the sight of God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
Ils étaient tous deux justes devant Dieu, marchant sans reproche dans tous les commandements et ordonnances du Seigneur.
7 And they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both far advanced in years.
Mais ils n'eurent pas d'enfant, car Élisabeth était stérile, et ils étaient tous deux avancés en âge.
8 And it came to pass, that, while he was serving as priest before God in the order of his course,
Or, tandis qu'il exerçait la fonction de prêtre devant Dieu selon l'ordre de sa division,
9 according to the custom of the priesthood the lot fell to him to go into the temple of the Lord and burn the incense.
selon la coutume de la fonction de prêtre, son lot était d'entrer dans le temple du Seigneur et d'y brûler des parfums.
10 And the whole multitude of the people was praying without at the time of the incense.
Toute la multitude du peuple priait dehors à l'heure de l'encens.
11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
Un ange du Seigneur lui apparut, se tenant à droite de l'autel des parfums.
12 And Zachariah was troubled at the sight, and fear fell upon him.
Zacharie fut troublé en le voyant, et la peur le saisit.
13 But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name John.
Mais l'ange lui dit: « Ne crains pas, Zacharie, car ta demande a été exaucée. Ta femme, Élisabeth, t'enfantera un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jean.
14 And thou wilt have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice for his birth.
Tu auras de la joie et de l'allégresse, et beaucoup se réjouiront de sa naissance.
15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and will drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his very birth.
Car il sera grand aux yeux du Seigneur, et il ne boira ni vin ni boisson forte. Il sera rempli de l'Esprit Saint, dès le sein de sa mère.
16 And many of the sons of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God.
Il ramènera beaucoup de fils d'Israël à l'Éternel, leur Dieu.
17 And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.
Il le précédera avec l'esprit et la puissance d'Élie, pour ramener le cœur des pères vers les enfants, et les désobéissants à la sagesse des justes, afin de préparer un peuple à l'Éternel. »
18 And Zachariah said to the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife is far advanced in years.
Zacharie dit à l'ange: « Comment puis-je en être sûr? Car je suis un vieil homme, et ma femme est bien avancée en âge. »
19 And the angel answering said to him, I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to thee, and to tell thee these glad tidings.
L'ange lui répondit: « Je suis Gabriel, qui se tient dans la présence de Dieu. J'ai été envoyé pour te parler et t'annoncer cette bonne nouvelle.
20 And lo! thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, until the day when these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their season.
Voici, tu te tairas et tu ne pourras pas parler jusqu'au jour où ces choses arriveront, parce que tu n'as pas cru à mes paroles, qui s'accompliront en leur temps. »
21 And the people were looking for Zachariah, and wondering that he remained so long in the temple.
Le peuple attendait Zacharie et s'étonnait qu'il tarde à entrer dans le temple.
22 And on coming out, he was not able to speak to them; and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he was beckoning to them, and remained speechless.
Lorsqu'il sortit, il ne put leur parler. Ils comprirent qu'il avait eu une vision dans le temple. Il continua à leur faire des signes, et il resta muet.
23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were completed, that he returned to his house.
Lorsque les jours de son service furent accomplis, il s'en alla dans sa maison.
24 And after those days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
Après ces jours-là, Élisabeth, sa femme, devint enceinte, et elle se cacha pendant cinq mois, en disant:
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me to take away my reproach among men.
« C'est ainsi que le Seigneur m'a fait pendant les jours où il m'a regardée, pour ôter mon opprobre parmi les hommes. »
26 And in her sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, called Nazareth,
Au sixième mois, l'ange Gabriel fut envoyé par Dieu dans une ville de Galilée, nommée Nazareth,
27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
auprès d'une vierge promise en mariage à un homme du nom de Joseph, de la maison de David. Le nom de la vierge était Marie.
28 And the angel came in to her and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored! the Lord is with thee.
Après être entré, l'ange lui dit: « Réjouis-toi, toi qui es si favorisée! Le Seigneur est avec toi. Tu es bénie entre toutes les femmes! »
29 And she was troubled at the words, and was considering what this salutation could mean.
Mais quand elle le vit, elle fut très troublée par cette parole, et elle réfléchit à la manière dont elle pouvait être saluée.
30 And the angel said to her, Fear not, Mary; for thou hast found favor with God.
L'ange lui dit: « Ne crains pas, Marie, car tu as trouvé grâce devant Dieu.
31 And lo! thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and hear a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.
Voici que tu concevras dans ton sein et tu donneras naissance à un fils, et tu lui donneras le nom de Jésus.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of David his father;
Il sera grand et on l'appellera le Fils du Très-Haut. Le Seigneur Dieu lui donnera le trône de son père David,
33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. (aiōn g165)
et il régnera sur la maison de Jacob pour toujours. Il n'y aura pas de fin à son règne. » (aiōn g165)
34 Then said Mary to the angel, How shall this be, since I know not a man?
Marie dit à l'ange: « Comment cela se peut-il, puisque je suis vierge? »
35 And the angel answering said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon thee, and the power of the Most High will overshadow thee; wherefore the holy one that is to be born will be called the Son of God.
L'ange lui répondit: « L'Esprit Saint viendra sur toi, et la puissance du Très-Haut te couvrira de son ombre. C'est pourquoi aussi le saint qui naîtra de toi sera appelé Fils de Dieu.
36 And lo! Elizabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who is called barren.
Voici qu'Élisabeth, ta parente, a conçu un fils dans sa vieillesse, et c'est le sixième mois de celle qu'on appelait stérile.
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.
Car rien de ce qui est dit par Dieu n'est impossible. »
38 And Mary said, Lo, the handmaid of the Lord! May it be to me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Marie dit: « Voici la servante du Seigneur; qu'il me soit fait selon ta parole. » Puis l'ange s'éloigna d'elle.
39 And Mary arose and went in those days into the hill-country with haste, into a city of Judah.
En ces jours-là, Marie se leva et se rendit en hâte dans la montagne, dans une ville de Juda,
40 And she entered the house of Zachariah, and saluted Elizabeth.
elle entra dans la maison de Zacharie et salua Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit,
Lorsqu'Elisabeth entendit la salutation de Marie, l'enfant tressaillit dans son sein, et Elisabeth fut remplie du Saint-Esprit.
42 and cried out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women; and blessed is the fruit of thy womb!
Elle cria d'une voix forte et dit: « Tu es bénie entre toutes les femmes, et le fruit de tes entrailles est béni!
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
Pourquoi suis-je si favorisée, pour que la mère de mon Seigneur vienne à moi?
44 For lo! as soon as the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, the babe leaped in my womb in exultation.
Car voici, quand la voix de ta salutation est parvenue à mes oreilles, le bébé a bondi de joie dans mon sein!
45 And blessed is she who hath believed that there will be an accomplishment of those things which were told her from the Lord.
Heureuse celle qui a cru, car les choses qui lui ont été dites de la part du Seigneur s'accompliront! »
46 And Mary said, My soul magnifieth the Lord,
Marie a dit, « Mon âme magnifie le Seigneur.
47 and my spirit hath exulted in God my Saviour;
Mon esprit s'est réjoui en Dieu mon Sauveur,
48 for he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaiden. For lo! from this time all generations will call me blessed;
car il a regardé l'humble condition de son serviteur. Car voici qu'à partir de maintenant, toutes les générations me diront béni.
49 for the Mighty One hath done great things for me; and holy is his name;
Car celui qui est puissant a fait de grandes choses pour moi. Saint est son nom.
50 and his mercy is from generation to generation on them that fear him.
Sa miséricorde s'étend de génération en génération sur ceux qui le craignent.
51 He hath wrought mightily with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the device of their heart.
Il a montré de la force avec son bras. Il a dispersé les orgueilleux dans l'imagination de leur cœur.
52 He hath cast down princes from thrones, and exalted men of low degree.
Il a fait tomber les princes de leurs trônes, et a élevé les humbles.
53 The hungry he hath filled with good things, and the rich he hath sent away empty.
Il a rassasié de bonnes choses les affamés. Il a renvoyé les riches à vide.
54 He hath given help to Israel his servant, in remembrance of his mercy
Il a secouru Israël, son serviteur, pour qu'il se souvienne de la miséricorde,
comme il a parlé à nos pères, à Abraham et à sa descendance pour toujours. » (aiōn g165)
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Marie resta avec elle environ trois mois, puis elle retourna dans sa maison.
57 Now Elizabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
Le temps où Élisabeth devait accoucher s'accomplit, et elle donna naissance à un fils.
58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had showed great mercy toward her; and they rejoiced with her.
Ses voisins et ses proches apprirent que le Seigneur avait magnifié sa miséricorde envers elle, et ils se réjouirent avec elle.
59 And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they were about to call him Zachariah, after the name of his father.
Le huitième jour, on vint pour circoncire l'enfant, et l'on voulut l'appeler Zacharie, du nom de son père.
60 And his mother answering said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
Sa mère répondit: « Non, mais on l'appellera Jean. »
61 And they said to her, There is no one of thy kindred that is called by this name.
Ils lui dirent: « Il n'y a personne parmi tes proches qui soit appelé de ce nom. »
62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him named.
Ils firent des signes à son père, pour savoir comment il voulait qu'on l'appelle.
63 And he asked for a writing-tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they all marveled.
Il demanda une tablette et écrivit: « Son nom est Jean. » Ils étaient tous émerveillés.
64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue was loosed; and he spoke, blessing God.
Aussitôt sa bouche s'ouvrit et sa langue se délia, et il parla en bénissant Dieu.
65 And fear came on all that dwelt around them; and all these things were talked of throughout the whole of the hill-country of Judaea.
La crainte s'empara de tous les habitants des environs, et l'on parlait de toutes ces paroles dans toute la montagne de Judée.
66 And all that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What then will this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.
Tous ceux qui les entendaient les fixaient dans leur cœur, en disant: « Que sera donc cet enfant? » La main du Seigneur était avec lui.
67 And Zachariah his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,
Son père Zacharie fut rempli du Saint-Esprit, et il prophétisa, disant,
68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel! for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
« Béni soit le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, car il a visité et racheté son peuple;
69 and hath raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of David his servant, —
et il nous a suscité une corne de salut dans la maison de son serviteur David.
(comme il l'a dit par la bouche de ses saints prophètes qui existent depuis des temps immémoriaux), (aiōn g165)
71 salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us,
le salut de nos ennemis et de la main de tous ceux qui nous haïssent;
72 to accomplish his mercy toward our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant,
pour faire preuve de clémence envers nos pères, pour se souvenir de sa sainte alliance,
73 the oath which he swore to Abraham our father,
le serment qu'il a fait à Abraham, notre père,
74 to grant to us, that being delivered from the hand of our enemies, we might worship him without fear,
de nous accorder que, délivrés de la main de nos ennemis, doivent le servir sans crainte,
75 in holiness and righteousness before him, all our days.
dans la sainteté et la droiture devant lui tous les jours de notre vie.
76 And thou, child, shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shalt go in advance before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,
Et toi, mon enfant, tu seras appelé prophète du Très-Haut; car tu iras devant la face du Seigneur pour préparer ses voies,
77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the remission of their sins
pour donner la connaissance du salut à son peuple par la rémission de ses péchés,
78 through the tender mercy of our God, whereby the day-spring from on high hath visited us,
à cause de la tendre miséricorde de notre Dieu, par lequel l'aube d'en haut nous visitera,
79 to give light to those sitting in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
pour éclairer ceux qui sont assis dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort; pour guider nos pieds sur le chemin de la paix. »
80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit; and was in the deserts till the day of his manifestation to Israel.
L'enfant grandissait et devenait fort en esprit, et il était dans le désert jusqu'au jour de son apparition publique en Israël.
