< Luke 9 >
1 And he called together the twelve, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.
tataḥ paraṁ sa dvādaśaśiṣyānāhūya bhūtān tyājayituṁ rogān pratikarttuñca tebhyaḥ śaktimādhipatyañca dadau|
2 And he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God, and to heal.
aparañca īśvarīyarājyasya susaṁvādaṁ prakāśayitum rogiṇāmārogyaṁ karttuñca preraṇakāle tān jagāda|
3 And he said to them, Take nothing for the journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money, nor have two coats apiece.
yātrārthaṁ yaṣṭi rvastrapuṭakaṁ bhakṣyaṁ mudrā dvitīyavastram, eṣāṁ kimapi mā gṛhlīta|
4 And into whatever house ye enter, there abide, and from it take your departure.
yūyañca yanniveśanaṁ praviśatha nagaratyāgaparyyanataṁ tanniveśane tiṣṭhata|
5 And whoever shall not receive you, shake off, when ye leave that city, even the dust from your feet as a testimony against them.
tatra yadi kasyacit purasya lokā yuṣmākamātithyaṁ na kurvvanti tarhi tasmānnagarād gamanakāle teṣāṁ viruddhaṁ sākṣyārthaṁ yuṣmākaṁ padadhūlīḥ sampātayata|
6 And they departed, and went through the towns publishing the glad tidings, and performing cures everywhere.
atha te prasthāya sarvvatra susaṁvādaṁ pracārayituṁ pīḍitān svasthān karttuñca grāmeṣu bhramituṁ prārebhire|
7 And Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was taking place, and was perplexed; because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead;
etarhi herod rājā yīśoḥ sarvvakarmmaṇāṁ vārttāṁ śrutvā bhṛśamudvivije
8 and by some, that Elijah had appeared; and by others, that one of the old prophets had risen.
yataḥ kecidūcuryohan śmaśānādudatiṣṭhat| kecidūcuḥ, eliyo darśanaṁ dattavān; evamanyalokā ūcuḥ pūrvvīyaḥ kaścid bhaviṣyadvādī samutthitaḥ|
9 But Herod said, John I beheaded; but who is this, about whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him.
kintu heroduvāca yohanaḥ śiro'hamachinadam idānīṁ yasyedṛkkarmmaṇāṁ vārttāṁ prāpnomi sa kaḥ? atha sa taṁ draṣṭum aicchat|
10 And the apostles returned and told him what they had done; and taking them with him, he withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida.
anantaraṁ preritāḥ pratyāgatya yāni yāni karmmāṇi cakrustāni yīśave kathayāmāsuḥ tataḥ sa tān baitsaidānāmakanagarasya vijanaṁ sthānaṁ nītvā guptaṁ jagāma|
11 But the multitudes, when they knew it, followed him; and he welcomed them, and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who had need of healing.
paścāl lokāstad viditvā tasya paścād yayuḥ; tataḥ sa tān nayan īśvarīyarājyasya prasaṅgamuktavān, yeṣāṁ cikitsayā prayojanam āsīt tān svasthān cakāra ca|
12 And when the day began to decline, the twelve came and said to him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages around, and the open country, and lodge, and get food; for we are here in a desert place.
aparañca divāvasanne sati dvādaśaśiṣyā yīśorantikam etya kathayāmāsuḥ, vayamatra prāntarasthāne tiṣṭhāmaḥ, tato nagarāṇi grāmāṇi gatvā vāsasthānāni prāpya bhakṣyadravyāṇi kretuṁ jananivahaṁ bhavān visṛjatu|
13 But he said to them, Do ye give them food. And they said, We have not more than five loaves and two fishes, unless we ourselves should go and buy food for l all these people.
tadā sa uvāca, yūyameva tān bhejayadhvaṁ; tataste procurasmākaṁ nikaṭe kevalaṁ pañca pūpā dvau matsyau ca vidyante, ataeva sthānāntaram itvā nimittameteṣāṁ bhakṣyadravyeṣu na krīteṣu na bhavati|
14 They were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them lie down in companies of fifty.
tatra prāyeṇa pañcasahasrāṇi puruṣā āsan|
15 And they did so, and made them all lie down.
tadā sa śiṣyān jagāda pañcāśat pañcāśajjanaiḥ paṁktīkṛtya tānupaveśayata, tasmāt te tadanusāreṇa sarvvalokānupaveśayāpāsuḥ|
16 Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and broke and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude.
tataḥ sa tān pañca pūpān mīnadvayañca gṛhītvā svargaṁ vilokyeśvaraguṇān kīrttayāñcakre bhaṅktā ca lokebhyaḥ pariveṣaṇārthaṁ śiṣyeṣu samarpayāmbabhūva|
17 And they ate, and were all filled; and what remained to them of fragments was taken up, twelve baskets.
tataḥ sarvve bhuktvā tṛptiṁ gatā avaśiṣṭānāñca dvādaśa ḍallakān saṁjagṛhuḥ|
18 And it came to pass as he was in a private place praying, that his disciples were with him; and he asked them, saying, Who do the multitudes say that I am?
athaikadā nirjane śiṣyaiḥ saha prārthanākāle tān papraccha, lokā māṁ kaṁ vadanti?
19 And they answering said, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets hath risen.
tataste prācuḥ, tvāṁ yohanmajjakaṁ vadanti; kecit tvām eliyaṁ vadanti, pūrvvakālikaḥ kaścid bhaviṣyadvādī śmaśānād udatiṣṭhad ityapi kecid vadanti|
20 And he said to them, But who do ye say that I am? And Peter answering said, The Christ of God.
tadā sa uvāca, yūyaṁ māṁ kaṁ vadatha? tataḥ pitara uktavān tvam īśvarābhiṣiktaḥ puruṣaḥ|
21 But he strictly charged them, and commanded them to tell this to no one;
tadā sa tān dṛḍhamādideśa, kathāmetāṁ kasmaicidapi mā kathayata|
22 saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be put to death, and rise again on the third day.
sa punaruvāca, manuṣyaputreṇa vahuyātanā bhoktavyāḥ prācīnalokaiḥ pradhānayājakairadhyāpakaiśca sovajñāya hantavyaḥ kintu tṛtīyadivase śmaśānāt tenotthātavyam|
23 And he said to all, If any one chooseth to come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
aparaṁ sa sarvvānuvāca, kaścid yadi mama paścād gantuṁ vāñchati tarhi sa svaṁ dāmyatu, dine dine kruśaṁ gṛhītvā ca mama paścādāgacchatu|
24 For whoever chooseth to save his life, will lose it; and whoever loseth his life for my sake, he will save it.
yato yaḥ kaścit svaprāṇān rirakṣiṣati sa tān hārayiṣyati, yaḥ kaścin madarthaṁ prāṇān hārayiṣyati sa tān rakṣiṣyati|
25 For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit himself?
kaścid yadi sarvvaṁ jagat prāpnoti kintu svaprāṇān hārayati svayaṁ vinaśyati ca tarhi tasya ko lābhaḥ?
26 For whoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of man be ashamed, when be cometh in his glory, and that of his Father, and of the holy angels.
puna ryaḥ kaścin māṁ mama vākyaṁ vā lajjāspadaṁ jānāti manuṣyaputro yadā svasya pituśca pavitrāṇāṁ dūtānāñca tejobhiḥ pariveṣṭita āgamiṣyati tadā sopi taṁ lajjāspadaṁ jñāsyati|
27 And I tell you in truth, that there are some of those standing here who will not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God.
kintu yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthaṁ vadāmi, īśvarīyarājatvaṁ na dṛṣṭavā mṛtyuṁ nāsvādiṣyante, etādṛśāḥ kiyanto lokā atra sthane'pi daṇḍāyamānāḥ santi|
28 And it came to pass about eight days after this discourse, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray.
etadākhyānakathanāt paraṁ prāyeṇāṣṭasu dineṣu gateṣu sa pitaraṁ yohanaṁ yākūbañca gṛhītvā prārthayituṁ parvvatamekaṁ samāruroha|
29 And while he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was changed, and his raiment became white and glistening.
atha tasya prārthanakāle tasya mukhākṛtiranyarūpā jātā, tadīyaṁ vastramujjvalaśuklaṁ jātaṁ|
30 And lo! two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah;
aparañca mūsā eliyaścobhau tejasvinau dṛṣṭau
31 who appeared in glory, and spoke of his departure which he was about to fulfill in Jerusalem.
tau tena yirūśālampure yo mṛtyuḥ sādhiṣyate tadīyāṁ kathāṁ tena sārddhaṁ kathayitum ārebhāte|
32 But Peter and those who were with him were weighed down with sleep. But when they awoke, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.
tadā pitarādayaḥ svasya saṅgino nidrayākṛṣṭā āsan kintu jāgaritvā tasya tejastena sārddham uttiṣṭhantau janau ca dadṛśuḥ|
33 And it came to pass as they were parting from him, that Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us make three tents, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah; —not knowing what he said.
atha tayorubhayo rgamanakāle pitaro yīśuṁ babhāṣe, he guro'smākaṁ sthāne'smin sthitiḥ śubhā, tata ekā tvadarthā, ekā mūsārthā, ekā eliyārthā, iti tisraḥ kuṭyosmābhi rnirmmīyantāṁ, imāṁ kathāṁ sa na vivicya kathayāmāsa|
34 But as he was saying this, there came a cloud and overshadowed them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud.
aparañca tadvākyavadanakāle payoda eka āgatya teṣāmupari chāyāṁ cakāra, tatastanmadhye tayoḥ praveśāt te śaśaṅkire|
35 And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, “This is my chosen Son; hear him.”
tadā tasmāt payodād iyamākāśīyā vāṇī nirjagāma, mamāyaṁ priyaḥ putra etasya kathāyāṁ mano nidhatta|
36 And when the voice had come, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it secret, and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.
iti śabde jāte te yīśumekākinaṁ dadṛśuḥ kintu te tadānīṁ tasya darśanasya vācamekāmapi noktvā manaḥsu sthāpayāmāsuḥ|
37 And it came to pass that on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him.
pare'hani teṣu tasmācchailād avarūḍheṣu taṁ sākṣāt karttuṁ bahavo lokā ājagmuḥ|
38 And lo! a man from the multitude cried out, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee, look upon my son, for he is my only child;
teṣāṁ madhyād eko jana uccairuvāca, he guro ahaṁ vinayaṁ karomi mama putraṁ prati kṛpādṛṣṭiṁ karotu, mama sa evaikaḥ putraḥ|
39 and lo! a spirit seizeth him, and suddenly crieth out, and convulseth him so that he foameth, and it departeth from him hardly, taking away all his strength.
bhūtena dhṛtaḥ san saṁ prasabhaṁ cīcchabdaṁ karoti tanmukhāt pheṇā nirgacchanti ca, bhūta itthaṁ vidāryya kliṣṭvā prāyaśastaṁ na tyajati|
40 And I besought thy disciples to cast it out, and they could not.
tasmāt taṁ bhūtaṁ tyājayituṁ tava śiṣyasamīpe nyavedayaṁ kintu te na śekuḥ|
41 And Jesus answering said, O unbelieving and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? Bring thy son hither.
tadā yīśuravādīt, re āviśvāsin vipathagāmin vaṁśa katikālān yuṣmābhiḥ saha sthāsyāmyahaṁ yuṣmākam ācaraṇāni ca sahiṣye? tava putramihānaya|
42 And while he was yet coming, the demon threw him down, and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him to his father.
tatastasminnāgatamātre bhūtastaṁ bhūmau pātayitvā vidadāra; tadā yīśustamamedhyaṁ bhūtaṁ tarjayitvā bālakaṁ svasthaṁ kṛtvā tasya pitari samarpayāmāsa|
43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they were all wondering at all the things which he did, he said to his disciples,
īśvarasya mahāśaktim imāṁ vilokya sarvve camaccakruḥ; itthaṁ yīśoḥ sarvvābhiḥ kriyābhiḥ sarvvairlokairāścaryye manyamāne sati sa śiṣyān babhāṣe,
44 As for you, let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men.
katheyaṁ yuṣmākaṁ karṇeṣu praviśatu, manuṣyaputro manuṣyāṇāṁ kareṣu samarpayiṣyate|
45 But they knew not the meaning of these words, and it was hidden from them, that they might not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about these words.
kintu te tāṁ kathāṁ na bubudhire, spaṣṭatvābhāvāt tasyā abhiprāyasteṣāṁ bodhagamyo na babhūva; tasyā āśayaḥ ka ityapi te bhayāt praṣṭuṁ na śekuḥ|
46 And there arose a reasoning among them, which of them was greatest.
tadanantaraṁ teṣāṁ madhye kaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ kathāmetāṁ gṛhītvā te mitho vivādaṁ cakruḥ|
47 And Jesus knowing the reasoning of their heart, took a child and set him by his side,
tato yīśusteṣāṁ manobhiprāyaṁ viditvā bālakamekaṁ gṛhītvā svasya nikaṭe sthāpayitvā tān jagāda,
48 and said to them, Whoever receiveth this child in my name, receiveth me; and whoever receiveth me, receiveth him who sent me. For he that is least among you all, he is great.
yo jano mama nāmnāsya bālāsyātithyaṁ vidadhāti sa mamātithyaṁ vidadhāti, yaśca mamātithyaṁ vidadhāti sa mama prerakasyātithyaṁ vidadhāti, yuṣmākaṁ madhyeyaḥ svaṁ sarvvasmāt kṣudraṁ jānīte sa eva śreṣṭho bhaviṣyati|
49 And John answering said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name, and we forbade him, because he doth not follow in our company.
aparañca yohan vyājahāra he prabhe tava nāmnā bhūtān tyājayantaṁ mānuṣam ekaṁ dṛṣṭavanto vayaṁ, kintvasmākam apaścād gāmitvāt taṁ nyaṣedhām| tadānīṁ yīśuruvāca,
50 But Jesus said to him, Forbid him not; for he that is not against you is for you.
taṁ mā niṣedhata, yato yo janosmākaṁ na vipakṣaḥ sa evāsmākaṁ sapakṣo bhavati|
51 And it came to pass, when the time was near for his being received up, that he himself steadily set his face to go to Jerusalem.
anantaraṁ tasyārohaṇasamaya upasthite sa sthiracetā yirūśālamaṁ prati yātrāṁ karttuṁ niścityāgre dūtān preṣayāmāsa|
52 And he sent messengers before him; and they went and entered a city of the Samaritans, to make ready for him.
tasmāt te gatvā tasya prayojanīyadravyāṇi saṁgrahītuṁ śomiroṇīyānāṁ grāmaṁ praviviśuḥ|
53 And they did not receive him, because his face was as if he were going to Jerusalem.
kintu sa yirūśālamaṁ nagaraṁ yāti tato heto rlokāstasyātithyaṁ na cakruḥ|
54 And the disciples James and John, on seeing it, said, Lord, wilt thou have us bid fire come down from heaven, and consume them?
ataeva yākūbyohanau tasya śiṣyau tad dṛṣṭvā jagadatuḥ, he prabho eliyo yathā cakāra tathā vayamapi kiṁ gagaṇād āgantum etān bhasmīkarttuñca vahnimājñāpayāmaḥ? bhavān kimicchati?
55 But he turned and rebuked them.
kintu sa mukhaṁ parāvartya tān tarjayitvā gaditavān yuṣmākaṁ manobhāvaḥ kaḥ, iti yūyaṁ na jānītha|
56 And they went to another village.
manujasuto manujānāṁ prāṇān nāśayituṁ nāgacchat, kintu rakṣitum āgacchat| paścād itaragrāmaṁ te yayuḥ|
57 And as they were traveling on the way, one said to him, I will follow thee wherever thou goest.
tadanantaraṁ pathi gamanakāle jana ekastaṁ babhāṣe, he prabho bhavān yatra yāti bhavatā sahāhamapi tatra yāsyāmi|
58 And Jesus said to him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have lodging-places; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
tadānīṁ yīśustamuvāca, gomāyūnāṁ garttā āsate, vihāyasīyavihagānāṁ nīḍāni ca santi, kintu mānavatanayasya śiraḥ sthāpayituṁ sthānaṁ nāsti|
59 And he said to another, Follow me. But he said, Suffer me first to go and bury my father.
tataḥ paraṁ sa itarajanaṁ jagāda, tvaṁ mama paścād ehi; tataḥ sa uvāca, he prabho pūrvvaṁ pitaraṁ śmaśāne sthāpayituṁ māmādiśatu|
60 And he said to him, Let the dead bury their own dead; but go thou and carry the tidings of the kingdom of God.
tadā yīśuruvāca, mṛtā mṛtān śmaśāne sthāpayantu kintu tvaṁ gatveśvarīyarājyasya kathāṁ pracāraya|
61 And another also said, I will follow thee, Lord; but first let me bid farewell to those who are in my house.
tatonyaḥ kathayāmāsa, he prabho mayāpi bhavataḥ paścād gaṁsyate, kintu pūrvvaṁ mama niveśanasya parijanānām anumatiṁ grahītum ahamādiśyai bhavatā|
62 And Jesus said to him, No one who looketh back after putting his hand to the plough is fit for the kingdom of God.
tadānīṁ yīśustaṁ proktavān, yo jano lāṅgale karamarpayitvā paścāt paśyati sa īśvarīyarājyaṁ nārhati|
