< Luke 8 >
1 And it came to pass afterward, that he journeyed through cities and villages, preaching and publishing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God; and the twelve were with him,
aparañca yīśu rdvādaśabhiḥ śiṣyaiḥ sārddhaṁ nānānagarēṣu nānāgrāmēṣu ca gacchan iśvarīyarājatvasya susaṁvādaṁ pracārayituṁ prārēbhē|

3 and Joanna, the wife of Chuzas, Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who afforded them aid from their substance.

4 And a great multitude collecting together, and people from the cities going out to him, he spoke by a parable:
anantaraṁ nānānagarēbhyō bahavō lōkā āgatya tasya samīpē'milan, tadā sa tēbhya ēkāṁ dr̥ṣṭāntakathāṁ kathayāmāsa| ēkaḥ kr̥ṣībalō bījāni vaptuṁ bahirjagāma,
5 A sower went forth to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some seeds fell by the way-side; and they were trodden down, and the birds of the air devoured them.
tatō vapanakālē katipayāni bījāni mārgapārśvē pētuḥ, tatastāni padatalai rdalitāni pakṣibhi rbhakṣitāni ca|
6 And others fell upon rocky ground; and when they had sprung up they withered away, because they had no moisture.

7 And others fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up with them, and choked them.
katipayāni bījāni kaṇṭakivanamadhyē patitāni tataḥ kaṇṭakivanāni saṁvr̥ddhya tāni jagrasuḥ|
8 And others fell upon good ground, and sprung up, and bore fruit, a hundred-fold. While saying these things, he cried aloud, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

9 And his disciples asked him what this parable meant.
tataḥ paraṁ śiṣyāstaṁ papracchurasya dr̥ṣṭāntasya kiṁ tātparyyaṁ?
10 And he said, To you it hath been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God; but to others [[these things are spoken]] in parables; that while seeing they may not see, and while hearing they may not understand.
tataḥ sa vyājahāra, īśvarīyarājyasya guhyāni jñātuṁ yuṣmabhyamadhikārō dīyatē kintvanyē yathā dr̥ṣṭvāpi na paśyanti śrutvāpi ma budhyantē ca tadarthaṁ tēṣāṁ purastāt tāḥ sarvvāḥ kathā dr̥ṣṭāntēna kathyantē|
11 Now the meaning of the parable is this. The seed is the word of God.
dr̥ṣṭāntasyāsyābhiprāyaḥ, īśvarīyakathā bījasvarūpā|
12 Those by the way-side are they that hear; then cometh the Devil and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved.

13 Those on the rocky ground are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root; and for a while they believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
yē kathaṁ śrutvā sānandaṁ gr̥hlanti kintvabaddhamūlatvāt svalpakālamātraṁ pratītya parīkṣākālē bhraśyanti taēva pāṣāṇabhūmisvarūpāḥ|
14 And those seeds which fell among the thorns, these are they who, when they have heard, go away and are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to perfection.
yē kathāṁ śrutvā yānti viṣayacintāyāṁ dhanalōbhēna ēhikasukhē ca majjanta upayuktaphalāni na phalanti ta ēvōptabījakaṇṭakibhūsvarūpāḥ|
15 But the seeds on the good ground, these are they who in an honest and good heart, when they have heard the word, hold it fast, and bear fruit with constancy.
kintu yē śrutvā saralaiḥ śuddhaiścāntaḥkaraṇaiḥ kathāṁ gr̥hlanti dhairyyam avalambya phalānyutpādayanti ca ta ēvōttamamr̥tsvarūpāḥ|
16 And no one having lighted a lamp, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light.

17 For nothing is secret, that will not be made manifest; nor hidden, that will not be known, and come to light.
yanna prakāśayiṣyatē tādr̥g aprakāśitaṁ vastu kimapi nāsti yacca na suvyaktaṁ pracārayiṣyatē tādr̥g gr̥ptaṁ vastu kimapi nāsti|
18 Take heed therefore how ye hear; for whoever hath, to him will be given; and whoever hath not, from him will be taken even what he seemeth to have.

25 And he said to them, Where is your faith? And they were afraid, and wondered, saying one to another, Who then is this, that he commandeth even the winds and the water, and they obey him?

29 For he was about to command the unclean spirit to come out of the man; for it had possessed him for a long time, and he had been kept bound and secured with chains and fetters; and bursting the bands, he had been driven by the demon into the wilderness.
