Luke 7
1 When he had ended all his discourse in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.
Quand il eut achevé tous ces discours adressés au peuple, Jésus entra dans Capharnaüm.
2 And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear to him, was sick, and about to die.
Or un centurion avait, malade et près de mourir, un serviteur qui lui était très cher.
3 And having heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, and besought him to come and save his servant.
Ayant entendu parler de Jésus, il lui envoya quelques Anciens d'entre les Juifs, pour lui demander de venir et de guérir son serviteur.
4 And they came to Jesus, and besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldst do this for him;
Ceux-ci, ayant abordé Jésus, le prièrent avec de grandes instances: «Il mérite, lui dirent-ils, que tu lui accordes cela,
5 for he loveth our nation, and himself built the synagogue for us.
car il aime notre nation et c'est lui qui nous a bâti la synagogue.»
6 And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldst come under my roof;
Jésus était parti avec eux; comme il n'était plus qu'à une o petite distance de la maison, le centurion envoya de ses amis lui dire: «Seigneur, ne prends pas tant de peine, car je ne suis pas digne que tu entres sous mon toit,
7 on which account I did not think myself worthy to come to thee; but command with a word, and let my servant be healed.
et c'est pour cela que je ne me suis pas moi-même jugé digne d'aller à toi. Mais donne un ordre et mon serviteur sera guéri.
8 For even I am a man set under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.
Car moi (qui ne suis pourtant qu'un subordonné) j'ai sous mes ordres des soldats, et si je dis à l'un: «Va-t'en», il s'en va; à l'autre: «Viens vient; à mon, esclave: «Fais cela», il le fait.»
9 And Jesus hearing this, wondered at him; and turning round said to the multitude that followed him, I say to you, Not even in Israel have I found such faith.
Jésus fut dans l'admiration de ce langage; et se tournant vers la foule qui le suivait: «Je vous le déclare, dit-il, même en Israël, je n'ai pas trouvé une foi aussi grande.»
10 And they who were sent, returning to the house, found the servant well.
De retour à la maison, les envoyés du centurion trouvèrent le serviteur en pleine santé.
11 And it came to pass the day after, that he was going to a city called Nain; and many of his disciples were with him, and a great multitude.
Le lendemain il se dirigea vers une ville appelée Naïn; avec lui allaient un grand nombre de ses disciples et une foule considérable.
12 And as he came near the gate of the city, lo! there was carried out dead an only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a great multitude from the city was with her.
Comme il arrivait à la porte de la cité, il se trouva que l'on portait en terre un mort; c'était un fils unique dont la mère était veuve. Une grande quantité d'habitants de la ville étaient avec elle.
13 And when the Lord saw her, he was moved with compassion for her, and said to her, Weep not.
En la voyant, le Seigneur fut touché de compassions envers elle et lui dit: «Ne pleure point!»
14 And he came up, and touched the bier; and they who bore it stood still; and he said, Young man, I say to thee, Rise.
Puis il s'approcha et toucha le cercueil. Les porteurs s'arrêtèrent, et il dit: «Jeune homme, je te l'ordonne, lève-toi!»
15 And he that was dead sat up and began to speak; and he gave him to his mother.
Et le mort se dressa sur son séant et se mit à parler. Jésus le rendit à sa mère.
16 And fear seized on all, and they gave glory to God, saying, A great prophet hath risen up among us; and, God hath visited his people.
La crainte les saisit tous et ils glorifiaient Dieu: «Un grand prophète, disaient-ils, a surgi parmi nous, et Dieu a visité son peuple.»
17 And this report about him went forth in all Judaea, and in all the neighboring country.
Le bruit de ce qui s'était passé se répandit partout en Judée et dans tout le pays environnant.
18 And the disciples of John told him all these things.
Les disciples de Jean ayant rapporté tout cela à leur maître,
19 And calling to him two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, Art thou he that is to come, or are we to look for another?
celui-ci en désigna deux, et les envoya dire au Seigneur: «Es-tu celui qui doit venir, ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?»
20 And the men came to him and said, John the Baptist hath sent us to thee, saying, Art thou he that is to come, or are we to look for another?
S'étant donc présentés à Jésus, ces hommes lui dirent: «Jean-Baptiste nous a adressés à toi pour te dire: Es-tu celui qui doit venir ou devons-nous en attendre un autre?»
21 In that hour he cured many of diseases, and plagues, and evil spirits, and to many who were blind he gave sight.
Or, en cet instant même, Jésus guérissait nombre de malades, d'infirmes, de possédés; à beaucoup d'aveugles il faisait don de la vue.
22 And he answered and said to them, Go and tell John what ye have seen and heard; that the blind receive sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor good tidings are brought;
Alors il fit aux messagers celte réponse: «Allez annoncer à Jean ce que vous avez vu et entendu: des aveugles voient, des estropiés marchent, des lépreux sont guéris, des sourds entendent, des morts ressuscitent, des pauvres entendent l'Évangiles.
23 and blessed is he, whoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me.
Heureux est celui pour qui je ne serai pas une occasion de chute.»
24 And when the messengers of John had departed, he began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What have ye gone out into the wilderness to see? the reeds shaken by the wind?
Quand les messagers furent partis, Jésus se mit à parler de Jean aux multitudes: «Au désert, qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Est-ce un roseau agité par le vent?
25 But what have ye gone out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Lo! they who wear gorgeous apparel, and live luxuriously, are in kings' palaces.
Qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Est-ce un homme aux vêtements efféminés? Mais ceux qui se revêtent de riches habits et qui vivent au milieu des délices vivent dans les palais des rois.
26 But what have ye gone out to see? A prophet? Yea, I say to you, and more than a prophet.
Qu'êtes-vous donc allés voir? Est-ce un prophète? Oui, vous dis-je, et plus qu'un prophète.
27 This is he of whom it is written, “Lo! I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.”
C'est celui dont il est écrit: Voici que j'envoie mon messager pour te précéder Et préparer ton chemin devant toi.
28 I say to you, Among those born of women there is no greater prophet than John; but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.
«Je vous le déclare, parmi ceux que les femmes ont enfantés, nul n'est plus grand que Jean. Mais le plus petit dans le Royaume de Dieu est plus grand que lui.»
29 And all the people when they heard him, and the publicans, acknowledged God as righteous by being baptized with the baptism of John.
«En se faisant baptiser du baptême de Jean, tout le peuple qui l'écoutait, même les publicains ont reconnu la justice de Dieu;
30 But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the purpose of God toward themselves, not being baptized by him.
mais en ne se faisant pas baptiser par lui, les Pharisiens et les légistes ont rejeté le dessein de Dieu à leur égard.»
31 To what then shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
«A qui donc assimilerai-je les hommes de cette génération-ci? et à qui ressemblent-ils?
32 They are like children sitting in the market-place, and calling one to another, saying, We piped to you, and ye did not dance; we sung a dirge, and ye did not weep.
Ils ressemblent à des enfants assis sur la place publique qui se crient les uns aux autres: Nous avons joué de la flûte Et vous n'avez pas dansé; Nous avons entonné des chants lugubres Et vous n'avez pas pleuré.»
33 For John the Baptist hath come not eating bread, nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon.
«Et, en effet, Jean-Baptiste est venu s'abstenant de manger du pain et de boire du vin; et vous dites: «Il est possédé d'un démon.»
34 The Son of man hath come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a glutton and a wine-bibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
Le Fils de l'homme est venu mangeant et buvant comme tout le monde, et vous dites: «Voilà un amateur de bonne chère, un buveur de vin, un ami des publicains et des pécheurs.»
35 But wisdom is acknowledged by all her children.
«A la sagesse, justice est rendue par tous ses enfants.»
36 And one of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him; and he went into the Pharisee's house, and reclined at the table.
Un des Pharisiens le pria de venir manger chez lui. Jésus, étant donc entré dans la maison du Pharisien, se mit à table.
37 And lo! a woman who was in the city, a sinner, learning that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster-bottle of ointment,
Or, une femme de la ville qui vivait dans le péché, ayant appris qu'il était à table dans la maison de ce Pharisien, apporta un vase d'albâtre rempli de parfum.
38 and standing behind at his feet, weeping, began to wet his feet with tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
Elle se plaça derrière lui, en pleurant, et se tint à ses pieds, qu'elle arrosa d'abord de ses larmes et qu'elle essuya ensuite de ses cheveux, à ses pieds qu'elle baisa longtemps et qu'elle oignit de son parfum.
39 And the Pharisee who had invited him, when he saw this, said within himself, This man, if he were a prophet, would know who, and what sort of woman, this is that toucheth him; for she is a sinner.
Voyant cela, le Pharisien qui l'avait invité pensait en lui-même: «Si cet homme était prophète, il saurait qui est cette femme qui le touche; et ce qu'elle est: une pécheresse.
40 And Jesus answering said to him, Simon, I have somewhat to say to thee. And he saith, Teacher, say on.
Jésus alors s'adressant à lui: «Simon, j'ai quelque chose à te dire.» — «Parle, maître», répondit Simon.» —
41 A certain money-lender had two debtors; one owed five hundred denaries, and the other fifty.
«Un certain créancier avait deux débiteurs; le premier lui devait cinq cents deniers; et le second cinquante.
42 When they had nothing to pay, he freely remitted the debt of both. Which of them, now, will love him the most?
Ni l'un ni l'autre n'ayant de quoi le payer, il fit à chacun d'eux remise de sa dette. Lequel des deux l'aimera le plus?»
43 Simon answering said, He, I suppose, to whom he remitted the most. And he said to him, Thou hast judged rightly.
Simon fit cette réponse: «Celui, je suppose, auquel il a remis davantage.» — «Tu viens de juger en toute droiture», reprit Jésus;
44 And turning to the woman, he said to Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered thy house, no water didst thou give me for my feet; but she wet my feet with tears, and wiped them with her hair.
puis, se tournant vers la femme et parlant toujours à Simon: «Tu vois cette femme? Quand je suis entré dans ta maison tu ne m'as pas apporté d'eau pour mes pieds, mais elle, c'est avec ses larmes qu'elle les a arrosés, c'est avec ses cheveux qu'elle les a essuyés.
45 No kiss didst thou give me; but she, from the time I came in, did not cease to kiss my feet.
Tu ne m'as pas donné de baiser; mais elle, depuis l'instant où elle est entrée n'a cessé d'embrasser mes pieds.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint; but she anointed my feet with costly ointment.
Sur ma tête, tu n'as pas fait d'onction d'huile; mais elle, ce sont mes pieds qu'elle a oints de parfum.
47 Wherefore, I say to thee, her many sins have been forgiven; for she loved much; but he to whom little is forgiven loveth little.
A cause de cela, je te le déclare, ses nombreux péchés lui sont pardonnés, parce qu'elle a beaucoup aimé. Celui à qui on pardonne peu, aime peu.»
48 And he said to her, Thy sins have been forgiven.
Puis il lui dit à elle: «Tes péchés te sont pardonnés.» —
49 And those who were at table with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that even forgiveth sins?
«Qui est cet homme qui va jusqu'à pardonner des péchés?» se demandèrent entre eux les convives.
50 But he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Lui, cependant, dit à la femme: «Ta foi t'a sauvée; va en paix!»
