Luke 6
1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he was going through grain-fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of grain, and ate them, rubbing them with their hands.
acarañca parvvaṇo dvitīyadināt paraṁ prathamaviśrāmavāre śasyakṣetreṇa yīśorgamanakāle tasya śiṣyāḥ kaṇiśaṁ chittvā kareṣu marddayitvā khāditumārebhire|
2 And some of the Pharisees said, Why are ye doing that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath?
tasmāt kiyantaḥ phirūśinastānavadan viśrāmavāre yat karmma na karttavyaṁ tat kutaḥ kurutha?
3 And Jesus answering them, said, Have ye not even read what David did, when he was himself hungry, and they who were with him?
yīśuḥ pratyuvāca dāyūd tasya saṅginaśca kṣudhārttāḥ kiṁ cakruḥ sa katham īśvarasya mandiraṁ praviśya
4 how he went into the house of God, and took and ate the show-bread, and gave it also to those who were with him, which it is not lawful for any to eat but the priests alone?
ye darśanīyāḥ pūpā yājakān vinānyasya kasyāpyabhojanīyāstānānīya svayaṁ bubhaje saṅgibhyopi dadau tat kiṁ yuṣmābhiḥ kadāpi nāpāṭhi?
5 And he said to them, The Son of man is lord even of the sabbath.
paścāt sa tānavadat manujasuto viśrāmavārasyāpi prabhu rbhavati|
6 And it came to pass on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue, and taught; and there was a man there whose right hand was withered.
anantaram anyaviśrāmavāre sa bhajanagehaṁ praviśya samupadiśati| tadā tatsthāne śuṣkadakṣiṇakara ekaḥ pumān upatasthivān|
7 And the scribes and the Pharisees were watching whether he would heal on the sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him.
tasmād adhyāpakāḥ phirūśinaśca tasmin doṣamāropayituṁ sa viśrāmavāre tasya svāsthyaṁ karoti naveti pratīkṣitumārebhire|
8 But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man having the withered hand, Rise, and stand up in the midst. And he arose, and stood up.
tadā yīśusteṣāṁ cintāṁ viditvā taṁ śuṣkakaraṁ pumāṁsaṁ provāca, tvamutthāya madhyasthāne tiṣṭha|
9 And Jesus said to them, I ask you whether it is lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do evil; to save life, or to kill?
tasmāt tasmin utthitavati yīśustān vyājahāra, yuṣmān imāṁ kathāṁ pṛcchāmi, viśrāmavāre hitam ahitaṁ vā, prāṇarakṣaṇaṁ prāṇanāśanaṁ vā, eteṣāṁ kiṁ karmmakaraṇīyam?
10 And looking round on them all, he said to him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so; and his hand was restored.
paścāt caturdikṣu sarvvān vilokya taṁ mānavaṁ babhāṣe, nijakaraṁ prasāraya; tatastena tathā kṛta itarakaravat tasya hastaḥ svasthobhavat|
11 But they were filled with madness, and conferred with one another as to what they should do to Jesus.
tasmāt te pracaṇḍakopānvitā yīśuṁ kiṁ kariṣyantīti parasparaṁ pramantritāḥ|
12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God.
tataḥ paraṁ sa parvvatamāruhyeśvaramuddiśya prārthayamānaḥ kṛtsnāṁ rātriṁ yāpitavān|
13 And when it was day, he called to him his disciples; and he chose from them twelve, whom he also named apostles;
atha dine sati sa sarvvān śiṣyān āhūtavān teṣāṁ madhye
14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,
pitaranāmnā khyātaḥ śimon tasya bhrātā āndriyaśca yākūb yohan ca philip barthalamayaśca
15 and Matthew and Thomas, and James the Son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the zealot,
mathiḥ thomā ālphīyasya putro yākūb jvalantanāmnā khyātaḥ śimon
16 and Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.
ca yākūbo bhrātā yihūdāśca taṁ yaḥ parakareṣu samarpayiṣyati sa īṣkarīyotīyayihūdāścaitān dvādaśa janān manonītān kṛtvā sa jagrāha tathā prerita iti teṣāṁ nāma cakāra|
17 And he came down with them, and stood on a level place with a great multitude of his disciples, and a great crowd of the people from all Judaea and Jerusalem and the sea-coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases.
tataḥ paraṁ sa taiḥ saha parvvatādavaruhya upatyakāyāṁ tasthau tatastasya śiṣyasaṅgho yihūdādeśād yirūśālamaśca soraḥ sīdonaśca jaladhe rodhaso jananihāśca etya tasya kathāśravaṇārthaṁ rogamuktyarthañca tasya samīpe tasthuḥ|
18 And they that were harassed with unclean spirits were cured.
amedhyabhūtagrastāśca tannikaṭamāgatya svāsthyaṁ prāpuḥ|
19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him, because power went out of him and healed all.
sarvveṣāṁ svāsthyakaraṇaprabhāvasya prakāśitatvāt sarvve lokā etya taṁ spraṣṭuṁ yetire|
20 And raising his eyes toward his disciples, he said, Blessed are ye poor; for yours is the kingdom of God.
paścāt sa śiṣyān prati dṛṣṭiṁ kutvā jagāda, he daridrā yūyaṁ dhanyā yata īśvarīye rājye vo'dhikārosti|
21 Blessed are ye that hunger now; for ye will be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now; for ye will laugh.
he adhunā kṣudhitalokā yūyaṁ dhanyā yato yūyaṁ tarpsyatha; he iha rodino janā yūyaṁ dhanyā yato yūyaṁ hasiṣyatha|
22 Blessed are ye when men hate you, and when they exclude you, and revile and cast out your name as evil, on account of the Son of man.
yadā lokā manuṣyasūno rnāmaheto ryuṣmān ṛtīyiṣyante pṛthak kṛtvā nindiṣyanti, adhamāniva yuṣmān svasamīpād dūrīkariṣyanti ca tadā yūyaṁ dhanyāḥ|
23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy; for lo! your reward is great in heaven; for thus their fathers did to the prophets.
svarge yuṣmākaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ phalaṁ bhaviṣyati, etadarthaṁ tasmin dine prollasata ānandena nṛtyata ca, teṣāṁ pūrvvapuruṣāśca bhaviṣyadvādinaḥ prati tathaiva vyavāharan|
24 But woe to you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.
kintu hā hā dhanavanto yūyaṁ sukhaṁ prāpnuta| hanta paritṛptā yūyaṁ kṣudhitā bhaviṣyatha;
25 Woe to you that are full now! for ye will hunger. Woe to you that laugh now! for ye will mourn and weep.
iha hasanto yūyaṁ vata yuṣmābhiḥ śocitavyaṁ roditavyañca|
26 Woe, when all men speak well of you! for so did their fathers of the false prophets.
sarvvailākai ryuṣmākaṁ sukhyātau kṛtāyāṁ yuṣmākaṁ durgati rbhaviṣyati yuṣmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣā mṛṣābhaviṣyadvādinaḥ prati tadvat kṛtavantaḥ|
27 But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you;
he śrotāro yuṣmabhyamahaṁ kathayāmi, yūyaṁ śatruṣu prīyadhvaṁ ye ca yuṣmān dviṣanti teṣāmapi hitaṁ kuruta|
28 bless those who curse you; pray for those who are spiteful to you.
ye ca yuṣmān śapanti tebhya āśiṣaṁ datta ye ca yuṣmān avamanyante teṣāṁ maṅgalaṁ prārthayadhvaṁ|
29 To him that smiteth thee on one cheek, offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak, forbid not to take thy coat also.
yadi kaścit tava kapole capeṭāghātaṁ karoti tarhi taṁ prati kapolam anyaṁ parāvarttya sammukhīkuru punaśca yadi kaścit tava gātrīyavastraṁ harati tarhi taṁ paridheyavastram api grahītuṁ mā vāraya|
30 Give to every one that asketh of thee; and from him that taketh away thy goods, demand them not again.
yastvāṁ yācate tasmai dehi, yaśca tava sampattiṁ harati taṁ mā yācasva|
31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also in like manner to them.
parebhyaḥ svān prati yathācaraṇam apekṣadhve parān prati yūyamapi tathācarata|
32 And if ye love those who love you, what thanks do ye deserve? for sinners also love those who love them.
ye janā yuṣmāsu prīyante kevalaṁ teṣu prīyamāṇeṣu yuṣmākaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ? pāpilokā api sveṣu prīyamāṇeṣu prīyante|
33 For if ye do good to those who do good to you, what thanks do ye deserve? even sinners do the same.
yadi hitakāriṇa eva hitaṁ kurutha tarhi yuṣmākaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ? pāpilokā api tathā kurvvanti|
34 And if ye lend to those from whom ye expect to receive, what thanks do ye deserve? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much in return.
yebhya ṛṇapariśodhasya prāptipratyāśāste kevalaṁ teṣu ṛṇe samarpite yuṣmākaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ? punaḥ prāptyāśayā pāpīlokā api pāpijaneṣu ṛṇam arpayanti|
35 But love your enemies, and do good and lend, despairing of no one; and your reward will be great, and ye will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the unthankful and wicked.
ato yūyaṁ ripuṣvapi prīyadhvaṁ, parahitaṁ kuruta ca; punaḥ prāptyāśāṁ tyaktvā ṛṇamarpayata, tathā kṛte yuṣmākaṁ mahāphalaṁ bhaviṣyati, yūyañca sarvvapradhānasya santānā iti khyātiṁ prāpsyatha, yato yuṣmākaṁ pitā kṛtaghnānāṁ durvṭattānāñca hitamācarati|
36 Be merciful, as your Father is merciful.
ata eva sa yathā dayālu ryūyamapi tādṛśā dayālavo bhavata|
37 And judge not, and ye will not be judged; and condemn not, and ye will not be condemned; forgive, and ye will be forgiven;
aparañca parān doṣiṇo mā kuruta tasmād yūyaṁ doṣīkṛtā na bhaviṣyatha; adaṇḍyān mā daṇḍayata tasmād yūyamapi daṇḍaṁ na prāpsyatha; pareṣāṁ doṣān kṣamadhvaṁ tasmād yuṣmākamapi doṣāḥ kṣamiṣyante|
38 give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will men give into your bosom; for with what measure ye mete, it will be measured to you in return.
dānānidatta tasmād yūyaṁ dānāni prāpsyatha, varañca lokāḥ parimāṇapātraṁ pradalayya sañcālya proñcālya paripūryya yuṣmākaṁ kroḍeṣu samarpayiṣyanti; yūyaṁ yena parimāṇena parimātha tenaiva parimāṇena yuṣmatkṛte parimāsyate|
39 And he spoke also a parable to them: Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a ditch?
atha sa tebhyo dṛṣṭāntakathāmakathayat, andho janaḥ kimandhaṁ panthānaṁ darśayituṁ śaknoti? tasmād ubhāvapi kiṁ gartte na patiṣyataḥ?
40 A disciple is not above his teacher; but every one when fully instructed will be as his teacher.
guroḥ śiṣyo na śreṣṭhaḥ kintu śiṣye siddhe sati sa gurutulyo bhavituṁ śaknoti|
41 And why dost thou look at the mote in thy brother's eye, and not perceive the beam that is in thine own eye?
aparañca tvaṁ svacakṣuṣi nāsām adṛṣṭvā tava bhrātuścakṣuṣi yattṛṇamasti tadeva kutaḥ paśyami?
42 How canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me take out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself perceivest not the beam in thine own eye? Hypocrite! first cast the beam out of thine own eye, and then thou wilt see clearly to take out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.
svacakṣuṣi yā nāsā vidyate tām ajñātvā, bhrātastava netrāt tṛṇaṁ bahiḥ karomīti vākyaṁ bhrātaraṁ kathaṁ vaktuṁ śaknoṣi? he kapaṭin pūrvvaṁ svanayanāt nāsāṁ bahiḥ kuru tato bhrātuścakṣuṣastṛṇaṁ bahiḥ karttuṁ sudṛṣṭiṁ prāpsyasi|
43 For there is no good tree that beareth bad fruit; and again, there is no bad tree that beareth good fruit.
anyañca uttamastaruḥ kadāpi phalamanuttamaṁ na phalati, anuttamataruśca phalamuttamaṁ na phalati kāraṇādataḥ phalaistaravo jñāyante|
44 For every tree is known by its own fruit; for from thorns men do not gather figs, nor from a bramble-bush do they gather grapes.
kaṇṭakipādapāt kopi uḍumbaraphalāni na pātayati tathā śṛgālakolivṛkṣādapi kopi drākṣāphalaṁ na pātayati|
45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil; for out of the abundance of his heart his mouth speaketh.
tadvat sādhuloko'ntaḥkaraṇarūpāt subhāṇḍāgārād uttamāni dravyāṇi bahiḥ karoti, duṣṭo lokaścāntaḥkaraṇarūpāt kubhāṇḍāgārāt kutsitāni dravyāṇi nirgamayati yato'ntaḥkaraṇānāṁ pūrṇabhāvānurūpāṇi vacāṁsi mukhānnirgacchanti|
46 But why call ye me Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
aparañca mamājñānurūpaṁ nācaritvā kuto māṁ prabho prabho iti vadatha?
47 Every one that cometh to me and heareth my sayings and doeth them, I will show you whom he is like.
yaḥ kaścin mama nikaṭam āgatya mama kathā niśamya tadanurūpaṁ karmma karoti sa kasya sadṛśo bhavati tadahaṁ yuṣmān jñāpayāmi|
48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep, and laid its foundation on a rock; and when a flood arose, the stream dashed against that house, and could not shake it; because it was well built.
yo jano gabhīraṁ khanitvā pāṣāṇasthale bhittiṁ nirmmāya svagṛhaṁ racayati tena saha tasyopamā bhavati; yata āplāvijalametya tasya mūle vegena vahadapi tadgehaṁ lāḍayituṁ na śaknoti yatastasya bhittiḥ pāṣāṇopari tiṣṭhati|
49 But he that heareth and doeth not, is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation; against which the stream dashed, and it fell at once, and the ruin of that house was great.
kintu yaḥ kaścin mama kathāḥ śrutvā tadanurūpaṁ nācarati sa bhittiṁ vinā mṛdupari gṛhanirmmātrā samāno bhavati; yata āplāvijalamāgatya vegena yadā vahati tadā tadgṛhaṁ patati tasya mahat patanaṁ jāyate|
