Luke 2
1 And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be registered.
Or il arriva en ces jours-là qu’il parut un édit de César Auguste, pour qu’on fît le dénombrement des habitants de toute la terre.
2 (This registering was the first made while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
Ce premier dénombrement fut fait par Cyrinus, gouverneur de Syrie;
3 And all went to be registered, each to his own city.
Et tous allaient se faire inscrire, chacun dans sa ville.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
Joseph aussi monta de Nazareth, ville de Galilée, en Judée, dans la ville de David, qui est appelée Bethléem, parce qu’il était de la maison et de la famille de David,
5 to be registered with Mary who had been betrothed to him, who was with child.
Pour se faire inscrire avec Marie, son épouse, qui était enceinte.
6 And it came to pass, while they were there, that the days for her delivery were completed.
Or il arriva que lorsqu’ils étaient là, les jours où elle devait enfanter furent accomplis.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swathing-clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Et elle enfanta son fils premier-né, et l’ayant enveloppé de langes, elle le coucha dans la crèche, parce qu’il n’y avait point de place pour eux dans l’hôtellerie.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, and keeping watch over their flock by night.
Or en la même contrée se trouvaient des bergers qui passaient la nuit dans les champs, veillant tour à tour à la garde de leurs troupeaux.
9 And an angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were in great fear.
Et voilà qu’un ange du Seigneur se présenta devant eux, et une lumière divine les environna, et ils furent saisis d’une grande crainte.
10 And the angel said to them, Fear not; for lo! I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to the whole people;
Mais l’ange leur dit: Ne craignez point, car voici que je vous apporte la bonne nouvelle d’une grande joie pour tout le peuple;
11 for to you hath been born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, who is the Christ, the Lord.
C’est qu’il vous est né aujourd’hui, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est le Christ-Seigneur.
12 And this shall be the sign to you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swathing-clothes, [[lying]] in a manger.
Et ceci sera pour vous le signe: Vous trouverez un enfant enveloppé de langes et couché dans une crèche.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Au même instant se joignit à l’ange une multitude de la milice céleste, louant Dieu, et disant:
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will!”
Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux, et, sur la terre, paix aux hommes de bonne volonté.
15 And it came to pass, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said one to another, Let us go at once to Bethlehem, and see that which hath come to pass, which the Lord hath made known to us.
Et il arriva que lorsque les anges, remontant au ciel, les eurent quittés, les bergers se disaient les uns aux autres: Passons jusqu’à Bethléem, et voyons ce prodige qui est arrivé, et que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.
Ils vinrent donc en grande hâte, et ils trouvèrent Marie et Joseph, et l’enfant couché dans une crèche.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad what had been told them concerning this child.
Or, en le voyant, ils reconnurent la parole qui leur avait été dite sur cet enfant.
18 And all who heard wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.
Et tous ceux qui en entendirent parler admirèrent ce qui leur avait été raconté par les bergers.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
Or Marie conservait toutes ces choses, les repassant dans son cœur.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all which they had heard and seen, as had been told them.
Et les bergers s’en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu de toutes les choses qu’ils avaient entendues et vues, comme il leur avait été annoncé.
21 And when eight days were completed for him to be circumcised, his name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Cependant les huit jours pour circoncire l’enfant étant accomplis, il fut nommé Jésus, nom que l’ange lui avait donné, avant qu’il fut conçu dans le sein de sa mère.
22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
Et après que les jours de la purification de Marie furent accomplis selon la loi de Moïse, ils le portèrent à Jérusalem pour le présenter au Seigneur,
23 as it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every first-born male shall be called holy to the Lord,”
Comme il est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur: Tout mâle ouvrant un sein sera appelé consacré au Seigneur;
24 and to offer a sacrifice, according to what is directed in the law of the Lord: “A pair of turtle doves, or two young pigeons.”
Et pour offrir l’hostie selon ce qui est dit dans la loi du Seigneur, une couple de tourterelles, ou deux petits de colombes.
25 And lo! there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and he was a righteous and devout man, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon him;
Or il y avait à Jérusalem un homme appelé Siméon, et cet homme juste et craignant Dieu attendait la consolation d’Israël, et l’Esprit-Saint était en lui.
26 and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
Et il avait été averti par l’Esprit-Saint qu’il ne verrait point la mort, qu’auparavant il n’eût vu le Christ du Seigneur.
27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,
Conduit par l’Esprit, il vint dans le temple. Et comme les parents de l’enfant Jésus l’y apportaient, afin de faire pour lui selon la coutume prescrite par la loi,
28 he took him in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
Il le prit entre ses bras, bénit Dieu, et dit:
29 Lord! now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word;
Maintenant, Seigneur, laissez, selon votre parole, votre serviteur s’en aller en paix;
30 for mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Puisque mes yeux ont vu le Sauveur qui vient de vous,
31 which thou hast prepared before the face of all the peoples;
Que vous avez préparé à la face de tous les peuples;
32 a light to enlighten the gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
Pour être la lumière qui éclairera les nations, et la gloire d’Israël, votre peuple.
33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was spoken concerning him.
Et son père et sa mère étaient dans l’admiration des choses que l’on disait de lui.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be spoken against; —
Et Siméon les bénit et dit à Marie, sa mère: Celui-ci a été établi pour la ruine et la résurrection d’un grand nombre en Israël, et en signe que l’on contredira;
35 yea, a sword will pierce through thine own soul, —that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
Et un glaive traversera votre âme, afin que les pensées de beaucoup de cœurs soient révélées.
36 And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel: of the tribe of Asher; she was of great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity;
Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d’Aser; elle était fort avancée en âge, et elle avait vécu sept ans avec son mari, depuis sa virginité;
37 and she was a widow eighty-four years old, who never left the temple, worshipping with fastings and prayers night and day.
Restée veuve, et âgée alors de quatre-vingt-quatre ans, elle ne quittait point le temple, servant Dieu nuit et jour dans les jeûnes et dans la prière.
38 And she came up at this very time, and gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Elle aussi, survenant, à cette même heure, louait le Seigneur, et parlait de l’enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la rédemption d’Israël.
39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
Après qu’ils eurent tout accompli selon la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong, being filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.
Cependant l’enfant croissait et se fortifiait, plein de sagesse; et la grâce de Dieu était en lui.
41 Now his parents used to go yearly to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.
Or ses parents allaient tous les ans à Jérusalem à la fête de Pâque.
42 And when he was twelve years old, and they went up, after the custom of the feast,
Lors donc qu’il eut douze ans, ils montèrent à Jérusalem selon la coutume de cette solennité;
43 and had completed the days, on their returning, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents did not know it,
Et, quand les jours de la fête furent passés, ils s’en retournèrent; mais l’enfant Jésus demeura à Jérusalem, et ses parents ne s’en aperçurent point.
44 but, supposing him to be in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance;
Pensant qu’il était avec quelqu’un de leur compagnie, ils marchèrent durant un jour, et ils le cherchaient parmi leurs proches et leurs connaissances.
45 and not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of him.
Et ne le trouvant pas, ils revinrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
Mais il arriva que trois jours après ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et les interrogeant.
47 And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and his answers.
Et tous ceux qui l’entendaient étaient étonnés de sa sagesse et de ses réponses.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed; and his mother said to him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have been seeking thee in much distress.
En le voyant, ils furent étonnés, et sa mère lui dit: Mon fils, pourquoi avez-vous agi ainsi avec nous? Voilà que votre père et moi, fort affligés, nous vous cherchions.
49 And he said to them, Why is it that ye have been seeking me? Did ye not know that I must be about my Father's business?
Mais il leur répondit: Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ignoriez-vous qu’il faut que je sois aux choses qui regardent mon Père?
50 And they understood not what he spoke to them.
Mais eux ne comprirent point ce qu’il leur disait.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these things in her heart.
Il descendit ensuite avec eux, et vint à Nazareth; et il leur était soumis. Or sa mère conservait toutes ces choses en son cœur.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Cependant Jésus avançait en sagesse, en âge et en grâce devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
