Luke 2
1 And it came to pass in those days that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be registered.
En ce temps-là, on publia un édit de la part de César Auguste, ordonnant un recensement de toute la terre.
2 (This registering was the first made while Quirinius was governor of Syria.)
Ce recensement fut le premier et eut lieu pendant que Quirinius était gouverneur de Syrie.
3 And all went to be registered, each to his own city.
Et tous allaient se faire enregistrer, chacun dans sa ville.
4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David,
Joseph aussi monta de la Galilée en Judée, de la ville de Nazareth à la ville de David, nommée Bethléhem, — parce qu'il était de la maison et de la famille de David, —
5 to be registered with Mary who had been betrothed to him, who was with child.
pour se faire enregistrer avec Marie, son épouse, qui était enceinte.
6 And it came to pass, while they were there, that the days for her delivery were completed.
Pendant qu'ils étaient là, le jour où elle devait accoucher arriva.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swathing-clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Elle mit au monde son fils premier-né, l'emmaillota et le coucha dans une crèche, parce qu'il n'y avait point de place pour eux dans l'hôtellerie.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, and keeping watch over their flock by night.
Or, il y avait dans la même contrée des bergers, qui couchaient dans les champs et gardaient leurs troupeaux pendant les veilles de la nuit.
9 And an angel of the Lord came to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were in great fear.
Un ange du Seigneur se présenta à eux; la gloire du Seigneur resplendit autour d'eux, et ils furent saisis d'une grande crainte.
10 And the angel said to them, Fear not; for lo! I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to the whole people;
Alors l'ange leur dit: Ne craignez point! Car voici que je vous annonce une bonne nouvelle, qui sera pour tout le peuple la cause d'une grande joie:
11 for to you hath been born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, who is the Christ, the Lord.
c'est qu'aujourd'hui, dans la ville de David, un Sauveur, qui est le Christ, le Seigneur, vous est né.
12 And this shall be the sign to you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swathing-clothes, [[lying]] in a manger.
Et vous le reconnaîtrez à ce signe: vous trouverez un petit enfant emmailloté et couché dans une crèche.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Et tout à coup, il y eut avec l'ange une multitude de l'armée céleste, louant Dieu et disant:
14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men of good will!”
Gloire à Dieu au plus haut des cieux, paix sur la terre, bienveillance envers les hommes!
15 And it came to pass, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said one to another, Let us go at once to Bethlehem, and see that which hath come to pass, which the Lord hath made known to us.
Après que les anges les eurent quittés pour retourner au ciel, les bergers se dirent les uns aux autres: Allons jusqu'à Bethléhem; voyons ce qui est arrivé, ce que le Seigneur nous a fait connaître.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger.
Ils s'empressèrent donc d'y aller, et ils trouvèrent Marie, Joseph, et le petit enfant qui était couché dans la crèche.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad what had been told them concerning this child.
Après l'avoir vu, ils publièrent ce qui leur avait été dit de cet enfant.
18 And all who heard wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.
Tous ceux qui les entendirent étaient dans l'admiration de ce que les bergers leur disaient.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
Et Marie conservait toutes ces paroles et les repassait dans son coeur.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all which they had heard and seen, as had been told them.
Les bergers s'en retournèrent, glorifiant et louant Dieu de tout ce qu'ils avaient entendu et vu, conformément à ce qui leur avait été dit.
21 And when eight days were completed for him to be circumcised, his name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Quand fut arrivé le huitième jour où l'on devait circoncire l'enfant, on lui donna le nom de Jésus, nom qui lui avait été donné par l'ange avant qu'il fût conçu dans le sein de sa mère.
22 And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord,
Lorsque furent achevés les jours de leur purification selon la loi de Moïse, ils portèrent l'enfant à Jérusalem, pour le présenter au Seigneur,
23 as it is written in the law of the Lord: “Every first-born male shall be called holy to the Lord,”
— ainsi qu'il est écrit dans la loi du Seigneur: «Tout mâle premier-né sera consacré au Seigneur» —
24 and to offer a sacrifice, according to what is directed in the law of the Lord: “A pair of turtle doves, or two young pigeons.”
et pour offrir le sacrifice prescrit dans la loi du Seigneur: une paire de tourterelles ou deux pigeonneaux.
25 And lo! there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and he was a righteous and devout man, waiting for the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was upon him;
Or, il y avait à Jérusalem un homme qui s'appelait Siméon. Cet homme était juste et pieux; il attendait la consolation d'Israël, et l'Esprit saint reposait sur lui.
26 and it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.
Il avait été averti divinement par le Saint-Esprit qu'il ne verrait point la mort avant d'avoir vu l'Oint du Seigneur.
27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law,
Il vint donc au temple, poussé par l'Esprit; et comme les parents apportaient l'enfant Jésus, pour accomplir à son égard les prescriptions ordinaires de la loi,
28 he took him in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
il le prit dans ses bras, bénit Dieu et dit:
29 Lord! now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word;
Maintenant, Seigneur, tu laisses aller ton serviteur en paix, selon ta parole;
30 for mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
car mes yeux ont vu ton salut,
31 which thou hast prepared before the face of all the peoples;
que tu as préparé pour être, à la face de tous les peuples,
32 a light to enlighten the gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.
la lumière qui doit éclairer les nations et la gloire de ton peuple d'Israël.
33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was spoken concerning him.
Son père et sa mère admiraient ce qu'on disait de lui.
34 And Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be spoken against; —
Et Siméon les bénit, et dit à Marie, sa mère: Voici que cet enfant est destiné à être une cause de chute et de relèvement pour plusieurs en Israël, et un signe qui provoquera la contradiction;
35 yea, a sword will pierce through thine own soul, —that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
à toi-même, une épée te transpercera l'âme. C'est ainsi que les pensées du coeur de plusieurs seront dévoilées.
36 And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel: of the tribe of Asher; she was of great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity;
Il y avait aussi une prophétesse, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la tribu d'Asser, qui était fort avancée en âge. Après avoir vécu, depuis sa virginité, sept ans avec son mari,
37 and she was a widow eighty-four years old, who never left the temple, worshipping with fastings and prayers night and day.
elle était restée veuve. Elle était alors âgée de quatre-vingt-quatre ans, et ne sortait point du temple, servant Dieu nuit et jour dans les jeûnes et les prières.
38 And she came up at this very time, and gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.
Elle aussi, étant survenue en ce même instant, louait Dieu, et elle parlait de l'enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la délivrance de Jérusalem.
39 And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city Nazareth.
Après qu'ils eurent tout accompli selon la loi du Seigneur, ils retournèrent en Galilée, à Nazareth, leur ville.
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong, being filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.
Le petit enfant grandissait et se fortifiait; il était rempli de sagesse, et la grâce de Dieu était sur lui.
41 Now his parents used to go yearly to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover.
Les parents de Jésus allaient tous les ans à Jérusalem, à la fête de Pâque.
42 And when he was twelve years old, and they went up, after the custom of the feast,
Quand il eut atteint l'âge de douze ans, ils montèrent à Jérusalem, selon la coutume de la fête.
43 and had completed the days, on their returning, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents did not know it,
Les jours de la fête étant passés, comme ils s'en retournaient, l'enfant Jésus demeura à Jérusalem, et ses parents ne s'en aperçurent point.
44 but, supposing him to be in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance;
Pensant qu'il était avec leurs compagnons de route, ils marchèrent toute une journée, et ils le cherchaient parmi leurs parents et ceux de leur connaissance;
45 and not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem in search of him.
mais, ne l'ayant pas trouvé, ils retournèrent à Jérusalem pour le chercher.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions.
Au bout de trois jours, ils le trouvèrent dans le temple, assis au milieu des docteurs, les écoutant et leur posant des questions;
47 And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and his answers.
et tous ceux qui l'entendaient étaient ravis de son intelligence et de ses réponses.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed; and his mother said to him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have been seeking thee in much distress.
En le voyant, ils furent étonnés; et sa mère lui dit: Mon enfant, pourquoi as-tu agi de la sorte avec nous? Voici que ton père et moi nous te cherchions, étant fort en peine.
49 And he said to them, Why is it that ye have been seeking me? Did ye not know that I must be about my Father's business?
Et il leur dit: Pourquoi me cherchiez-vous? Ne saviez-vous pas qu'il me faut être occupé des affaires de mon Père?
50 And they understood not what he spoke to them.
Mais eux ne comprirent pas ce qu'il leur disait.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these things in her heart.
Il s'en alla ensuite avec eux et vint à Nazareth; et il leur était soumis. Sa mère conservait toutes ces paroles dans son coeur.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
Jésus croissait en sagesse, en stature et en grâce, devant Dieu et devant les hommes.
