Jonah 1

1 Now the word of Jehovah came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

Y la palabra del Señor vino a Jonás, hijo de Amitai, diciendo:

2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.

Levántate! ve a Nínive, esa gran ciudad, y deja que tu voz llegue a ella; porque su maldad ha surgido delante de mí.

3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah; and he went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish, and paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of Jehovah.

Y Jonás se levantó para huir a Tarsis, lejos del Señor; y bajó a Jope, y vio allí un barco que iba a Tarsis; así que les dio el precio del viaje y bajó para ir con ellos a Tarsis, lejos del Señor.

4 But Jehovah sent forth a great wind upon the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken in pieces.

Y el Señor envió un gran viento hacia el mar y hubo una tormenta violenta en el mar, por lo que el barco parecía estar en peligro de hacerse pedazos.

5 Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man to his god. And they cast forth the things that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah had gone down to the lower part of the ship, and he lay and was fast asleep.

Entonces los marineros estaban llenos de miedo, cada hombre llorando a su dios; y los bienes en el barco fueron arrojados al mar para reducir el peso. Pero Jona había bajado a la parte más interior del barco donde estaba tendido en un sueño profundo.

6 And the shipmaster came to him, and said to him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? Arise, call upon thy God! Perhaps God will think upon us, that we perish not.

Y el capitán del barco se le acercó y le dijo: ¿Qué haces durmiendo? ¡Levántate! Di una oración a tu Dios, si por casualidad Dios tendrá compasión de nosotros, para que no lleguemos a la destrucción.

7 And they said one to another, come, and let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil is upon us! And they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Y se dijeron el uno al otro: Ven, pongamos esto a la decisión del azar y veamos por quién nos ha venido este mal. Entonces lo hicieron, y Jonás fue visto como el hombre.

8 Then said they to him, Tell us, we pray thee, on whose account this evil is upon us. What is thy business? And whence comest thou? What is thy country? And of what people art thou?

Entonces le dijeron: Ahora dinos cuál es tu trabajo y de dónde vienes. ¿Cuál es tu país y quién es tu gente?

9 And he said to them, I am a Hebrew; and I fear Jehovah, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

Y él les dijo: Soy hebreo, adorador del Señor, el Dios del cielo, que hizo el mar y la tierra seca.

10 Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said to him, Wherefore hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of Jehovah, because he had told them.

Y los hombres estaban muy temerosos, y le dijeron: ¿Qué es esto que has hecho? Porque los hombres tenían conocimiento de su huida del Señor porque él no se la había ocultado.

11 Then said they to him, What shall we do to thee, that the sea may be calm to us? For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

Y le dijeron: ¿Qué te vamos a hacer para que el mar se calme? Porque el mar se estaba volviendo cada vez más tempestuoso.

12 And he said to them, Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; and the sea shall be calm to you. For I know that because of me this great tempest is upon you.

Y él les dijo: Tómame y échame en el mar, y el mar se calmará; porque estoy seguro de que por mí esta gran tormenta ha venido sobre ustedes.

13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring the ship to the land; but they could not; for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

Y los hombres estaban trabajando duro para regresar a la tierra, pero no pudieron hacerlo; porque el mar se hizo cada vez más duro contra ellos.

14 And they cried to Jehovah, and said, We beseech thee, O Jehovah, we beseech thee, let us not perish for the life of this man, and lay not upon us innocent blood! For thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it pleased thee.

Entonces, clamando al Señor, dijeron: Escucha, oh Señor, nuestra oración, y no permitas que la destrucción nos alcance por la vida de este hombre; no nos pongas sangre inocente sobre nosotros; porque tú, Señor, has hecho lo que te pareció bien.

15 And they took up Jonah, and cast him forth into the sea; and the sea ceased from its raging.

Entonces tomaron a Jonás y lo echaron al mar; y el mar volvió a su calma.

16 Then the men feared Jehovah exceedingly, and offered sacrifice to Jehovah, and made vows.

Entonces fue grande la reverencia de los hombres al Señor; e hicieron una ofrenda al Señor y le hicieron juramentos.

17 Now Jehovah had appointed a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.

Y el Señor preparó un gran pez para que se tragara a Jonás; y Jonás estuvo dentro del pez durante tres días y tres noches.
