John 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Au commencement était le Verbe, et le Verbe était en Dieu, et le Verbe était Dieu.
2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Il était au commencement en Dieu.
3 All things were made through him; and without him was nothing made that hath been made.
Tout par lui a été fait, et sans lui n’a été fait rien de ce qui existe.
4 In him is life; and the life was the light of men.
En lui était la vie, et la vie était la lumière des hommes,
5 And the light hath been shining in the darkness; and the darkness received it not.
Et la lumière luit dans les ténèbres, et les ténèbres ne l’ont point reçue.
6 There was a man, sent from God, whose name was John.
Il y eut un homme, envoyé de Dieu; son nom était Jean.
7 He came as a witness, to bear witness of the light, that through him all might believe.
Celui-ci vint en témoignage, pour rendre témoignage à la lumière, afin que tous crussent par lui:
8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness of the light.
non que celui-ci fût la lumière, mais il avait à rendre témoignage à la lumière.
9 The true light, which enlighteneth every man, was coming into the world.
La lumière, la vraie, celle qui éclaire tout homme, venait dans le monde.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, and the world knew him not.
Il (le Verbe) était dans le monde, et le monde par lui a été fait, et le monde ne l’a pas connu.
11 He came to his own, and his own received him not.
Il vint chez lui, et les siens ne l’ont pas reçu.
12 But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become children of God, —to those who believed in his name;
Mais quant à tous ceux qui l’ont reçu, Il leur a donné le pouvoir de devenir enfants de Dieu, à ceux qui croient en son nom,
13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Qui non du sang, ni de la volonté de la chair, ni de la volonté de l’homme, mais de Dieu sont nés.
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; and we beheld his glory, a glory as of an only begotten of a father.
Et le Verbe s’est fait chair, et il a habité parmi nous, (et nous avons vu sa gloire, gloire comme celle qu’un fils unique tient de son Père) tout plein de grâce et de vérité.
15 John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me hath gone before me; for he was before me.
Jean lui rend témoignage, et s’écrie en ces termes: « Voici celui dont je disais: Celui qui vient après moi, est passé devant moi, parce qu’il était avant moi. »
16 For out of his fullness have we all received, and grace upon grace.
Et c’est de sa plénitude, que nous avons tous reçu, et grâce sur grâce;
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
parce que la loi a été donnée par Moïse, la grâce et la vérité sont venues par Jésus-Christ.
18 No one hath ever seen God; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath made him known.
Dieu, personne ne le vit jamais: le Fils unique, qui est dans le sein du Père, c’est lui qui l’a fait connaître.
19 And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou?
Et voici le témoignage que rendit Jean, lorsque les Juifs envoyèrent de Jérusalem des prêtres et des lévites pour lui demander: « Qui êtes-vous? »
20 And he declared, and did not deny; and he declared, I am not the Christ.
Il déclara, et ne le nia point; il déclara: « Je ne suis point le Christ. »
21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No.
Et ils lui demandèrent: « Quoi donc! Êtes-vous Élie? » Il dit: « Je ne le suis point — Êtes-vous le prophète? » Il répondit: « Non. —
22 They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us; what sayest thou of thyself?
Qui êtes-vous donc, lui dirent-ils, afin que nous donnions une réponse à ceux qui nous ont envoyés. Que dites-vous de vous-même? »
23 He said, I am “a voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord,” as said Isaiah the prophet.
Il répondit: « Je suis la voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Aplanissez le chemin du Seigneur, comme l’a dit le prophète Isaïe. »
24 And they were sent from the Pharisees;
Or ceux qu’on lui avait envoyés étaient des Pharisiens.
25 and they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?
Et ils l’interrogèrent, et lui dirent: « Pourquoi donc baptisez-vous, si vous n’êtes ni le Christ, ni Élie, ni le Prophète? »
26 John answered them, saying, I baptize in water. There standeth one among you whom ye know not,
Jean leur répondit: « Moi je baptise dans l’eau; mais au milieu de vous il y a quelqu’un que vous ne connaissez pas,
27 he who cometh after me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose.
c’est celui qui vient après moi; je ne suis pas digne de délier la courroie de sa chaussure. »
28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
Cela se passait à Béthanie, au delà du Jourdain, où Jean baptisait.
29 The next day he seeth Jesus coming to him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world!
Le lendemain, Jean vit Jésus qui venait vers lui, et il dit: « Voici l’agneau de Dieu, voici celui qui ôte le péché du monde.
30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man, who hath gone before me; for he was before me.
C’est de lui que j’ai dit: un homme vient après moi, qui est passé devant moi, parce qu’il était avant moi.
31 And I knew him not; but that he might be made manifest to Israel, therefore I came baptizing in water.
Et moi, je ne le connaissais pas, mais c’est afin qu’il fût manifesté à Israël, que je suis venu baptiser dans l’eau. »
32 And John bore witness, saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it abode upon him.
Et Jean rendit témoignage en disant: « J’ai vu l’Esprit descendre du ciel comme une colombe, et il s’est reposé sur lui.
33 And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize in water, the same said to me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, he it is that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit.
Et moi, je ne le connaissais pas; mais celui qui m’a envoyé baptiser dans l’eau m’a dit: Celui sur qui tu verras l’Esprit descendre et se reposer, c’est lui qui baptise dans l’Esprit-Saint.
34 And I have seen and have borne witness, that this is the Son of God.
Et moi j’ai vu et j’ai rendu témoignage que celui-là est le Fils de Dieu. »
35 On the morrow John was again standing, and two of his disciples;
Le lendemain, Jean se trouvait encore là, avec deux de ses disciples.
36 and looking upon Jesus as he was walking, he saith, Behold, the Lamb of God!
Et ayant regardé Jésus qui passait, il dit: « Voici l’Agneau de Dieu. »
37 The two disciples heard him speaking, and they followed Jesus.
Les deux disciples l’entendirent parler, et ils suivirent Jésus.
38 Jesus turning and seeing them following, saith to them, What seek ye? And they said to him, Rabbi, (that is to say, when interpreted, Teacher, ) where dost thou dwell?
Jésus s’étant retourné, et voyant qu’ils le suivaient, leur dit: « Que cherchez-vous? » Ils lui répondirent: « Rabbi (ce qui signifie Maître), où demeurez-vous? »
39 He saith to them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and saw where he dwelt; and they abode with him that day. It was about the tenth hour.
Il leur dit: « Venez et vous verrez. » Ils allèrent, et virent où il demeurait, et ils restèrent auprès de lui ce jour-là. Or, c’était environ la dixième heure.
40 One of the two who heard what John said, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
Or, André, le frère de Simon-Pierre, était l’un des deux qui avaient entendu la parole de Jean, et qui avaient suivi Jésus.
41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith to him, We have found the Messiah; (which is, when interpreted, the Christ.)
Il rencontra d’abord son frère Simon, et lui dit: « Nous avons trouvé le Messie (ce qui se traduit Christ). »
42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looking upon him said, Thou art Simon, the son of John; thou shalt be called Cephas; (which signifieth Peter, that is, Rock.)
Et il l’amena à Jésus. Jésus, l’ayant regardé dit: « Toi, tu es Simon, fils de Jean; tu seras appelé Céphas (ce qui se traduit Pierre). »
43 On the morrow he determined to go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip. And Jesus saith to him, Follow me.
Le jour suivant, Jésus résolut d’aller en Galilée. Et il rencontra Philippe. Et Jésus lui dit: « Suis-moi. »
44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.
Philippe était de Bethsaïde, la ville d’André et de Pierre.
45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith to him, We have found him of whom Moses in the Law, and the Prophets wrote, Jesus, the son of Joseph, who is of Nazareth.
Philippe rencontra Nathanaël et lui dit: « Nous avons trouvé celui dont Moïse a écrit dans la Loi, ainsi que les Prophètes: c’est Jésus, fils de Joseph de Nazareth. »
46 And Nathanael said to him, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith to him, Come and see.
Nathanaël lui répondit: « Peut-il sortir de Nazareth quelque chose de bon? » Philippe lui dit: « Viens et vois. »
47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile.
Jésus vit venir vers lui Nathanaël, et dit en parlant de lui: « Voici vraiment un Israélite, en qui il n’y a nul artifice. »
48 Nathanael saith to him, Whence dost thou know me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee.
Nathanaël lui dit: « D’où me connaissez-vous? » Jésus repartit et lui dit: « Avant que Philippe t’appelât, lorsque tu étais sous le figuier, je t’ai vu. »
49 Nathanael answered him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God, thou art the king of Israel.
Nathanaël lui répondit: « Rabbi, vous êtes le Fils de Dieu, vous êtes le Roi d’Israël. »
50 Jesus answered and said to him, Because I said to thee, I saw thee under the fig-tree, dost thou believe? Thou shalt see greater things than these.
Jésus lui repartit: « Parce que je t’ai dit: Je t’ai vu sous le figuier, tu crois! Tu verras de plus grandes choses que celle-là. »
51 And he saith to him, Truly, truly do I say to you, Ye will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
Et il ajouta: « En vérité, en vérité, je vous le dis, vous verrez désormais le ciel ouvert, et les anges de Dieu montant et descendant sur le Fils de l’homme. »
