1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
tataH paraM yihUdIyalOkAstaM hantuM samaihanta tasmAd yIzu ryihUdApradEzE paryyaTituM nEcchan gAlIl pradEzE paryyaTituM prArabhata|
2 Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.
kintu tasmin samayE yihUdIyAnAM dUSyavAsanAmOtsava upasthitE
3 His brothers therefore said to him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou art doing.
tasya bhrAtarastam avadan yAni karmmANi tvayA kriyantE tAni yathA tava ziSyAH pazyanti tadarthaM tvamitaH sthAnAd yihUdIyadEzaM vraja|
4 For no one doeth anything in secret, and yet himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.
yaH kazcit svayaM pracikAziSati sa kadApi guptaM karmma na karOti yadIdRzaM karmma karOSi tarhi jagati nijaM paricAyaya|
5 For even his brothers did not believe in him.
yatastasya bhrAtarOpi taM na vizvasanti|
6 Jesus saith to them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.
tadA yIzustAn avOcat mama samaya idAnIM nOpatiSThati kintu yuSmAkaM samayaH satatam upatiSThati|
7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
jagatO lOkA yuSmAn RtIyituM na zakruvanti kintu mAmEva RtIyantE yatastESAM karmANi duSTAni tatra sAkSyamidam ahaM dadAmi|
8 Go ye up to the feast; I go not up to this feast; for my time is not yet fully come.
ataEva yUyam utsavE'smin yAta nAham idAnIm asminnutsavE yAmi yatO mama samaya idAnIM na sampUrNaH|
9 Having said these things, he remained in Galilee.
iti vAkyam ukttvA sa gAlIli sthitavAn
10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not openly, but as it were in secret.
kintu tasya bhrAtRSu tatra prasthitESu satsu sO'prakaTa utsavam agacchat|
11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is that man?
anantaram utsavam upasthitA yihUdIyAstaM mRgayitvApRcchan sa kutra?
12 And there was much debating among the multitude concerning him. Some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the multitude.
tatO lOkAnAM madhyE tasmin nAnAvidhA vivAdA bhavitum ArabdhavantaH| kEcid avOcan sa uttamaH puruSaH kEcid avOcan na tathA varaM lOkAnAM bhramaM janayati|
13 No one, however, spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
kintu yihUdIyAnAM bhayAt kOpi tasya pakSE spaSTaM nAkathayat|
14 But when it was now the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
tataH param utsavasya madhyasamayE yIzu rmandiraM gatvA samupadizati sma|
15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
tatO yihUdIyA lOkA AzcaryyaM jnjAtvAkathayan ESA mAnuSO nAdhItyA katham EtAdRzO vidvAnabhUt?
16 Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.
tadA yIzuH pratyavOcad upadEzOyaM na mama kintu yO mAM prESitavAn tasya|
17 If any one is desirous to do his will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God, or whether I speak from myself.
yO janO nidEzaM tasya grahISyati mamOpadEzO mattO bhavati kim IzvarAd bhavati sa ganastajjnjAtuM zakSyati|
18 He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and in him is no unrighteousness.
yO janaH svataH kathayati sa svIyaM gauravam IhatE kintu yaH prErayitu rgauravam IhatE sa satyavAdI tasmin kOpyadharmmO nAsti|
19 Hath not Moses given you the Law? and none of you keepeth the Law! Why do ye seek to kill me?
mUsA yuSmabhyaM vyavasthAgranthaM kiM nAdadAt? kintu yuSmAkaM kOpi tAM vyavasthAM na samAcarati| mAM hantuM kutO yatadhvE?
20 The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon! Who seeketh to kill thee?
tadA lOkA avadan tvaM bhUtagrastastvAM hantuM kO yatatE?
21 Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one good work, and ye are all wondering.
tatO yIzuravOcad EkaM karmma mayAkAri tasmAd yUyaM sarvva mahAzcaryyaM manyadhvE|
22 Moses hath given you circumcision, (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers; ) and ye on the sabbath circumcise a man.
mUsA yuSmabhyaM tvakchEdavidhiM pradadau sa mUsAtO na jAtaH kintu pitRpuruSEbhyO jAtaH tEna vizrAmavArE'pi mAnuSANAM tvakchEdaM kurutha|
23 If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye angry at me, because I have restored soundness to the whole body of a man on the sabbath?
ataEva vizrAmavArE manuSyANAM tvakchEdE kRtE yadi mUsAvyavasthAmagganaM na bhavati tarhi mayA vizrAmavArE mAnuSaH sampUrNarUpENa svasthO'kAri tatkAraNAd yUyaM kiM mahyaM kupyatha?
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
sapakSapAtaM vicAramakRtvA nyAyyaM vicAraM kuruta|
25 Then some of the men of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
tadA yirUzAlam nivAsinaH katipayajanA akathayan imE yaM hantuM cESTantE sa EvAyaM kiM na?
26 and see! he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers discovered certainly that this man is the Christ?
kintu pazyata nirbhayaH san kathAM kathayati tathApi kimapi a vadantyEtE ayamEvAbhiSikttO bhavatIti nizcitaM kimadhipatayO jAnanti?
27 Still, as to this man, we know whence he is; but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.
manujOyaM kasmAdAgamad iti vayaM jAnOmaH kintvabhiSiktta AgatE sa kasmAdAgatavAn iti kOpi jnjAtuM na zakSyati|
28 Jesus therefore cried aloud, teaching in the temple and saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but there is in truth one who sent me, whom ye know not.
tadA yIzu rmadhyEmandiram upadizan uccaiHkAram ukttavAn yUyaM kiM mAM jAnItha? kasmAccAgatOsmi tadapi kiM jAnItha? nAhaM svata AgatOsmi kintu yaH satyavAdI saEva mAM prESitavAn yUyaM taM na jAnItha|
29 I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me.
tamahaM jAnE tEnAhaM prErita agatOsmi|
30 Therefore they sought to take him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
tasmAd yihUdIyAstaM dharttum udyatAstathApi kOpi tasya gAtrE hastaM nArpayad yatO hEtOstadA tasya samayO nOpatiSThati|
31 But of the multitude many believed in him, and said, When the Christ cometh, will he do more signs than these which this man doeth?
kintu bahavO lOkAstasmin vizvasya kathitavAntO'bhiSikttapuruSa Agatya mAnuSasyAsya kriyAbhyaH kim adhikA AzcaryyAH kriyAH kariSyati?
32 The Pharisees heard the multitude thus debating concerning him; and the chief priest and the Pharisees sent officers to seize him.
tataH paraM lOkAstasmin itthaM vivadantE phirUzinaH pradhAnayAjakAnjcEti zrutavantastaM dhRtvA nEtuM padAtigaNaM prESayAmAsuH|
33 Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and then I go to him that sent me.
tatO yIzuravadad aham alpadinAni yuSmAbhiH sArddhaM sthitvA matprErayituH samIpaM yAsyAmi|
34 Ye will seek me and not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come.
mAM mRgayiSyadhvE kintUddEzaM na lapsyadhvE ratra sthAsyAmi tatra yUyaM gantuM na zakSyatha|
35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go, that we shall not find him? Will he go to the dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
tadA yihUdIyAH parasparaM vakttumArEbhirE asyOddEzaM na prApsyAma EtAdRzaM kiM sthAnaM yAsyati? bhinnadEzE vikIrNAnAM yihUdIyAnAM sannidhim ESa gatvA tAn upadEkSyati kiM?
36 What meaneth this which he said, Ye will seek me, and not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?
nO cEt mAM gavESayiSyatha kintUddEzaM na prApsyatha ESa kOdRzaM vAkyamidaM vadati?
37 On the last day, which is the great day, of the feast, Jesus stood and cried aloud, saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me, and drink.
anantaram utsavasya caramE'hani arthAt pradhAnadinE yIzuruttiSThan uccaiHkAram Ahvayan uditavAn yadi kazcit tRSArttO bhavati tarhi mamAntikam Agatya pivatu|
38 He that believeth in me, from within him, as the Scripture hath said, will flow rivers of living water.
yaH kazcinmayi vizvasiti dharmmagranthasya vacanAnusArENa tasyAbhyantaratO'mRtatOyasya srOtAMsi nirgamiSyanti|
39 But this he said of the Spirit, which those that believed in him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
yE tasmin vizvasanti ta AtmAnaM prApsyantItyarthE sa idaM vAkyaM vyAhRtavAn EtatkAlaM yAvad yIzu rvibhavaM na prAptastasmAt pavitra AtmA nAdIyata|
40 Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is in truth the prophet. Others said, This is the Christ.
EtAM vANIM zrutvA bahavO lOkA avadan ayamEva nizcitaM sa bhaviSyadvAdI|
41 Others said, Doth the Christ then come from Galilee?
kEcid akathayan ESaEva sObhiSikttaH kintu kEcid avadan sObhiSikttaH kiM gAlIl pradEzE janiSyatE?
42 Hath not the Scripture said, that the Christ cometh from the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?
sObhiSikttO dAyUdO vaMzE dAyUdO janmasthAnE baitlEhami pattanE janiSyatE dharmmagranthE kimitthaM likhitaM nAsti?
43 So there was a division among the multitude because of him.
itthaM tasmin lOkAnAM bhinnavAkyatA jAtA|
44 And some of them wished to seize him; but no one laid hands on him.
katipayalOkAstaM dharttum aicchan tathApi tadvapuSi kOpi hastaM nArpayat|
45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why did ye not bring him?
anantaraM pAdAtigaNE pradhAnayAjakAnAM phirUzinAnjca samIpamAgatavati tE tAn apRcchan kutO hEtOstaM nAnayata?
46 The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man.
tadA padAtayaH pratyavadan sa mAnava iva kOpi kadApi nOpAdizat|
47 The Pharisees answered them, Have ye also been deceived?
tataH phirUzinaH prAvOcan yUyamapi kimabhrAmiSTa?
48 Hath any one of the rulers believed in him? or of the Pharisees?
adhipatInAM phirUzinAnjca kOpi kiM tasmin vyazvasIt?
49 but this multitude that know not the Law are accursed.
yE zAstraM na jAnanti ta imE'dhamalOkAEva zApagrastAH|
50 Nicodemus saith to them, being one of them,
tadA nikadImanAmA tESAmEkO yaH kSaNadAyAM yIzOH sannidhim agAt sa ukttavAn
51 Doth our law judge a man, unless it first hear from him, and know what he doeth?
tasya vAkyE na zrutE karmmaNi ca na viditE 'smAkaM vyavasthA kiM kanjcana manujaM dOSIkarOti?
52 They answered and said to him, Art thou too from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet ariseth from Galilee.
tatastE vyAharan tvamapi kiM gAlIlIyalOkaH? vivicya pazya galIli kOpi bhaviSyadvAdI nOtpadyatE|
