John 7
1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
Sen jälkeen Jeesus meni Galileaan, jossa hän kulki kylästä kylään. Hän pysytteli poissa Juudeasta, sillä juutalaisten johtomiehet punoivat siellä juonia hänen surmaamisekseen.
2 Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.
Yksi juutalaisten suurista juhlista, lehtimajanjuhla, oli tulossa,
3 His brothers therefore said to him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou art doing.
ja Jeesuksen veljet kehottelivat häntä lähtemään Juudeaan juhlille: »Mene vain sinne, niin useammat ihmiset saavat nähdä ihmeitäsi.
4 For no one doeth anything in secret, and yet himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.
Eihän sinusta koskaan tule kuuluisaa, kun tällä tavalla piileksit. Jos kerran olet niin erinomainen, niin näytä se maailmalle.»
5 For even his brothers did not believe in him.
Jeesuksen veljetkään eivät uskoneet häneen.
6 Jesus saith to them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.
Jeesus vastasi: »Jumala ei ole tarkoittanut, että menisin sinne nyt.
7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
Te voitte mennä milloin tahansa – eihän maailma teitä vihaa. Mutta minua se vihaa, koska minä osoitan sille sen syntisyyden.
8 Go ye up to the feast; I go not up to this feast; for my time is not yet fully come.
Menkää te vain! Minä tulen myöhemmin, kun oikea hetki koittaa.»
9 Having said these things, he remained in Galilee.
Ja Jeesus jäi vielä Galileaan.
10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not openly, but as it were in secret.
Sen jälkeen kun Jeesuksen veljet jo olivat lähteneet juhlille, hänkin meni sinne kaikessa hiljaisuudessa.
11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is that man?
Juutalaisten johtomiehet etsivät häntä juhlaväen joukosta ja kyselivät, oliko kukaan nähnyt häntä.
12 And there was much debating among the multitude concerning him. Some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the multitude.
Hänestä kyllä kohistiin. »Ihmeellinen mies», sanoivat toiset. »Huijari hän on!» sanoivat toiset.
13 No one, however, spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
Julkisesti ei kukaan uskaltanut häntä puolustaa peläten johtavien juutalaisten rangaistusta.
14 But when it was now the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
Juhlat olivat puolivälissä, kun Jeesus meni temppeliin ja ryhtyi opettamaan kansaa.
15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
Juutalaisten johtomiehet hämmästyivät kuullessaan, mitä hän puhui. »Kuinka hänellä voi olla näin paljon tietoa Raamatusta, kun hän ei ole käynyt meidän koulujamme?» he ihmettelivät.
16 Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.
Jeesus sanoi siihen: »Minä en esitä omia ajatuksiani, vaan Jumalan, joka minut on lähettänyt.
17 If any one is desirous to do his will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God, or whether I speak from myself.
Jos joku teistä todella päättää tehdä, niin kuin Jumala tahtoo, hän saa aivan varmasti tietää, opetanko minä Jumalan totuutta vai jotain omaani.
18 He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and in him is no unrighteousness.
Joka esittää omia ajatuksiaan, toivoo saavansa niistä kiitosta, mutta joka tahtoo tuottaa kunniaa lähettäjälleen, on luotettava ja rehellinen.
19 Hath not Moses given you the Law? and none of you keepeth the Law! Why do ye seek to kill me?
Kukaan teistä ei noudata Mooseksen lakia. Miksi sitten syytätte minua sen rikkomisesta? Miksi haluatte tappaa minut sen takia?»
20 The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon! Who seeketh to kill thee?
Kansanjoukko vastasi: »Olet järjiltäsi! Kuka sinua on yrittänyt tappaa?»
21 Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one good work, and ye are all wondering.
Jeesus sanoi: »Tein työtä sapattina, kun paransin miehen, ja te olitte ihmeissänne.
22 Moses hath given you circumcision, (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers; ) and ye on the sabbath circumcise a man.
Tekin teette työtä sapattina pyrkiessänne noudattamaan Mooseksen ympärileikkausmääräystä. Ja huomatkaa, että tuo määräys on vanhempi kuin Mooseksen laki.
23 If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye angry at me, because I have restored soundness to the whole body of a man on the sabbath?
Tekin ympärileikkaatte lapsen sapattina, jos se sattuu olemaan oikea aika. Miksi minut sitten tuomittaisiin siitä, että teen ihmisen kokonaan terveeksi sapattina?
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Ajatelkaapa asiaa, niin näette, että olen oikeassa.»
25 Then some of the men of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
Jotkut jerusalemilaiset sanoivat keskenään: »Eikö tämä ole juuri se mies, joka halutaan tappaa?
26 and see! he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers discovered certainly that this man is the Christ?
Nyt hän puhuu täällä julkisesti, eikä kukaan tee mitään. Olisivatko johtajamme kuitenkin saaneet selville, että hän todella on Messias? Mutta miten tämä mies voisi olla Messias?
27 Still, as to this man, we know whence he is; but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.
Mehän tiedämme missä hän on syntynyt! Mutta kun Messias tulee, hän vain ilmestyy jostakin, eikä kukaan tiedä mistä.»
28 Jesus therefore cried aloud, teaching in the temple and saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but there is in truth one who sent me, whom ye know not.
Sen vuoksi Jeesus sanoi kovalla äänellä puhuessaan temppelissä: »Te tiedätte kyllä, missä minä olen syntynyt ja kasvanut. Mutta häntä, joka minut on lähettänyt, te ette tunne – ja hän on totuus.
29 I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me.
Minä tunnen hänet, koska olen ollut hänen luonaan. Hän minut lähettikin teidän luoksenne.»
30 Therefore they sought to take him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Silloin juutalaisten johtomiehet halusivat pidättää Jeesuksen, mutta kukaan ei kuitenkaan koskenut häneen, sillä Jumalan säätämä hetki ei ollut vielä tullut.
31 But of the multitude many believed in him, and said, When the Christ cometh, will he do more signs than these which this man doeth?
Monet ihmiset uskoivat häneen. »Minkä sellaisen ihmeen te odotatte Messiaan tekevän, jota tämä mies ei jo olisi tehnyt?» he sanoivat.
32 The Pharisees heard the multitude thus debating concerning him; and the chief priest and the Pharisees sent officers to seize him.
Kun fariseukset kuulivat ihmisten puhuvan tällaista, he ja ylipapit lähettivät viranomaiset pidättämään Jeesuksen.
33 Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and then I go to him that sent me.
Mutta Jeesus jatkoi puhettaan: »Minun on määrä viipyä täällä vielä vähän aikaa. Sitten palaan lähettäjäni luo.
34 Ye will seek me and not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come.
Te etsitte minua, mutta ette löydä. Ettekä te voi tulla sinne missä minä olen.»
35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go, that we shall not find him? Will he go to the dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
Juutalaisten uskonnolliset johtajat hämmästyivät perin juurin kuullessaan tämän väitteen. »Minne hän oikein aikoo mennä?» he kyselivät. »Ehkäpä hän matkustaa lähetyssaarnaajaksi muissa maissa asuvien juutalaisten tai jopa pakanoiden luo.
36 What meaneth this which he said, Ye will seek me, and not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?
Mitä hän sillä tarkoittaa, että me etsimme häntä, mutta emme pysty löytämään, ja sillä, ettemme voi mennä sinne missä hän on?»
37 On the last day, which is the great day, of the feast, Jesus stood and cried aloud, saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me, and drink.
Viimeisenä juhlapäivänä, kun oli tullut juhlan kohokohta, Jeesus huusi ihmisjoukoille: »Jos jollakin on jano, niin tulkoon minun luokseni ja juokoon!
38 He that believeth in me, from within him, as the Scripture hath said, will flow rivers of living water.
Raamatussa sanotaan, että elävän veden virrat tulvivat jokaisen minuun uskovan ihmisen sisimmästä.»
39 But this he said of the Spirit, which those that believed in him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
(Tällä Jeesus tarkoitti Pyhän Hengen työtä ja lupasi Henkensä jokaiselle, joka uskoo häneen. Pyhä Henki ei ollut vielä tullut, sillä Jeesus ei ollut palannut kirkkauteensa taivaaseen.)
40 Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is in truth the prophet. Others said, This is the Christ.
Kuullessaan Jeesuksen sanat jotkut kansanjoukosta innostuivat: »Tämä mies on se odotettu profeetta!»
41 Others said, Doth the Christ then come from Galilee?
Toiset sanoivat: »Hän on Messias itse.» Kolmannet väittivät vastaan: »Se ei voi olla totta! Eihän Messias voi olla Galileasta kotoisin.
42 Hath not the Scripture said, that the Christ cometh from the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?
Raamattu sanoo selvästi, että Messias syntyy Daavidin kuningassukuun ja vielä Betlehemissä, samassa kaupungissa kuin Daavid.»
43 So there was a division among the multitude because of him.
Näin ihmisten mielipiteet Jeesuksesta menivät ristiin.
44 And some of them wished to seize him; but no one laid hands on him.
Toiset tahtoivat, että hänet pidätettäisiin, mutta kukaan ei koskenut häneen.
45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why did ye not bring him?
Temppelipoliisit, jotka oli lähetetty pidättämään Jeesusta, tulivat takaisin ylipappien ja fariseusten luo. »Miksi ette tuoneetkaan häntä?» nämä tiukkasivat.
46 The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man.
»Se mies puhuu aivan ihmeellisellä tavalla», he sanoivat. »Mitään sellaista emme ole ikinä kuulleet.»
47 The Pharisees answered them, Have ye also been deceived?
»Joko hän on saanut teidätkin kannattajikseen?» fariseukset kysyivät pilkallisesti.
48 Hath any one of the rulers believed in him? or of the Pharisees?
»Onko johtavien juutalaisten ja fariseusten joukossa yhtään ainutta, joka uskoo hänen olevan Messias?
49 but this multitude that know not the Law are accursed.
Kansa kyllä uskoo, mutta mitä tuo kirottu lauma ymmärtää koko asiasta! Eihän se tunne lakia.»
50 Nicodemus saith to them, being one of them,
Silloin Nikodeemus puuttui puheeseen. Hän oli sama mies, joka kerran oli käynyt salaa keskustelemassa Jeesuksen kanssa.
51 Doth our law judge a man, unless it first hear from him, and know what he doeth?
»Onko laillista tuomita ihminen ilman oikeudenkäyntiä?» hän kysyi. »Eikö ensin ole selvitettävä, mihin hän on syyllistynyt?»
52 They answered and said to him, Art thou too from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet ariseth from Galilee.
Johtomiehet vastasivat: »Oletko sinäkin noita galilealaisia? Katso itse Raamatusta: ei Galileasta nouse profeettaa.»
