< John 7 >

1 After these things Jesus walked in Galilee; for he would not walk in Judaea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
And after this Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Judea, because the Jews sought to kill him.
2 Now the feast of the Jews, the feast of tabernacles, was at hand.
Now the feast of tabernacles, a feast of the Jews, was near.
3 His brothers therefore said to him, Depart hence, and go into Judaea, that thy disciples also may see thy works which thou art doing.
Then his brothers said to him: Depart hence, and go into Judea, that your disciples may see your works which you do;
4 For no one doeth anything in secret, and yet himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou doest these things, manifest thyself to the world.
for no one does any thing in secret, while he himself seeks to be before the public. If you do these things, show yourself to the world.
5 For even his brothers did not believe in him.
For neither did his brothers believe on him.
6 Jesus saith to them, My time is not yet come; but your time is always ready.
Then Jesus said to them: My time has not yet come; but your time is always ready.
7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
The world can not hate you; but me it hates, because I testify of it, that its works are evil.
8 Go ye up to the feast; I go not up to this feast; for my time is not yet fully come.
Do you go up to this feast. I go not up now to this feast, because my time has not yet fully come.
9 Having said these things, he remained in Galilee.
These things said he to them, and remained in Galilee.
10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, then he also went up, not openly, but as it were in secret.
But when his brothers had gone up, then he also went up to the feast, not openly, but, as it were, in secret.
11 The Jews therefore sought him at the feast, and said, Where is that man?
Then the Jews sought for him at the feast, and said: Where is he?
12 And there was much debating among the multitude concerning him. Some said, He is a good man; others said, Nay, but he deceiveth the multitude.
And there was much murmuring among the multitudes concerning him. Some said: He is a good man. Others said: No; but he deceives the multitude.
13 No one, however, spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
However, no one spoke openly of him, for fear of the Jews.
14 But when it was now the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple and taught.
Now in the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.
15 The Jews therefore marveled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?
And the Jews were astonished, and said: How has this man a knowledge of letters, having never been taught?
16 Jesus therefore answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me.
Then Jesus answered and said: My teaching is not mine, but his who sent me.
17 If any one is desirous to do his will, he will know concerning the teaching, whether it is from God, or whether I speak from myself.
If any one will do his will, he shall know with respect to the teaching, whether it is of God, or I speak of myself.
18 He that speaketh from himself seeketh his own glory; but he that seeketh the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and in him is no unrighteousness.
He who speaks of himself, seeks his own glory; he who seeks the glory of him that sent him, he is true, and there is no unrighteousness in him.
19 Hath not Moses given you the Law? and none of you keepeth the Law! Why do ye seek to kill me?
Did not Moses give you the law? and not one of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?
20 The multitude answered, Thou hast a demon! Who seeketh to kill thee?
The multitude answered and said: You have a demon: who seeks to kill you?
21 Jesus answered and said to them, I have done one good work, and ye are all wondering.
Jesus answered and said to them: I have done one work, and you are all astonished on account of this.
22 Moses hath given you circumcision, (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers; ) and ye on the sabbath circumcise a man.
Moses gave you circumcision, (not that it is of Moses, but of the fathers, ) and you circumcise a man on the sabbath-day.
23 If a man receive circumcision on the sabbath, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are ye angry at me, because I have restored soundness to the whole body of a man on the sabbath?
If a man receives circumcision on the sabbath-day, that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I have restored the entire man to health on the sabbath-day?
24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
25 Then some of the men of Jerusalem said, Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
Then said some of the men of Jerusalem: Is not this he whom they seek to kill?
26 and see! he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers discovered certainly that this man is the Christ?
and, lo, he is speaking boldly, and they say nothing to him. Have the rulers really learned that this is the Christ?
27 Still, as to this man, we know whence he is; but when the Christ cometh, no one knoweth whence he is.
But we know this man, whence he is. But when the Christ comes, no one knows whence he is.
28 Jesus therefore cried aloud, teaching in the temple and saying, Ye both know me, and ye know whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but there is in truth one who sent me, whom ye know not.
Then Jesus cried out in the temple, as he was teaching, and said: You both know me, and you know whence I am; and I have not come of myself, but he who sent me is true, whom you know not.
29 I know him, because I am from him, and he hath sent me.
But I know him, because I am from him, and he has sent me.
30 Therefore they sought to take him; but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
Then they sought to take him; yet no one laid his hand on him, because his hour had not yet come.
31 But of the multitude many believed in him, and said, When the Christ cometh, will he do more signs than these which this man doeth?
And many of the multitude believed on him, and said: When the Christ comes, will he do more signs than these which this man has done?
32 The Pharisees heard the multitude thus debating concerning him; and the chief priest and the Pharisees sent officers to seize him.
The Pharisees heard the multitude murmuring such things concerning him; and the Pharisees and chief priests sent attendants to take him.
33 Jesus therefore said, Yet a little while I am with you, and then I go to him that sent me.
Then Jesus said to them: Yet a little while I am with you, and I go away to him that sent me.
34 Ye will seek me and not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come.
You will seek me, and shall not find me; and where I am, you can not come.
35 The Jews therefore said among themselves, Whither will this man go, that we shall not find him? Will he go to the dispersed among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks?
Then the Jews said among themselves: Whither is this man about to go, that we shall not find him? Is he about to go to those who are dispersed among the Greeks, and to teach the Greeks?
36 What meaneth this which he said, Ye will seek me, and not find me; and where I am, ye cannot come?
What means this saying which he uttered, You will seek me, and will not find me; and, Where I am you can not come?
37 On the last day, which is the great day, of the feast, Jesus stood and cried aloud, saying, If any one thirst, let him come to me, and drink.
On the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying: If any one thirst, let him come to me and drink.
38 He that believeth in me, from within him, as the Scripture hath said, will flow rivers of living water.
He that believes on me, as the scripture has said, from his inner self shall flow rivers of living water.
39 But this he said of the Spirit, which those that believed in him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
But this he spoke of the Spirit, which those who believe on him were about to receive; for the Holy Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
40 Some of the multitude therefore, when they heard these words, said, This is in truth the prophet. Others said, This is the Christ.
Therefore, many of the multitude, when they had heard this word, said: This is, in truth, the prophet.
41 Others said, Doth the Christ then come from Galilee?
Others said: This is the Christ. But others said: Does the Christ come out of Galilee?
42 Hath not the Scripture said, that the Christ cometh from the seed of David, and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?
Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from the posterity of David, and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?
43 So there was a division among the multitude because of him.
So there was a division among the multitude because of him.
44 And some of them wished to seize him; but no one laid hands on him.
And some of them desired to take him; but no one laid hands on him.
45 The officers therefore came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, Why did ye not bring him?
Then came the attendants to the chief priests and the Pharisees; and they said to them: Why have you not brought him?
46 The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man.
The attendants answered: Never did man speak like this man.
47 The Pharisees answered them, Have ye also been deceived?
Then the Pharisees answered them: Are you also deceived?
48 Hath any one of the rulers believed in him? or of the Pharisees?
Has any one of the rulers, or of the Pharisees believed on him?
49 but this multitude that know not the Law are accursed.
But this multitude that know not the law are cursed.
50 Nicodemus saith to them, being one of them,
Nicodemus said to them (he that came to Jesus by night, being one of them):
51 Doth our law judge a man, unless it first hear from him, and know what he doeth?
Does our law condemn a man unless it first hear from him, and know what he does?
52 They answered and said to him, Art thou too from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet ariseth from Galilee.
They answered and said to him: Are you also from Galilee? Search, and see that out of Galilee arises no prophet.
53 (Joh 7:53 - 8:12: This passage is omitted as ungenuine by Tischendorf and most critical editors of the Greek Testament. It is found in some manuscripts, but not in the most ancient. It is, however, very generally regarded as a genuine relic of the teaching of Christ, though not forming a part of the fourth Gospel. I give it in the text of Tregelles, omitting the words which he incloses in brackets. Tregelles, however, does not suppose it to be genuine.) [[And they went each to his house;
And every one departed to his own house.
