John 6
1 After these things Jesus went away across the lake of Galilee, that of Tiberias.
tataḥ paraṁ yīśu rgālīl pradēśīyasya tiviriyānāmnaḥ sindhōḥ pāraṁ gatavān|
2 And a great multitude followed him, because they saw the signs which he wrought on the diseased.
tatō vyādhimallōkasvāsthyakaraṇarūpāṇi tasyāścaryyāṇi karmmāṇi dr̥ṣṭvā bahavō janāstatpaścād agacchan|
3 And Jesus went up into the mountain, and sat there with his disciples.
tatō yīśuḥ parvvatamāruhya tatra śiṣyaiḥ sākam|
4 And the passover, the feast of the Jews, was near.
tasmin samaya nistārōtsavanāmni yihūdīyānāma utsava upasthitē
5 Jesus then lifting up his eyes, and seeing that a great crowd was coming to him, saith to Philip, Whence are we to buy bread, that these may eat?
yīśu rnētrē uttōlya bahulōkān svasamīpāgatān vilōkya philipaṁ pr̥ṣṭavān ētēṣāṁ bhōjanāya bhōjadravyāṇi vayaṁ kutra krētuṁ śakrumaḥ?
6 But this he said to try him; for he himself knew what he was going to do.
vākyamidaṁ tasya parīkṣārtham avādīt kintu yat kariṣyati tat svayam ajānāt|
7 Philip answered him, Two hundred denaries' worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that each one may take a tittle.
philipaḥ pratyavōcat ētēṣām ēkaikō yadyalpam alpaṁ prāpnōti tarhi mudrāpādadviśatēna krītapūpā api nyūnā bhaviṣyanti|
8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith to him,
śimōn pitarasya bhrātā āndriyākhyaḥ śiṣyāṇāmēkō vyāhr̥tavān
9 There is a lad here, who hath five barley-loaves, and two small fishes; but what are they among so many?
atra kasyacid bālakasya samīpē pañca yāvapūpāḥ kṣudramatsyadvayañca santi kintu lōkānāṁ ētāvātāṁ madhyē taiḥ kiṁ bhaviṣyati?
10 Jesus said, Make the men lie down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men lay down, in number about five thousand.
paścād yīśuravadat lōkānupavēśayata tatra bahuyavasasattvāt pañcasahastrēbhyō nyūnā adhikā vā puruṣā bhūmyām upāviśan|
11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, distributed to those that were lying down; in like manner also of the fishes, as much as they desired.
tatō yīśustān pūpānādāya īśvarasya guṇān kīrttayitvā śiṣyēṣu samārpayat tatastē tēbhya upaviṣṭalōkēbhyaḥ pūpān yathēṣṭamatsyañca prāduḥ|
12 And when they were filled, he saith to his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain over, that nothing may be lost.
tēṣu tr̥ptēṣu sa tānavōcad ētēṣāṁ kiñcidapi yathā nāpacīyatē tathā sarvvāṇyavaśiṣṭāni saṁgr̥hlīta|
13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above to those that had eaten.
tataḥ sarvvēṣāṁ bhōjanāt paraṁ tē tēṣāṁ pañcānāṁ yāvapūpānāṁ avaśiṣṭānyakhilāni saṁgr̥hya dvādaśaḍallakān apūrayan|
14 The men therefore seeing the sign which he wrought, said, This is truly the prophet that was to come into the world.
aparaṁ yīśōrētādr̥śīm āścaryyakriyāṁ dr̥ṣṭvā lōkā mithō vaktumārēbhirē jagati yasyāgamanaṁ bhaviṣyati sa ēvāyam avaśyaṁ bhaviṣyadvakttā|
15 Jesus therefore, knowing that they were about to come and take him by force to make him a king, withdrew again to the mountain alone.
ataēva lōkā āgatya tamākramya rājānaṁ kariṣyanti yīśustēṣām īdr̥śaṁ mānasaṁ vijñāya punaśca parvvatam ēkākī gatavān|
16 But when evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,
sāyaṁkāla upasthitē śiṣyā jaladhitaṭaṁ vrajitvā nāvamāruhya nagaradiśi sindhau vāhayitvāgaman|
17 and having gone on board a boat, were going over the lake to Capernaum. And darkness had overtaken them, and Jesus had not yet come to them.
tasmin samayē timira upātiṣṭhat kintu yīṣustēṣāṁ samīpaṁ nāgacchat|
18 And as a strong wind was blowing, the waves ran high.
tadā prabalapavanavahanāt sāgarē mahātaraṅgō bhavitum ārēbhē|
19 When therefore they had rowed about twenty-five or thirty furlongs, they saw Jesus walking on the lake, and drawing near the boat; and they were afraid.
tatastē vāhayitvā dvitrān krōśān gatāḥ paścād yīśuṁ jaladhērupari padbhyāṁ vrajantaṁ naukāntikam āgacchantaṁ vilōkya trāsayuktā abhavan
20 But he saith to them, It is I, be not afraid.
kintu sa tānukttavān ayamahaṁ mā bhaiṣṭa|
21 Then they were willing to receive him into the boat; and immediately the boat was at the land whither they were going.
tadā tē taṁ svairaṁ nāvi gr̥hītavantaḥ tadā tatkṣaṇād uddiṣṭasthānē naurupāsthāt|
22 The day following, the multitude which stood on the other side of the lake having seen that there was no other boat there but one, and that Jesus did not go with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples went away alone,
yayā nāvā śiṣyā agacchan tadanyā kāpi naukā tasmin sthānē nāsīt tatō yīśuḥ śiṣyaiḥ sākaṁ nāgamat kēvalāḥ śiṣyā agaman ētat pārasthā lōkā jñātavantaḥ|
23 (but there came other boats from Tiberias near the place where they ate the bread, when the Lord had given thanks; )
kintu tataḥ paraṁ prabhu ryatra īśvarasya guṇān anukīrttya lōkān pūpān abhōjayat tatsthānasya samīpasthativiriyāyā aparāstaraṇaya āgaman|
24 when therefore the multitude saw that Jesus was not there nor his disciples, they went on board the boats, and came to Capernaum, seeking Jesus.
yīśustatra nāsti śiṣyā api tatra nā santi lōkā iti vijñāya yīśuṁ gavēṣayituṁ taraṇibhiḥ kapharnāhūm puraṁ gatāḥ|
25 And having found him on the other side of the lake, they said to him, Rabbi, when didst thou come hither?
tatastē saritpatēḥ pārē taṁ sākṣāt prāpya prāvōcan hē gurō bhavān atra sthānē kadāgamat?
26 Jesus answered them and said, Truly, truly do I say to you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw signs, but because ye ate of the loaves, and were filled.
tadā yīśustān pratyavādīd yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthataraṁ vadāmi āścaryyakarmmadarśanāddhētō rna kintu pūpabhōjanāt tēna tr̥ptatvāñca māṁ gavēṣayatha|
27 Labor not for the food that perisheth, but for the food that endureth to everlasting life, which the Son of man giveth to you; for on him hath the Father set his seal, even God. (aiōnios g166)
kṣayaṇīyabhakṣyārthaṁ mā śrāmiṣṭa kintvantāyurbhakṣyārthaṁ śrāmyata, tasmāt tādr̥śaṁ bhakṣyaṁ manujaputrō yuṣmābhyaṁ dāsyati; tasmin tāta īśvaraḥ pramāṇaṁ prādāt| (aiōnios g166)
28 Then they said to him, What are we to do, that we may work the works of God?
tadā tē'pr̥cchan īśvarābhimataṁ karmma karttum asmābhiḥ kiṁ karttavyaṁ?
29 Jesus answered and said to them, This is the work of God, that ye believe in him whom he sent.
tatō yīśuravadad īśvarō yaṁ prairayat tasmin viśvasanam īśvarābhimataṁ karmma|
30 They said therefore to him, What sign doest thou, that we may see, and believe thee? What dost thou work?
tadā tē vyāharan bhavatā kiṁ lakṣaṇaṁ darśitaṁ yaddr̥ṣṭvā bhavati viśvasiṣyāmaḥ? tvayā kiṁ karmma kr̥taṁ?
31 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”
asmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣā mahāprāntarē mānnāṁ bhōkttuṁ prāpuḥ yathā lipirāstē| svargīyāṇi tu bhakṣyāṇi pradadau paramēśvaraḥ|
32 Jesus therefore said to them, Truly, truly do I say to you, Moses hath not given you the bread from heaven; but my Father is giving you the true bread from heaven.
tadā yīśuravadad ahaṁ yuṣmānatiyathārthaṁ vadāmi mūsā yuṣmābhyaṁ svargīyaṁ bhakṣyaṁ nādāt kintu mama pitā yuṣmābhyaṁ svargīyaṁ paramaṁ bhakṣyaṁ dadāti|
33 For the bread of God is that which is coming down from heaven, and giving life to the world.
yaḥ svargādavaruhya jagatē jīvanaṁ dadāti sa īśvaradattabhakṣyarūpaḥ|
34 They said therefore to him, Lord, evermore give us this bread.
tadā tē prāvōcan hē prabhō bhakṣyamidaṁ nityamasmabhyaṁ dadātu|
35 Jesus therefore said to them, I am the bread of life; he that cometh to me will not hunger; and he that believeth in me will never thirst.
yīśuravadad ahamēva jīvanarūpaṁ bhakṣyaṁ yō janō mama sannidhim āgacchati sa jātu kṣudhārttō na bhaviṣyati, tathā yō janō māṁ pratyēti sa jātu tr̥ṣārttō na bhaviṣyati|
36 But I said to you, that ye have even seen, and do not believe.
māṁ dr̥ṣṭvāpi yūyaṁ na viśvasitha yuṣmānaham ityavōcaṁ|
37 All that the Father giveth me will come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out;
pitā mahyaṁ yāvatō lōkānadadāt tē sarvva ēva mamāntikam āgamiṣyanti yaḥ kaścicca mama sannidhim āyāsyati taṁ kēnāpi prakārēṇa na dūrīkariṣyāmi|
38 for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him that sent me.
nijābhimataṁ sādhayituṁ na hi kintu prērayiturabhimataṁ sādhayituṁ svargād āgatōsmi|
39 And this is the will of him that sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up in the last day.
sa yān yān lōkān mahyamadadāt tēṣāmēkamapi na hārayitvā śēṣadinē sarvvānaham utthāpayāmi idaṁ matprērayituḥ piturabhimataṁ|
40 For this is the will of my Father, that every one who looketh on the Son and believeth in him, shall have everlasting life; and I will raise him up in the last day. (aiōnios g166)
yaḥ kaścin mānavasutaṁ vilōkya viśvasiti sa śēṣadinē mayōtthāpitaḥ san anantāyuḥ prāpsyati iti matprērakasyābhimataṁ| (aiōnios g166)
41 The Jews therefore murmured about him, because he said, I am the bread which came down from heaven;
tadā svargād yad bhakṣyam avārōhat tad bhakṣyam ahamēva yihūdīyalōkāstasyaitad vākyē vivadamānā vakttumārēbhirē
42 and they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, one whose father and mother we know? How is it then that this man saith, I have come down from heaven?
yūṣaphaḥ putrō yīśu ryasya mātāpitarau vayaṁ jānīma ēṣa kiṁ saēva na? tarhi svargād avārōham iti vākyaṁ kathaṁ vaktti?
43 Jesus therefore answered and said to them, Murmur not among yourselves.
tadā yīśustān pratyavadat parasparaṁ mā vivadadhvaṁ
44 No one can come to me, unless the Father, who sent me, draw him: and I will raise him up in the last day.
matprērakēṇa pitrā nākr̥ṣṭaḥ kōpi janō mamāntikam āyātuṁ na śaknōti kintvāgataṁ janaṁ caramē'hni prōtthāpayiṣyāmi|
45 It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught of God.” Every one that hath heard the Father, and hath learnt from him, cometh to me.
tē sarvva īśvarēṇa śikṣitā bhaviṣyanti bhaviṣyadvādināṁ granthēṣu lipiritthamāstē atō yaḥ kaścit pituḥ sakāśāt śrutvā śikṣatē sa ēva mama samīpam āgamiṣyati|
46 Not that any one hath seen the Father, but he who is from God; he hath seen the Father.
ya īśvarād ajāyata taṁ vinā kōpi manuṣyō janakaṁ nādarśat kēvalaḥ saēva tātam adrākṣīt|
ahaṁ yuṣmān yathārthataraṁ vadāmi yō janō mayi viśvāsaṁ karōti sōnantāyuḥ prāpnōti| (aiōnios g166)
48 I am the bread of life.
ahamēva tajjīvanabhakṣyaṁ|
49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and died.
yuṣmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣā mahāprāntarē mannābhakṣyaṁ bhūkttāpi mr̥tāḥ
50 This is the bread which is coming down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.
kintu yadbhakṣyaṁ svargādāgacchat tad yadi kaścid bhuṅkttē tarhi sa na mriyatē|
51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eat of my bread, he will live for ever. Yea, and the bread which I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. (aiōn g165)
yajjīvanabhakṣyaṁ svargādāgacchat sōhamēva idaṁ bhakṣyaṁ yō janō bhuṅkttē sa nityajīvī bhaviṣyati| punaśca jagatō jīvanārthamahaṁ yat svakīyapiśitaṁ dāsyāmi tadēva mayā vitaritaṁ bhakṣyam| (aiōn g165)
52 The Jews therefore contended with one another, saying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?
tasmād yihūdīyāḥ parasparaṁ vivadamānā vakttumārēbhirē ēṣa bhōjanārthaṁ svīyaṁ palalaṁ katham asmabhyaṁ dāsyati?
53 Jesus therefore said to them, Truly, truly do I say to you, Unless ye eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.
tadā yīśustān āvōcad yuṣmānahaṁ yathārthataraṁ vadāmi manuṣyaputrasyāmiṣē yuṣmābhi rna bhukttē tasya rudhirē ca na pītē jīvanēna sārddhaṁ yuṣmākaṁ sambandhō nāsti|
54 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath everlasting life; and I will raise him up in the last day. (aiōnios g166)
yō mamāmiṣaṁ svādati mama sudhirañca pivati sōnantāyuḥ prāpnōti tataḥ śēṣē'hni tamaham utthāpayiṣyāmi| (aiōnios g166)
55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.
yatō madīyamāmiṣaṁ paramaṁ bhakṣyaṁ tathā madīyaṁ śōṇitaṁ paramaṁ pēyaṁ|
56 He that eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood dwelleth in me, and I in him.
yō janō madīyaṁ palalaṁ svādati madīyaṁ rudhirañca pivati sa mayi vasati tasminnahañca vasāmi|
57 As the living Father sent me, and I live by reason of the Father; so he that eateth me, he also shall live by reason of me.
matprērayitrā jīvatā tātēna yathāhaṁ jīvāmi tadvad yaḥ kaścin māmatti sōpi mayā jīviṣyati|
58 This is the bread which came down from heaven; not as the fathers ate, and died; he that eateth this bread will live for ever. (aiōn g165)
yadbhakṣyaṁ svargādāgacchat tadidaṁ yanmānnāṁ svāditvā yuṣmākaṁ pitarō'mriyanta tādr̥śam idaṁ bhakṣyaṁ na bhavati idaṁ bhakṣyaṁ yō bhakṣati sa nityaṁ jīviṣyati| (aiōn g165)
59 These things he said in a synagogue, while teaching in Capernaum.
yadā kapharnāhūm puryyāṁ bhajanagēhē upādiśat tadā kathā ētā akathayat|
60 Many therefore of his disciples, when they heard this, said, This teaching is hard; who can listen to it?
tadētthaṁ śrutvā tasya śiṣyāṇām anēkē parasparam akathayan idaṁ gāḍhaṁ vākyaṁ vākyamīdr̥śaṁ kaḥ śrōtuṁ śakruyāt?
61 Jesus therefore knew within himself that his disciples were murmuring about this, and said to them, Doth this offend you?
kintu yīśuḥ śiṣyāṇām itthaṁ vivādaṁ svacittē vijñāya kathitavān idaṁ vākyaṁ kiṁ yuṣmākaṁ vighnaṁ janayati?
62 What then if ye behold the Son of man ascending where he was before?
yadi manujasutaṁ pūrvvavāsasthānam ūrdvvaṁ gacchantaṁ paśyatha tarhi kiṁ bhaviṣyati?
63 It is the spirit which maketh alive; the flesh profiteth nothing. The words which I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life.
ātmaiva jīvanadāyakaḥ vapu rniṣphalaṁ yuṣmabhyamahaṁ yāni vacāṁsi kathayāmi tānyātmā jīvanañca|
64 But there are some of you who do not believe. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that did not believe, and who it was that would betray him.
kintu yuṣmākaṁ madhyē kēcana aviśvāsinaḥ santi kē kē na viśvasanti kō vā taṁ parakarēṣu samarpayiṣyati tān yīśurāprathamād vētti|
65 And he said, For this cause I have told you, that no one can come to me, unless it hath been given him from the Father.
aparamapi kathitavān asmāt kāraṇād akathayaṁ pituḥ sakāśāt śakttimaprāpya kōpi mamāntikam āgantuṁ na śaknōti|
66 From this time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
tatkālē'nēkē śiṣyā vyāghuṭya tēna sārddhaṁ puna rnāgacchan|
67 Jesus therefore said to the twelve, Do ye also wish to go away?
tadā yīśu rdvādaśaśiṣyān ukttavān yūyamapi kiṁ yāsyatha?
68 Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast words of everlasting life; (aiōnios g166)
tataḥ śimōn pitaraḥ pratyavōcat hē prabhō kasyābhyarṇaṁ gamiṣyāmaḥ? (aiōnios g166)
69 and we have believed and known, that thou art the Holy One of God.
anantajīvanadāyinyō yāḥ kathāstāstavaiva| bhavān amarēśvarasyābhiṣikttaputra iti viśvasya niścitaṁ jānīmaḥ|
70 Jesus answered them, Did not I choose you twelve? and one of you is a devil!
tadā yīśuravadat kimahaṁ yuṣmākaṁ dvādaśajanān manōnītān na kr̥tavān? kintu yuṣmākaṁ madhyēpi kaścidēkō vighnakārī vidyatē|
71 He spoke of Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot; for it was he that was about to betray him, being one of the twelve.
imāṁ kathaṁ sa śimōnaḥ putram īṣkarīyōtīyaṁ yihūdām uddiśya kathitavān yatō dvādaśānāṁ madhyē gaṇitaḥ sa taṁ parakarēṣu samarpayiṣyati|
