John 4
1 When therefore Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John,
yīśuḥ svayaṁ nāmajjayat kēvalaṁ tasya śiṣyā amajjayat kintu yōhanō'dhikaśiṣyān sa karōti majjayati ca,
2 (though Jesus himself did not baptize, but his disciples, )
phirūśina imāṁ vārttāmaśr̥ṇvan iti prabhuravagatya
3 he left Judaea, and went again to Galilee.
yihūdīyadēśaṁ vihāya puna rgālīlam āgat|
4 And he must necessarily pass through Samaria.
tataḥ śōmirōṇapradēśasya madyēna tēna gantavyē sati
5 He cometh therefore to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near the piece of land which Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
yākūb nijaputrāya yūṣaphē yāṁ bhūmim adadāt tatsamīpasthāyi śōmirōṇapradēśasya sukhār nāmnā vikhyātasya nagarasya sannidhāvupāsthāt|
6 And Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with the journey, was sitting thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.
tatra yākūbaḥ prahirāsīt; tadā dvitīyayāmavēlāyāṁ jātāyāṁ sa mārgē śramāpannastasya prahēḥ pārśvē upāviśat|
7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, Give me to drink.
ētarhi kācit śōmirōṇīyā yōṣit tōyōttōlanārtham tatrāgamat
8 For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.
tadā śiṣyāḥ khādyadravyāṇi krētuṁ nagaram agacchan|
9 The Samaritan woman saith to him, How is it that thou, who art a Jew, askest drink of me, who am a Samaritan woman? For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.
yīśuḥ śōmirōṇīyāṁ tāṁ yōṣitam vyāhārṣīt mahyaṁ kiñcit pānīyaṁ pātuṁ dēhi| kintu śōmirōṇīyaiḥ sākaṁ yihūdīyalōkā na vyavāharan tasmāddhētōḥ sākathayat śōmirōṇīyā yōṣitadahaṁ tvaṁ yihūdīyōsi kathaṁ mattaḥ pānīyaṁ pātum icchasi?
10 Jesus answered and said to her, If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.
tatō yīśuravadad īśvarasya yaddānaṁ tatkīdr̥k pānīyaṁ pātuṁ mahyaṁ dēhi ya itthaṁ tvāṁ yācatē sa vā ka iti cēdajñāsyathāstarhi tamayāciṣyathāḥ sa ca tubhyamamr̥taṁ tōyamadāsyat|
11 The woman saith to him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Whence hast thou the living water?
tadā sā sīmantinī bhāṣitavati, hē mahēccha prahirgambhīrō bhavatō nīrōttōlanapātraṁ nāstī ca tasmāt tadamr̥taṁ kīlālaṁ kutaḥ prāpsyasi?
12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his sons, and his cattle?
yōsmabhyam imamandhūṁ dadau, yasya ca parijanā gōmēṣādayaśca sarvvē'sya prahēḥ pānīyaṁ papurētādr̥śō yōsmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣō yākūb tasmādapi bhavān mahān kiṁ?
13 Jesus answered and said to her, Every one that drinketh of this water, will thirst again;
tatō yīśurakathayad idaṁ pānīyaṁ saḥ pivati sa punastr̥ṣārttō bhaviṣyati,
15 The woman saith to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.
tadā sā vanitākathayat hē mahēccha tarhi mama punaḥ pīpāsā yathā na jāyatē tōyōttōlanāya yathātrāgamanaṁ na bhavati ca tadarthaṁ mahyaṁ tattōyaṁ dēhī|
16 He saith to her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
tatō yīśūravadadyāhi tava patimāhūya sthānē'trāgaccha|
17 The woman answered, I have no husband. Jesus saith to her, Thou saidst well, that thou hast no husband.
sā vāmāvadat mama patirnāsti| yīśuravadat mama patirnāstīti vākyaṁ bhadramavōcaḥ|
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband; in this thou hast spoken truly.
yatastava pañca patayōbhavan adhunā tu tvayā sārddhaṁ yastiṣṭhati sa tava bharttā na vākyamidaṁ satyamavādiḥ|
19 The woman saith to him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
tadā sā mahilā gaditavati hē mahēccha bhavān ēkō bhaviṣyadvādīti buddhaṁ mayā|
20 Our fathers worshipped on this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.
asmākaṁ pitr̥lōkā ētasmin śilōccayē'bhajanta, kintu bhavadbhirucyatē yirūśālam nagarē bhajanayōgyaṁ sthānamāstē|
21 Jesus saith to her, Believe me, woman, the hour is coming, when ye shall neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father.
yīśuravōcat hē yōṣit mama vākyē viśvasihi yadā yūyaṁ kēvalaśailē'smin vā yirūśālam nagarē piturbhajanaṁ na kariṣyadhvē kāla ētādr̥śa āyāti|
22 Ye worship that which ye know not; we worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.
yūyaṁ yaṁ bhajadhvē taṁ na jānītha, kintu vayaṁ yaṁ bhajāmahē taṁ jānīmahē, yatō yihūdīyalōkānāṁ madhyāt paritrāṇaṁ jāyatē|
23 But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth; for such worshippers the Father seeketh.
kintu yadā satyabhaktā ātmanā satyarūpēṇa ca piturbhajanaṁ kariṣyantē samaya ētādr̥śa āyāti, varam idānīmapi vidyatē; yata ētādr̥śō bhatkān pitā cēṣṭatē|
24 God is a spirit; and they who worship must worship in spirit and in truth.
īśvara ātmā; tatastasya yē bhaktāstaiḥ sa ātmanā satyarūpēṇa ca bhajanīyaḥ|
25 The woman saith to him, I know that Messiah cometh (who is called Christ); when he hath come, he will tell us all things.
tadā sā mahilāvādīt khrīṣṭanāmnā vikhyātō'bhiṣiktaḥ puruṣa āgamiṣyatīti jānāmi sa ca sarvvāḥ kathā asmān jñāpayiṣyati|
26 Jesus saith to her, I who speak to thee am he.
tatō yīśuravadat tvayā sārddhaṁ kathanaṁ karōmi yō'ham ahamēva sa puruṣaḥ|
27 And upon this his disciples came, and marveled that he was talking with a woman. Yet no one said, What dost thou seek? or, Why dost thou talk with her?
ētasmin samayē śiṣyā āgatya tathā striyā sārddhaṁ tasya kathōpakathanē mahāścaryyam amanyanta tathāpi bhavān kimicchati? yadvā kimartham ētayā sārddhaṁ kathāṁ kathayati? iti kōpi nāpr̥cchat|
28 The woman then left her water-pot, and went away into the city, and saith to the men,
tataḥ paraṁ sā nārī kalaśaṁ sthāpayitvā nagaramadhyaṁ gatvā lōkēbhyōkathāyad
29 Come, see a man who told me all things which I have done. Is this the Christ?
ahaṁ yadyat karmmākaravaṁ tatsarvvaṁ mahyamakathayad ētādr̥śaṁ mānavamēkam āgatya paśyata ru kim abhiṣiktō na bhavati?
30 They went out of the city, and came to him.
tatastē nagarād bahirāgatya tātasya samīpam āyan|
31 In the mean while the disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, eat.
ētarhi śiṣyāḥ sādhayitvā taṁ vyāhārṣuḥ hē gurō bhavān kiñcid bhūktāṁ|
32 But he said to them, I have food to eat that ye know not of.
tataḥ sōvadad yuṣmābhiryanna jñāyatē tādr̥śaṁ bhakṣyaṁ mamāstē|
33 The disciples therefore said to one another, Hath any one brought him anything to eat?
tadā śiṣyāḥ parasparaṁ praṣṭum ārambhanta, kimasmai kōpi kimapi bhakṣyamānīya dattavān?
34 Jesus saith to them, My food is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
yīśuravōcat matprērakasyābhimatānurūpakaraṇaṁ tasyaiva karmmasiddhikāraṇañca mama bhakṣyaṁ|
35 Do ye not say, There are yet four months, and the harvest cometh? Lo! I say to you, lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they are white for harvest.
māsacatuṣṭayē jātē śasyakarttanasamayō bhaviṣyatīti vākyaṁ yuṣmābhiḥ kiṁ nōdyatē? kintvahaṁ vadāmi, śira uttōlya kṣētrāṇi prati nirīkṣya paśyata, idānīṁ karttanayōgyāni śuklavarṇānyabhavan|
36 Already is the reaper receiving wages, and gathering fruit unto everlasting life; that both the sower and the reaper may rejoice together. (aiōnios g166)
yaśchinatti sa vētanaṁ labhatē anantāyuḥsvarūpaṁ śasyaṁ sa gr̥hlāti ca, tēnaiva vaptā chēttā ca yugapad ānandataḥ| (aiōnios g166)
37 And herein is fulfilled the true saying, One soweth, and another reapeth.
itthaṁ sati vapatyēkaśchinatyanya iti vacanaṁ siddhyati|
38 I have sent you to reap that whereon ye have not labored. Others have labored, and ye have entered into their labor.
yatra yūyaṁ na paryyaśrāmyata tādr̥śaṁ śasyaṁ chēttuṁ yuṣmān prairayam anyē janāḥparyyaśrāmyan yūyaṁ tēṣāṁ śragasya phalam alabhadhvam|
39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in him because of the words of the woman, who testified, He told me all things which I have done.
yasmin kālē yadyat karmmākārṣaṁ tatsarvvaṁ sa mahyam akathayat tasyā vanitāyā idaṁ sākṣyavākyaṁ śrutvā tannagaranivāsinō bahavaḥ śōmirōṇīyalōkā vyaśvasan|
40 When therefore the Samaritans came to him, they besought him to remain with them; and he remained there two days.
tathā ca tasyāntikē samupasthāya svēṣāṁ sannidhau katicid dināni sthātuṁ tasmin vinayam akurvvāna tasmāt sa dinadvayaṁ tatsthānē nyavaṣṭat
41 And many more believed on account of his word;
tatastasyōpadēśēna bahavō'parē viśvasya
42 and said to the woman, No longer do we believe on account of what thou hast told us; for we have ourselves heard him, and know that this is in truth the Saviour of the world.
tāṁ yōṣāmavadan kēvalaṁ tava vākyēna pratīma iti na, kintu sa jagatō'bhiṣiktastrātēti tasya kathāṁ śrutvā vayaṁ svayamēvājñāsamahi|
43 And after the two days he went from that place into Galilee.
svadēśē bhaviṣyadvaktuḥ satkārō nāstīti yadyapi yīśuḥ pramāṇaṁ datvākathayat
44 For Jesus himself testified, that a prophet hath no honor in his own country.
tathāpi divasadvayāt paraṁ sa tasmāt sthānād gālīlaṁ gatavān|
45 When therefore he came into Galilee, the Galilaeans received him, having seen all that he did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also went to the feast.
anantaraṁ yē gālīlī liyalōkā utsavē gatā utsavasamayē yirūśalam nagarē tasya sarvvāḥ kriyā apaśyan tē gālīlam āgataṁ tam āgr̥hlan|
46 So he came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman, whose son was sick, at Capernaum.
tataḥ param yīśu ryasmin kānnānagarē jalaṁ drākṣārasam ākarōt tat sthānaṁ punaragāt| tasminnēva samayē kasyacid rājasabhāstārasya putraḥ kapharnāhūmapurī rōgagrasta āsīt|
47 He, having heard that Jesus had come out of Judaea into Galilee, went to him, and asked him to go down and heal his son; for he was at the point of death.
sa yēhūdīyadēśād yīśō rgālīlāgamanavārttāṁ niśamya tasya samīpaṁ gatvā prārthya vyāhr̥tavān mama putrasya prāyēṇa kāla āsannaḥ bhavān āgatya taṁ svasthaṁ karōtu|
48 Then Jesus said to him, Unless ye see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.
tadā yīśurakathayad āścaryyaṁ karmma citraṁ cihnaṁ ca na dr̥ṣṭā yūyaṁ na pratyēṣyatha|
49 The nobleman saith to him, Sir, come down before my child die.
tataḥ sa sabhāsadavadat hē mahēccha mama putrē na mr̥tē bhavānāgacchatu|
50 Jesus saith to him, Go; thy son liveth. The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and went away.
yīśustamavadad gaccha tava putrō'jīvīt tadā yīśunōktavākyē sa viśvasya gatavān|
51 And as he was now going down, the servants met him, and brought word that his child was living.
gamanakālē mārgamadhyē dāsāstaṁ sākṣātprāpyāvadan bhavataḥ putrō'jīvīt|
52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he began to mend. And they said to him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.
tataḥ kaṁ kālamārabhya rōgapratīkārārambhō jātā iti pr̥ṣṭē tairuktaṁ hyaḥ sārddhadaṇḍadvayādhikadvitīyayāmē tasya jvaratyāgō'bhavat|
53 So the father knew that it was in the same hour in which Jesus said to him, Thy son is living. And he himself believed, and his whole house.
tadā yīśustasmin kṣaṇē prōktavān tava putrō'jīvīt pitā tadbuddhvā saparivārō vyaśvasīt|
54 This again, a second sign, Jesus wrought, when he had come out of Judaea into Galilee.
yihūdīyadēśād āgatya gālīli yīśurētad dvitīyam āścaryyakarmmākarōt|
