John 18
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples across the brook Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples.
Après avoir dit ces choses, Jésus s'en alla avec ses disciples au delà du torrent du Cédron; il y avait là un jardin dans lequel il entra, ainsi que ses disciples.
2 And Judas also, his betrayer, knew the place; because Jesus often resorted thither with his disciples.
Or, Judas, celui qui le trahissait, connaissait aussi cet endroit, parce que Jésus et ses disciples s'y étaient souvent réunis.
3 Judas then, having received the band of soldiers, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with torches and lanterns and weapons.
Judas, ayant donc pris la cohorte et les agents envoyés par les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens, vint dans ce lieu avec des lanternes, des torches et des armes.
4 But Jesus, knowing all things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith to them, Whom do ye seek?
Jésus, qui savait tout ce qui allait lui arriver, s'avança et leur dit: Qui cherchez-vous?
5 They answered him, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus saith to them, I am he. Now Judas also, his betrayer, was standing with them.
Ils lui répondirent: Jésus de Nazareth. Jésus leur dit: C'est moi! Judas, qui le trahissait, se trouvait aussi avec eux.
6 As soon then as he said to them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.
Dès que Jésus leur eut dit: C'est moi! — ils reculèrent et tombèrent à terre.
7 Again therefore he asked them, Whom do ye seek? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
Il leur demanda encore une fois: Qui cherchez-vous? Ils répondirent: Jésus de Nazareth.
8 Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore ye are seeking me, let these men go.
Jésus reprit: Je vous ai dit que c'est moi; si donc c'est moi que vous cherchez, laissez aller ceux-ci.
9 That the saying might be fulfilled which he spoke, “Of those whom thou hast given me, I have lost none.”
Ainsi fut accomplie la parole qu'il avait dite: Je n'ai perdu aucun de ceux que tu m'as donnés.
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and smote the servant of the high-priest, and cut off his right ear. And the servant's name was Malchus.
Alors Simon Pierre, qui avait une épée, la tira, frappa le serviteur du souverain sacrificateur, et lui coupa l'oreille droite. Ce serviteur s'appelait Malchus.
11 Jesus therefore said to Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath. The cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
Mais Jésus dit à Pierre: Remets ton épée dans le fourreau: ne boirai-je pas la coupe que le Père m'a donnée à boire?
12 So the band and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took Jesus and bound him,
La cohorte, le tribun et les agents des Juifs, se saisirent alors de Jésus et le chargèrent de liens.
13 and carried him to Annas first; for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high-priest that year.
Ils l'emmenèrent d'abord chez Anne; car il était le beau-père de Caïphe, qui était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là.
14 And it was Caiaphas who counseled the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
Or, Caïphe était celui qui avait donné ce conseil aux Juifs: Il vaut mieux qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple.
15 And Simon Peter and the other disciple followed Jesus. That disciple was an acquaintance of the high-priest, and went with Jesus into the court of the palace of the high-priest.
Simon Pierre, avec un autre disciple, suivait Jésus. Cet autre disciple était connu du souverain sacrificateur; il entra donc avec Jésus dans la cour du souverain sacrificateur.
16 But Peter was standing outside at the door. The other disciple therefore, who was an acquaintance of the high-priest, went out and spoke to her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
Mais Pierre se tenait dehors, près de la porte. L'autre disciple, qui était connu du souverain sacrificateur, sortit, parla à la portière, et fit entrer Pierre.
17 Then the maid-servant that kept the door saith to Peter, Art thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
Alors cette servante, qui gardait la porte, dit à Pierre: N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, des disciples de cet homme? Il répondit: Je n'en suis pas.
18 And the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold, and were warming themselves; and Peter was standing with them and warming himself.
Les serviteurs et les agents se tenaient là auprès d'un feu qu'ils avaient allumé, parce qu'il faisait froid, et ils se chauffaient. Pierre se tenait avec eux, et il se chauffait aussi.
19 The high-priest then asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.
Le souverain sacrificateur interrogea donc Jésus sur ses disciples et sur sa doctrine.
20 Jesus answered him, I have spoken plainly to the world; I always taught in a synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews assemble, and in secret I spoke nothing.
Jésus lui répondit: J'ai parlé ouvertement au monde; j'ai toujours enseigné dans la synagogue et dans le temple, où se rassemblent tous les Juifs, et je n'ai rien dit en secret.
21 Why askest thou me? Ask those who have heard, what I have spoken to them; behold, these know what I have said.
Pourquoi m'interroges-tu? Demande à ceux qui m'ont entendu ce que je leur ai dit; ceux-là savent ce que j'ai dit.
22 And when he had said this, one of the officers who was standing by struck Jesus on the face, saying, Is it thus that thou answerest the high-priest?
Comme il parlait ainsi, un des agents qui étaient présents donna un soufflet à Jésus, en disant: Est-ce ainsi que tu réponds au souverain sacrificateur?
23 Jesus answered him, If I spoke what is evil, testify to the evil; but if well, why dost thou strike me?
Jésus lui répondit: Si j'ai mal parlé, fais voir ce que j'ai dit de mal; mais si j'ai bien parlé, pourquoi me frappes-tu?
24 Annas therefore sent him bound to Caiaphas the high-priest.
Alors Anne l'envoya, chargé de liens, à Caïphe, le souverain sacrificateur.
25 And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, Art thou also one of his disciples? He denied and said, I am not.
Cependant, Simon Pierre se tenait là et se chauffait; et on lui dit: N'es-tu pas, toi aussi, de ses disciples? Il le nia et répondit: Je n'en suis pas.
26 One of the servants of the high-priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
L'un des serviteurs du souverain sacrificateur, parent de celui à qui Pierre avait coupé l'oreille, lui dit: Ne t'ai-je pas vu dans le jardin avec lui?
27 Then Peter denied again; and immediately a cock crew.
Pierre nia une fois encore; et aussitôt le coq chanta.
28 Then they lead Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor's palace; and it was early. And they did not themselves go into the palace, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.
Ils emmenèrent ensuite Jésus de chez Caïphe au prétoire; c'était le matin. Mais ils n'entrèrent pas eux-mêmes dans le prétoire, afin de ne point se souiller et de pouvoir manger la Pâque.
29 Pilate therefore went out to them, and saith, What accusation do ye bring against this man?
Pilate sortit donc, alla vers eux et leur dit: Quelle accusation portez-vous contre cet homme?
30 They answered and said to him, If he had not been doing evil, we would not have delivered him up to thee.
Ils lui répondirent: Si ce n'était pas un malfaiteur, nous ne te l'aurions pas livré.
31 Pilate therefore said to them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him, It is not lawful for us to put any one to death.
Alors Pilate leur dit: Prenez-le vous-mêmes et jugez-le selon votre loi. Les juifs lui dirent: Il ne nous est pas permis de faire mourir personne.
32 That the words of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying what kind of death he was to die.
C'était afin que fût accompli ce que Jésus avait dit, pour indiquer de quelle mort il devait mourir.
33 Pilate therefore went into the palace again, and called Jesus, and said to him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
Alors Pilate rentra dans le prétoire, et, ayant fait venir Jésus, il lui dit: C'est toi qui es le roi des Juifs?
34 Jesus answered, Dost thou say this of thyself, or did others tell thee concerning me?
Jésus répondit: Dis-tu cela de ton propre mouvement, ou d'autres te l'ont-ils dit de moi?
35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thy own nation and the chief priests delivered thee up to me. What hast thou done?
Pilate répondit; Suis-je Juif? Ta nation et les principaux sacrificateurs t'ont livré à moi; qu'as-tu fait?
36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have fought, that I should not be delivered up to the Jews; but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Jésus répondit: Mon règne n'est pas de ce monde. Si mon règne était de ce monde, mes gens combattraient, pour que je ne fusse pas livré aux Juifs; mais maintenant mon règne n'est pas d'ici-bas.
37 Pilate therefore said to him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest what is true; for I am a king. For this end have I been born, and for this cause have I come into the world, that I may bear witness to the truth. Every one that is of the truth listeneth to my voice.
Alors Pilate lui dit: Tu es donc roi? Jésus répondit: Tu le dis, je suis roi. Voici pourquoi je suis né et pourquoi je suis venu dans le monde: c'est pour rendre témoignage à la vérité. Quiconque est pour la vérité écoute ma voix.
38 Pilate saith to him, What is truth? And having said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them, I find nothing criminal in him.
Pilate lui dit: Qu'est-ce que la vérité? Quand Pilate eut dit cela, il sortit de nouveau pour aller vers les Juifs, et il leur dit: Je ne trouve aucun crime en lui.
39 But ye have a custom that I should release to you one at the passover: do ye desire, therefore, that I release to you the king of the Jews?
Mais vous avez une coutume, c'est que je vous relâche quelqu'un à la fête de Pâque; voulez-vous donc que je vous relâche le roi des Juifs?
40 Then they cried out again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.
Alors ils s'écrièrent de nouveau: Non! Pas lui, mais Barabbas! Or, Barabbas était un brigand.
