< John 14 >
1 Let not your heart be troubled. Have faith in God, and have faith in me.
“Don't let your minds be anxious. Trust in God, trust in me as well.
2 In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. For I go away to prepare a place for you;
In my Father's house there are many rooms. If this wasn't so I would have told you. I'm going to prepare a place for you.
3 and when I have gone away and prepared a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, ye also may be.
Once I've gone and prepared a place for you, I will come again and take you back with me, so that you can be there with me too.
4 And ye know the way whither I go.
You know the way to where I'm going.”
5 Thomas saith to him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how then do we know the way?
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don't know where you're going. How can we know the way?”
6 Jesus saith to him, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one cometh to the Father but through me.
Jesus replied, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If ye knew me, ye would know my Father also; and from this time ye know him, and have seen him.
If you had known me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and you have seen him.”
8 Philip saith to him, Lord, show us the Father, and we shall be satisfied.
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father, and we'll be convinced.”
9 Jesus saith to him, Have I been so long time with you, and dost thou not know me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; how is it that thou sayest, Show us the Father?
Jesus replied, “Have I been with you such a long time, Philip, and yet you still don't know me? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10 Dost thou not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I speak to you, I speak not from myself; but the Father, who dwelleth in me, doeth his works.
Don't you believe that I live in the Father and the Father lives in me? The words I speak are not mine; it's the Father living in me who is doing his work.
11 Believe me, that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; but if not, believe for the very works' sake.
Believe me when I tell you that I live in the Father, and the Father lives in me, or at least believe because of the evidence provided by all that I've done.
12 Truly, truly do I say to you, He that believeth in me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater than these shall he do; because I am going to the Father,
I tell you the truth, anyone who trusts in me will do the same things I am doing. In fact they will do even greater things because I am going to the Father.
13 and whatever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do; that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
I'll do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified through the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Whatever you ask for in my name, I will do it.
15 If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments;
If you love me, you will keep my commands.
16 and I will pray the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, that he may be with you for ever; (aiōn )
I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Comforter, (aiōn )
17 the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot receive, because it doth not behold it, nor know it; ye know it, because it abideth with you, and will be in you.
the Spirit of truth, who will always be with you. The world cannot accept him because it isn't looking for him and does not know him. But you know him because he lives with you and will be in you.
18 I will not leave you bereaved; I am coming to you.
I will not abandon you like orphans: I will come back to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world beholdeth me no more; but ye will behold me, because I live, and ye will live.
Soon the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you will live too.
20 In that day ye will know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
On that day you will know that I live in the Father, you live in me, and I live in you.
21 He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me will be loved by my Father; and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Those who keep my commands are the ones who love me, those who love me will be loved by my Father. I will love them too, and will reveal myself to them.”
22 Judas, not Iscariot, saith to him, And how is it, Lord, that thou art going to manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?
Judas (not Iscariot) responded, “Lord, why would you reveal yourself to us and not to the world?”
23 Jesus answered and said to him, If any one loveth me, he will keep my word; and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our abode with him.
Jesus replied, “Those who love me will do as I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with them.
24 He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words; and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's who sent me.
Those who don't love me don't do what I say. These words don't come from me, they come from the Father who sent me.
25 These things have I spoken to you, while abiding with you;
I'm explaining this to you while I'm still here with you.
26 but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit which the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things which I have said to you.
But when the Father sends the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, in my place, he will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you.
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world giveth, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid.
Peace I leave you; my peace I'm giving you. The peace I give you is nothing like what the world gives. Don't let your minds be anxious, and don't be afraid.
28 Ye heard me say to you, I am going away, and am coming again to you. If ye loved me, ye would have rejoiced that I go to the Father; for the Father is greater than I.
You've heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, but I will come back to you.’ If you really loved me, you would be happy because I'm going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you before it hath come to pass, that when it hath come to pass ye may believe.
I've explained this to you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will be convinced.
30 I shall not talk much more with you. For the prince of the world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
I can't talk to you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no power to control me,
31 But [[this must be]] that the world may know that I love the Father, and that as the Father gave me commandment so I do. Arise, let us go hence.
but I'm doing what my Father told me to do so that the world will know that I love the Father. Now get up. Let's go.”
