Job 5
1 Call now, see if any will answer thee! And to which of the holy ones wilt thou look?
Kiálts csak, van-e, ki felel neked, s kihez fordulnál a szentek közül?
2 Verily grief destroyeth the fool, And wrath consumeth the weak man.
Mert az oktalant megöli a bosszúság, s az együgyűre halált hoz a vakbuzgalom.
3 I have seen an impious man taking root, But soon I cursed his habitation.
Én láttam az oktalant meggyökeredzeni, és rögtön megátkoztam hajlékát.
4 His children are far from safety; They are oppressed at the gate, and there is none to deliver them.
Távol esnek gyermekei a segítségtől, összezúzatnak a kapuban és nincs mentő.
5 His harvest the hungry devour, Carrying it even through the thorns; And a snare gapeth after his substance.
A kinek aratását megeszi az éhező, tövisek közül is elveszi, és áhítja vagyonukat a hurok.
6 For affliction cometh not from the dust, Nor doth trouble spring up from the ground;
Mert nem a porból nő ki a baj, s nem a földből sarjad a szenvedés;
7 Behold, man is born to trouble, As the sparks fly upward.
hanem az ember szenvedésre született, a mint a villám fiai magasba repülnek.
8 I would look to God, And to God would I commit my cause,
Azonban én Istenhez fordulnék, és az Istenhez intézném ügyemet.
9 Who doeth great things and unsearchable; Yea, marvellous things without number;
A ki nagyokat tesz, kikutathatatlanul, csodásokat, úgy hogy számuk sincsen.
10 Who giveth rain upon the earth, And sendeth water upon the fields;
A ki esőt ad a földnek színére s vizet küld a térségek szinére,
11 Who placeth the lowly in high places, And restoreth the afflicted to prosperity;
hogy az alacsonyokat magasra tegye, s a búsulók segítségre emelkednek.
12 Who disappointeth the devices of the crafty, So that their hands cannot perform their enterprises;
Megbontja a ravaszok gondolatait, s nem végeznek kezeik olyat, a mi valódiság.
13 Who taketh the wise in their own craftiness, And bringeth to nought the counsel of the artful.
Megfogja a bölcseket ravaszságukban, s a ferdék tanácsa elhamarkodott;
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime; They grope at noon as if it were night.
nappal sötétségre találnak, és mint éjjel tapogatóznak délben.
15 So he saveth the persecuted from their mouth; The oppressed from the hand of the mighty.
Így megsegíti a kardtól, szájuktól, és az erősnek kezétől a szűkölködőt;
16 So the poor hath hope, And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
s lett remény a szegény számára, és a jogtalanság elzárta száját.
17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.
Íme boldog a halandó, kit Isten megfenyít, s a Mindenható oktatását meg ne vesd;
18 For he bruiseth, and bindeth up; He woundeth, and his hands make whole.
mert ő fájdít és bekötöz, sebet üt és kezei gyógyítanak.
19 In six troubles will he deliver thee; Yea, in seven shall no evil touch thee.
Hat szorongatásban megment és hétben nem ér téged baj:
20 In famine he will redeem thee from death, And in war from the power of the sword.
Éhségben megváltott a haláltól s háborúban kard hatalmától;
21 Thou shalt be safe from the scourge of the tongue, And shalt not be afraid of destruction, when it cometh.
a nyelv ostora elől rejtve vagy s nem félsz pusztítástól, midőn jön;
22 At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh, And of the wild beasts of the land shalt thou not be afraid.
pusztításon s éhínségen nevetsz, s a föld vadjától nem kell félned,
23 For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; Yea, the beasts of the forest shall be at peace with thee.
mert a mező köveivel van szövetséged s a mező vadja békére állott veled.
24 Thou shalt find that thy tent is in peace; Thou shalt visit thy dwelling, and not be disappointed.
Megtudod, hogy béke a te sátorod; vizsgálod hajlékodat és nincs vétked;
25 Thou shalt see thy descendants numerous, And thine offspring as the grass of the earth.
tudod, hogy sok a magzatod és sarjaid akár a földnek füve.
26 Thou shalt come to thy grave in full age, As a shock of corn gathered in its season.
Erő teljében jutsz el sírhoz, a mint fölmén az asztag a maga idején.
27 Lo! this we have searched out; so it is: Hear it, and lay it up in thy mind!
Íme, ez az, a mit kikutattunk, így van, hallgass rá és ismerd meg te!
