Job 28
1 Truly there is a vein for silver, And a place for gold, which men refine.
Certamente há minas para a prata, e o ouro lugar onde o derretem.
2 Iron is obtained from earth, And stone is melted into copper.
O ferro é tirado do solo, e da pedra se funde o cobre.
3 Man putteth an end to darkness; He searcheth to the lowest depths For the stone of darkness and the shadow of death.
O [homem] põe fim às trevas, e investiga em toda extremidade, as pedras que estão na escuridão e nas mais sombrias trevas.
4 From the place where they dwell they open a shaft; Forgotten by the feet, They hang down, they swing away from men.
Abre um poço onde não há morador, lugares esquecidos por quem passa a pé; pendurados longe da humanidade, vão de um lado para o outro.
5 The earth, out of which cometh bread, Is torn up underneath, as it were by fire.
Da terra o pão procede, e por debaixo ela é transformada como que pelo fogo.
6 Her stones are the place of sapphires, And she hath clods of gold for man.
Suas pedras são o lugar da safira, e contém pó de ouro.
7 The path thereto no bird knoweth, And the vulture's eye hath not seen it;
A ave de rapina não conhece essa vereda; os olhos do falcão não a viram.
8 The fierce wild beast hath not trodden it; The lion hath not passed over it.
Os filhotes de animais ferozes nunca a pisaram, nem o feroz leão passou por ela.
9 Man layeth his hand upon the rock; He upturneth mountains from their roots;
[O homem] põe sua mão no rochedo, e revolve os montes desde a raiz.
10 He cleaveth out streams in the rocks, And his eye seeth every precious thing;
Cortou canais pelas rochas, e seus olhos veem tudo o que é precioso.
11 He bindeth up the streams, that they trickle not, And bringeth hidden things to light.
Ele tapa os rios desde suas nascentes, e faz o oculto sair para a luz.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
Porém onde se achará a sabedoria? E onde está o lugar da inteligência?
13 Man knoweth not the price thereof, Nor can it be found in the land of the living.
O ser humano não conhece o valor dela, nem ela é achada na terra dos viventes.
14 The deep saith, It is not in me; And the sea saith, It is not with me.
O abismo diz: Não está em mim; E o mar diz: Nem comigo.
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, Nor shall silver be weighed out as the price thereof.
Nem por ouro fino se pode comprar, nem se pesar em troca de prata.
16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, With the precious onyx or the sapphire.
Não pode ser avaliada com ouro de Ofir, nem com ônix precioso, nem com safira.
17 Gold and crystal are not to be compared with it; Nor can it be purchased with jewels of fine gold.
Não se pode comparar com ela o ouro, nem o cristal; nem se pode trocar por joia de ouro fino.
18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; For wisdom is more precious than pearls.
De coral nem de quartzo não se fará menção; porque o preço da sabedoria é melhor que o de rubis.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be purchased with pure gold.
O topázio de Cuxe não se pode comparar com ela; nem pode ser avaliada com o puro ouro fino.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?
De onde, pois, vem a sabedoria? E onde está o lugar da inteligência?
21 Since it is hidden from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the fowls of the air.
Porque encoberta está aos olhos de todo vivente, e é oculta a toda ave do céu.
22 Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.
O perdição e a morte dizem: Com nossos ouvidos ouvimos sua fama.
23 God knoweth the way to it; He knoweth its dwelling-place.
Deus entende o caminho dela, e ele conhece seu lugar.
24 For he seeth to the ends of the earth, And surveyeth all things under the whole heaven.
Porque ele enxerga até os confins da terra, e vê tudo [o que há] debaixo de céus.
25 When he gave the winds their weight, And meted out the waters by measure;
Quando ele deu peso ao vento, e estabeleceu medida para as águas;
26 When he prescribed a law to the rain, And a path to the thunder-flash, —
Quando ele fez lei para a chuva, e caminho para o relâmpago dos trovões,
27 Then did he see it, and make it known; He established it, and searched it out.
Então ele a viu, e relatou; preparou-a, e também a examinou.
28 But he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.
E disse ao homem: Eis que o temor ao Senhor é a sabedoria, e o desviar-se do mal [é] a inteligência.
