Job 28
1 Truly there is a vein for silver, And a place for gold, which men refine.
Il y a pour l'argent un lieu d'où on l'extrait, pour l'or un lieu où on l'épure.
2 Iron is obtained from earth, And stone is melted into copper.
Le fer se tire de la terre, et la pierre fondue donne le cuivre.
3 Man putteth an end to darkness; He searcheth to the lowest depths For the stone of darkness and the shadow of death.
L'homme met fin aux ténèbres, il explore, jusqu'au fond des abîmes, la pierre cachée dans les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort.
4 From the place where they dwell they open a shaft; Forgotten by the feet, They hang down, they swing away from men.
Il creuse, loin des lieux habités, des galeries, qu'ignore le pied des vivants; suspendu, il vacille, loin des humains.
5 The earth, out of which cometh bread, Is torn up underneath, as it were by fire.
La terre, d'où sort le pain, est bouleversée dans ses entrailles comme par le feu.
6 Her stones are the place of sapphires, And she hath clods of gold for man.
Ses roches sont le lieu du saphir, et l'on y trouve de la poudre d'or.
7 The path thereto no bird knoweth, And the vulture's eye hath not seen it;
L'oiseau de proie n'en connaît pas le sentier, l'œil du vautour ne l'a point aperçu.
8 The fierce wild beast hath not trodden it; The lion hath not passed over it.
Les animaux sauvages ne l'ont point foulé, le lion n'y a jamais passé.
9 Man layeth his hand upon the rock; He upturneth mountains from their roots;
L'homme porte sa main sur le granit, il ébranle les montagnes dans leurs racines.
10 He cleaveth out streams in the rocks, And his eye seeth every precious thing;
Il perce des galeries dans les rochers; rien de précieux n'échappe à son regard.
11 He bindeth up the streams, that they trickle not, And bringeth hidden things to light.
Il sait arrêter le suintement des eaux, il amène à la lumière tout ce qui était caché.
12 But where shall wisdom be found? And where is the place of understanding?
Mais la Sagesse, où la trouver? Où est le lieu de l'Intelligence?
13 Man knoweth not the price thereof, Nor can it be found in the land of the living.
L'homme n'en connaît pas le prix, on ne la rencontre pas sur la terre des vivants.
14 The deep saith, It is not in me; And the sea saith, It is not with me.
L'abîme dit: « Elle n'est pas dans mon sein; » la mer dit: « Elle n'est pas avec moi. »
15 It cannot be gotten for gold, Nor shall silver be weighed out as the price thereof.
Elle ne se donne pas contre de l'or pur, elle ne s'achète pas au poids de l'argent.
16 It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir, With the precious onyx or the sapphire.
On ne la met pas en balance avec de l'or d'Ophir, avec l'onyx précieux et avec le saphir.
17 Gold and crystal are not to be compared with it; Nor can it be purchased with jewels of fine gold.
L'or et le verre ne peuvent lui être comparés, on ne l'échange pas pour un vase d'or fin.
18 No mention shall be made of coral or of crystal; For wisdom is more precious than pearls.
Qu'on ne fasse pas mention du corail et du cristal: la possession de la sagesse vaut mieux que les perles.
19 The topaz of Ethiopia cannot equal it, Nor can it be purchased with pure gold.
La topaze d'Ethiopie ne l'égale pas, et l'or pur n'atteint pas sa valeur.
20 Whence then cometh wisdom? And where is the place of understanding?
D'où vient donc la sagesse? Où est lieu de l'Intelligence?
21 Since it is hidden from the eyes of all living, And kept close from the fowls of the air.
Elle est cachée aux yeux de tous les vivants, elle se dérobe aux oiseaux du ciel.
22 Destruction and Death say, We have heard a rumor of it with our ears.
L'enfer et la mort disent: « Nous en avons entendu parler. » (questioned)
23 God knoweth the way to it; He knoweth its dwelling-place.
C'est Dieu qui connaît son chemin, c'est lui qui sait où elle réside.
24 For he seeth to the ends of the earth, And surveyeth all things under the whole heaven.
Car il voit jusqu'aux extrémités de la terre, il aperçoit tout ce qui est sous le ciel.
25 When he gave the winds their weight, And meted out the waters by measure;
Quand il réglait le poids des vents, qu'il mettait les eaux dans la balance,
26 When he prescribed a law to the rain, And a path to the thunder-flash, —
quand il donnait des lois à la pluie, qu'il traçait la route aux éclairs de la foudre,
27 Then did he see it, and make it known; He established it, and searched it out.
alors il l'a vue et l'a décrite, il l'a établie et en a sondé les secrets.
28 But he said unto man, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, And to depart from evil is understanding.
Puis il a dit à l'homme: La crainte du Seigneur, voilà la sagesse; fuir le mal, voilà l'intelligence.
