Job 1
1 In the land of Uz lived a man whose name was Job. He was an upright and good man, fearing God and departing from evil.
Uusin maassa oli mies, jonka nimi oli Job. Tämä mies oli nuhteeton ja rehellinen, pelkäsi Jumalaa ja karttoi pahaa.
2 He had seven sons and three daughters.
Hänelle syntyi seitsemän poikaa ja kolme tytärtä.
3 His substance was seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a great number of servants; so that he was the greatest of all the inhabitants of the East.
Ja karjaa hänellä oli seitsemäntuhatta lammasta, kolmetuhatta kamelia, viisisataa härkäparia ja viisisataa aasintammaa sekä ylen paljon palvelijoita. Tämä mies oli kaikista Idän miehistä mahtavin.
4 Now it was the custom of his sons to make a feast in their houses, each on his day, and to send and invite their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
Hänen pojillansa oli tapana laittaa pitoja, kullakin oli pidot talossaan vuoropäivänänsä; he lähettivät silloin sanan ja kutsuivat kolme sisartansa syömään ja juomaan kanssansa.
5 And when the days of their feasting had gone round, Job used to send for them and sanctify them, and to rise up early in the morning and offer burnt-offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and have renounced God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
Mutta kun pitopäivät olivat kiertonsa kiertäneet, lähetti Job sanan ja pyhitti heidät; hän nousi varhain aamulla ja uhrasi polttouhreja, yhtä monta kuin heitä oli. Sillä Job ajatteli: "Ehkä poikani ovat tehneet syntiä ja sydämessään luopuneet Jumalasta". Näin Job teki aina.
6 Now on a certain day the sons of God came to present themselves before Jehovah, and Satan also came among them.
Mutta kun eräänä päivänä Jumalan pojat tulivat ja asettuivat Herran eteen, tuli myöskin saatana heidän joukossansa.
7 And Jehovah said to Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered Jehovah, and said, From wandering over the earth, and walking up and down in it.
Niin Herra kysyi saatanalta: "Mistä sinä tulet?" Saatana vastasi Herralle ja sanoi: "Maata kiertämästä ja siellä kuljeksimasta".
8 And Jehovah said to Satan, Hast thou observed my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, an upright and good man, fearing God and departing from evil?
Niin Herra sanoi saatanalle: "Oletko pannut merkille palvelijaani Jobia? Sillä ei ole maan päällä hänen vertaistansa; hän on nuhteeton ja rehellinen mies, pelkää Jumalaa ja karttaa pahaa."
9 Then Satan answered Jehovah, Is it for nought that Job feareth God?
Saatana vastasi Herralle ja sanoi: "Suottako Job pelkää Jumalaa?
10 Hast thou not placed a hedge around him, and around his house, and around all his possessions? Thou hast prospered the work of his hands, and his herds are greatly increased in the land.
Olethan itse kaikilta puolin suojannut hänet, hänen talonsa ja kaiken, mitä hänellä on; olet siunannut hänen kättensä työn, ja hänen karjalaumansa ovat levinneet ympäri maata.
11 But only put forth thy hand, and touch whatever he possesseth, and to thy face will he renounce thee.
Mutta ojennapa kätesi ja koske kaikkeen, mitä hänellä on: varmaan hän kiroaa sinua vasten kasvojasi."
12 And Jehovah said to Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; but upon him lay not thy hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah.
Niin Herra sanoi saatanalle: "Katso, kaikki, mitä hänellä on, olkoon sinun käsissäsi; älä vain koske kädelläsi häneen itseensä". Ja saatana meni pois Herran edestä.
13 Now on a certain day the sons and daughters of Job were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,
Kun sitten eräänä päivänä hänen poikansa ja tyttärensä söivät ja joivat viiniä vanhimman veljensä talossa,
14 when a messenger came to Job, and said, The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them,
tuli sanansaattaja Jobin luo ja sanoi: "Raavailla kynnettiin, ja aasintammat kävivät niiden vieressä laitumella;
15 and the Sabaeans fell upon them, and took them away; the servants also they slew with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
niin sabalaiset hyökkäsivät ja ryöstivät ne ja surmasivat palvelijat miekan terällä. Vain minä yksin pelastuin kertomaan tämän sinulle."
16 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God hath fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
Hänen vielä puhuessaan tuli toinen ja sanoi: "Jumalan tuli iski alas taivaasta, sytytti palamaan lampaat ja palvelijat ja kulutti heidät. Vain minä yksin pelastuin kertomaan tämän sinulle."
17 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldaeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and carried them away; the servants also they slew with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
Hänen vielä puhuessaan tuli taas toinen ja sanoi: "Kaldealaiset asettuivat kolmeen joukkoon ja karkasivat kamelien kimppuun, ryöstivät ne ja surmasivat palvelijat miekan terällä. Vain minä yksin pelastuin kertomaan tämän sinulle."
18 While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;
Hänen vielä puhuessaan tuli taas toinen ja sanoi: "Poikasi ja tyttäresi söivät ja joivat viiniä vanhimman veljensä talossa;
19 and, lo! there came a great wind from the desert, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
katso, silloin suuri tuulispää tuli tuolta puolen erämaan ja iski talon neljään nurkkaan, ja se luhistui nuorukaisten päälle, niin että he kuolivat. Vain minä yksin pelastuin kertomaan tämän sinulle."
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;
Silloin Job nousi, repäisi viittansa ja leikkasi hiuksensa, heittäytyi maahan ja rukoili.
21 and said, Naked came I forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither. Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah!
Ja hän sanoi: "Alastonna minä tulin äitini kohdusta, ja alastonna minä sinne palajan. Herra antoi, ja Herra otti; kiitetty olkoon Herran nimi."
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor uttered vain words against God.
Kaikessa tässä Job ei tehnyt syntiä eikä puhunut nurjasti Jumalaa vastaan.
