Jeremiah 19
1 Thus saith Jehovah: Go and buy an earthen bottle of the potter, And take with thee the elders of the people, And the elders of the priests,
Jahweh sprak: Ge moet met enige oudsten van het volk en der priesters een aarden kruik kopen,
2 And go forth to the valley of the son of Hinnom, At the entrance of the pottery-gate, And proclaim there the words Which I shall speak to thee.
naar het Ben-Hinnom-dal gaan tegenover de Schervenpoort, en daar de woorden verkondigen, die Ik tot u ga spreken.
3 Say, Hear the word of Jehovah, Ye kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem! Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am about to bring such an evil upon this place, That whoever heareth of it, his ears shall tingle.
Ge moet hun zeggen: Hoort het woord van Jahweh, koningen van Juda en bewoners van Jerusalem! Zo spreekt Jahweh der heirscharen, Israëls God! Zie, Ik ga rampen brengen over deze plaats, waarvan de oren tuiten van iedereen die het hoort.
4 For they have forsaken me, And have alienated this place, And have burned incense in it to strange gods, Which neither they, nor their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known, And have filled this place with the blood of innocent children,
Want ze hebben Mij verlaten, deze plaats van Mij vervreemd, en daar wierook gebrand voor vreemde goden, die zijzelf, noch hun vaderen, noch Juda’s koningen hebben gekend. Zij hebben deze plaats met het bloed van onschuldigen gedrenkt,
5 And have built high places to Baal, To burn their sons in the fire for burnt-offerings to Baal; Which I ordained not, and commanded not, And which never came into my mind.
en offerhoogten voor Báal gebouwd, om hun zonen en dochters als offer voor Báal te verbranden; wat Ik toch zeker niet heb geboden, en wat Mij nooit in de gedachte is gekomen.
6 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, saith Jehovah, When this place shall no more be called Tophet, Nor the valley of the son of Hinnom, But the valley of Slaughter.
Daarom zullen de dagen komen, spreekt Jahweh, dat men deze plaats niet meer Tófet zal noemen en Ben-Hinnom-dal, maar "Moord-dal".
7 For I will in this place bring to naught the plans of Judah and Jerusalem, And I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies, And by the hands of them that seek their lives; And their dead bodies will I give for food To the birds of heaven and the beasts of the earth.
Want Ik zal Juda en Jerusalem radeloos maken op deze plaats, ze voor hun vijanden doen vallen door het zwaard en door de hand van hen, die hun naar het leven staan, en hun lijken tot aas werpen voor de vogels uit de lucht en voor de beesten op aarde.
8 And I will make this city a wonder and a hissing; Every one that passeth by it shall wonder and hiss, On account of all its plagues.
Ik zal van deze stad een wildernis maken en een bespotting; wie er voorbijgaat, verstart, en zal met haar plagen gaan spotten.
9 For I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and of their daughters, Yea, the flesh of each other shall they eat, In the straitness and the distress With which their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall press them.
Ik zal ze het vlees van hun zonen en dochters doen eten; ze zullen elkanders vlees verslinden in de nood en benauwdheid, waarin hun vijanden, en die hun naar het leven staan, hen zullen brengen.
10 Then break thou the bottle Before the eyes of the men that go with thee.
Daarna moet ge de kruik verbrijzelen voor de ogen der mannen, die met u mee zijn gegaan,
11 And say to them: Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: So will I break this people and this city, As one breaks a potter's vessel which cannot be made whole again; And they shall be buried in Tophet, till there is no room to bury.
en tot hen zeggen: Zo spreekt Jahweh der heirscharen! Ik zal het volk en deze stad verbrijzelen, zoals men een aarden pot verbrijzelt, die men niet meer kan maken. In de Tófet zal men begraven bij gebrek aan plaats.
12 Thus will I do to this place and to its inhabitants, saith Jehovah, And I will make this city itself like Tophet;
Zo zal Ik ook deze plaats en haar bewoners behandelen, is de godsspraak van Jahweh, en van deze stad een Tófet maken.
13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah shall be unclean, like the place of Tophet, All the houses upon whose roofs they have burned incense to all the host of heaven, And poured out drink-offerings to strange gods.
En Jerusalems huizen en de paleizen van Juda’s koningen zullen even onrein zijn als de plaats van de Tófet: al die huizen, waar men op het dak wierook gebrand heeft voor heel het heir aan de hemel, en plengoffers voor vreemde goden heeft gebracht.
14 Then came Jeremiah from Tophet, Whither Jehovah had sent him to prophesy, And stood in the court of the house of Jehovah, And said to all the people:
Daarna ging Jeremias weg van de Tófet, waar Jahweh hem had heengezonden om te profeteren. Hij ging in de voorhof staan van het huis van Jahweh, en zeide nu tot heel het volk:
15 Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I am about to bring upon this city, and upon all the cities belonging to it, All the evil which I have pronounced against it; For they have made their necks stiff, And refused to hearken to my words.
Zo spreekt Jahweh der heirscharen, Israëls God! Zie, Ik ga over deze stad en alle omliggende steden al de rampen brengen, waarmee Ik ze heb bedreigd; want ze blijven hardnekkig, en luisteren niet naar mijn woorden!
