James 1
1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
Jacques, serviteur de Dieu et du Seigneur Jésus-Christ, aux douze tribus qui sont dans la Dispersion: Salutations.
2 Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into various temptations;
Réjouissez-vous, mes frères, lorsque vous tombez dans diverses tentations,
3 knowing that the trying of your faith worketh endurance.
sachant que l'épreuve de votre foi produit l'endurance.
4 But let endurance have a perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting in nothing.
Que l'endurance fasse son œuvre parfaite, afin que vous soyez parfaits et complets, ne manquant de rien.
5 But if any one of you is wanting in wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally, and upbraideth not; and it will be given him.
Mais si quelqu'un d'entre vous manque de sagesse, qu'il la demande à Dieu, qui donne à tous libéralement et sans reproche, et elle lui sera donnée.
6 But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting; for he that doubteth is like a wave of the sea driven by the wind and tossed.
Mais qu'il demande avec foi, sans douter, car celui qui doute est semblable à une vague de la mer, poussée par le vent et agitée.
7 For let not that man think that he shall receive anything from the Lord,
Car cet homme ne doit pas penser qu'il recevra quelque chose du Seigneur.
8 a double-minded man as he is, unstable in all his ways.
C'est un homme à double pensée, instable dans toutes ses voies.
9 Let the brother of low degree glory in that he is exalted;
Que le frère dans l'humilité se glorifie de sa haute situation;
10 but the rich, in that he is made low; because as the flower of the grass he will pass away.
et le riche, de ce qu'il est rendu humble, car, comme la fleur dans l'herbe, il passera.
11 For the sun rose with its burning heat, and withered the grass, and its flower fell off, and the beauty of its appearance perished; so also will the rich man fade away in his ways.
Car le soleil se lève avec un vent brûlant et flétrit l'herbe; la fleur qu'elle contient tombe, et la beauté de son aspect périt. Ainsi, l'homme riche se fanera aussi dans ses occupations.
12 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation; for when he is approved, he will receive the crown of life, which He promised to them that love him.
Heureux celui qui supporte la tentation, car, après avoir été agréé, il recevra la couronne de vie que le Seigneur a promise à ceux qui l'aiment.
13 Let no one when he is tempted, say, I am tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he tempteth no one.
Que personne ne dise, quand il est tenté: « Je suis tenté par Dieu », car Dieu ne peut être tenté par le mal, et lui-même ne tente personne.
14 But each one is tempted when by his own lust he is led away and enticed;
Mais chacun est tenté quand il est attiré par sa propre convoitise et séduit.
15 then lust, having conceived, bringeth forth sin, and sin, when completed, bringeth forth death.
Alors la convoitise, quand elle a conçu, engendre le péché. Et le péché, quand il est devenu adulte, produit la mort.
16 Do not err, my beloved brethren.
Ne vous y trompez pas, mes frères bien-aimés.
17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the lights, with whom is no change, nor shadow from turning.
Tout don agréable et tout don parfait viennent d'en haut, du Père des lumières, chez qui il n'y a ni variation ni ombre portée.
18 Of his own will he begot us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.
De sa propre volonté, il nous a engendrés par la parole de la vérité, afin que nous soyons une sorte de prémices de ses créatures.
19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.
Ainsi donc, mes frères bien-aimés, que chacun soit prompt à entendre, lent à parler, et lent à se mettre en colère;
20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
car la colère de l'homme ne produit pas la justice de Dieu.
21 Wherefore put off all filthiness, and excess of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
C'est pourquoi, rejetant toute souillure et tout débordement de méchanceté, recevez avec humilité la parole implantée, qui peut sauver vos âmes.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
Mais mettez la parole en pratique, et ne vous contentez pas d'écouter, en vous trompant vous-mêmes.
23 For if any one is a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like a man beholding his natural face in a glass;
Car si quelqu'un écoute la parole et ne la met pas en pratique, il est semblable à un homme qui regarde son visage naturel dans un miroir;
24 for he beholds himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what manner of man he was.
car il se voit lui-même, et s'en va, et aussitôt il oublie quelle sorte d'homme il était.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty, and remains there, being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in his deed.
Mais celui qui regarde la loi parfaite de la liberté et qui persévère, n'étant pas un auditeur qui oublie, mais un exécutant, celui-là sera béni dans ce qu'il fera.
26 If any one thinks that he is religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.
Si quelqu'un parmi vous se croit religieux alors qu'il ne tient pas sa langue en bride, mais trompe son cœur, la religion de cet homme est sans valeur.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God, the Father, is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep one's self unspotted from the world.
Voici ce qu'est une religion pure et sans tache devant notre Dieu et Père: visiter les orphelins et les veuves dans leur détresse, et se garder des souillures du monde.
