James 4
1 Whence are wars and whence are fightings among you? Are they not hence, from your lusts that war in your members?
| היודעים אתם מי גורם לכל המריבות והמלחמות ביניכם? היצר הרע שלכם! |
2 Ye lust, and have not; ye kill, and earnestly covet, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war. Ye have not, because ye ask not;
| אתם מוכנים אפילו לרצוח כדי להשיג את מה שאין לכם. אתם מקנאים במה שיש לאחרים, ומשום שאינכם יכולים להשיג זאת בעצמכם, אתם נלחמים כדי לחטוף ולקחת מהם! אך למעשה אין לכם, כיוון שלא ביקשתם מאלוהים! |
3 ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
| גם אם אתם מבקשים אינכם מקבלים, כי מניעיכם אינם טהורים; אתם מבקשים רק כדי למלא את תאוותכם. |
4 Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore chooseth to be a friend of the world, becometh an enemy of God.
| נואפים שכמוכם! האם אתם לא מבינים שידידות עם העולם היא עוינות לאלוהים? אומר זאת שוב: אם ברצונכם להתיידד עם העולם, בכך אתם עושים את עצמכם אויבים לאלוהים. |
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, “Zealously doth the Spirit, which made its abode in us, long for us”?
| וזאת מפני שהכתובים מלמדים אותנו כי רוח הקודש, שהשכין ה׳ בתוכנו, שומר עלינו בקנאה. |
6 but he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.”
| אך הוא גם מעניק לנו כוח רב כדי שנוכל לעמוד בפיתויים ובתאוות, כפי שאומרים הכתובים:”אלוהים מתנגד לגאים ולענוים יתן חן“. |
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God; resist the Devil, and he will flee from you.
| לכן היכנעו לאלוהים, התנגדו לשטן והוא יברח מפניכם. |
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double-minded.
| התקרבו אל אלוהים כדי שגם הוא יתקרב אליכם. רחצו את ידיכם, אתם החוטאים, והניחו לאלוהים לשלוט בחייכם, כדי שיטהר את לבכם מכל רע וימלא אותו באהבה. |
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into heaviness.
| עליכם להוכיח חרטה אמיתית – בדמעות, בסבל ובצער אמיתי; צער במקום צחוק ואבל במקום שמחה. |
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you.
| השפילו את עצמכם לפני האדון, הוא יעזור לכם, ירומם ויעודד אתכם. |
11 Speak not against one another, brethren; he that speaketh against his brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law; but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.
| אחים יקרים, אל תמתחו ביקורת איש על רעהו, אל תרכלו ואל תוציאו דיבה, שכן בעשותכם זאת אתם עוברים על תורת ה׳ שמצוָוה עלינו לאהוב איש את רעהו. אתם מחליטים לעצמכם מה נכון ומה לא נכון, וכך מורדים בדבר ה׳, בעוד שתפקידנו אינו לשפוט את התורה אלא לקיים אותה! |
12 One is the Lawgiver and Judge, he who is able to save, and to destroy; but who art thou, that judgest thy neighbor?
| רק מי שנתן את התורה רשאי לשפוט בינינו, והוא בלבד מחליט אם להציל או לאבד אותנו. אבל איזו רשות יש לכם למתוח ביקורת על אחרים? |
13 Come now, ye that say, To-day and to-morrow we will go into such a city, and spend a year there and traffic, and get gain,
| אני פונה אל אלה מכם שאומרים:”מחר נלך לעיר פלונית, נישאר שם שנה, נפתח עסק ונרוויח כסף.“ |
14 (whereas ye know not what will be on the morrow; for what is your life? Ye are even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away; )
| מאין לכם לדעת מה יקרה מחר? הרי אינכם יודעים כמה זמן נותר לכם לחיות! חייכם דומים למסך עשן: רגע אחד אתם רואים אותו ורגע שני הוא נעלם. |
15 instead of saying, If the Lord will, we shall both live and do this or that;
| עליכם לומר:”אם ירצה השם, נחיה ונעשה דבר זה או אחר.“ |
16 but now ye glory in your boastings. All such glorying is evil.
| אם אינכם נוהגים כך הרי שאתם מתפארים בתוכניותיכם, וביטחון עצמי כזה אינו מוצא־חן בעיני אלוהים. |
17 Therefore to him that knoweth how to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
| אל תשכחו שאם אתם יודעים מה עליכם לעשות, ובכל זאת אינכם עושים זאת, אתם חוטאים. |
