Isaiah 36
1 In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came up against all the fortified cities of Judah, and took them.
Im vierzehnten Jahr aber des Königs Hiskia zog Sanherib, der König von Assyrien, wider alle festen Städte Judas heran und nahm sie ein.
2 And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem, with a great army, against King Hezekiah, and he halted at the aqueduct of the upper pool, in the highway to the fuller's field.
Da sandte der König von Assyrien den Rabsake von Lachis aus nach Jerusalem zum König Hiskia mit starker Heeresmacht; der nahm Aufstellung an der Wasserleitung des oberen Teichs, an der Straße zum Walkerfelde.
3 Then came forth to him Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, who was over the palace, and Shebna the scribe, and Josh, the son of Asaph, the annalist.
Da gingen Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, der dem Palaste vorstand, und Sebna, der Staatsschreiber, und Joah, der Sohn Asaphs, der Kanzler, zu ihm hinaus.
4 And Rabshakeh said to them, Say ye to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria: What a confidence is this which thou cherishest!
Der Rabsake aber sprach zu ihnen: Sagt Hiskia: So spricht der große König, der König von Assyrien: Was bedeutet die stolze Zuversicht, die du da hegst?
5 Thou sayest, (but it is vain talk, ) “I have counsel and strength for war.” In whom, then, dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?
Meinst du etwa, ein bloßes Wort genüge, um den rechten Entschluß und die nötige Macht zum Kriege zu beschaffen? Auf wen verlässest du dich eigentlich, daß du von mir abtrünnig geworden bist?
6 Behold, thou trustest in that broken reed-staff, Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will pierce his hand, and go through it. Such is Pharaoh, king of Egypt, to all that trust in him.
Wohlan, du verlässest dich auf den zerstoßenen Rohrstab da, auf Ägypten, der jedem, der sich auf ihn stützt, in die Hand fährt und sie durchbohrt. So erzeigt sich der Pharao, der König von Ägypten, allen, die sich auf ihn verlassen.
7 But if ye say to me, “We trust in Jehovah, our God,”—is it not he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem to worship before this altar?
Wolltet ihr mir aber antworten: Auf Jahwe, unseren Gott, verlassen wir uns! so ist das ja derselbe, dessen Höhen und Altäre Hiskia abgeschafft hat, indem er Juda und Jerusalem befahl: Vor diesem Altare sollt ihr anbeten!
8 Engage, now, with my master, the king of Assyria! and I will give thee two thousand horses, when thou art able to provide for thyself riders for them.
Nun wohlan, gehe doch mit meinem Herrn, dem Könige von Assyrien, eine Wette ein: ich will dir zweitausend Rosse geben, ob du wohl imstande bist, die nötigen Reiter für sie zu beschaffen?
9 How, then, canst thou resist a single captain, one of the least of the servants of my master? Yet thou trustest in Egypt, on account of her chariots and her horsemen.
Wie Willst du da den Angriff eines einzigen Hauptmanns von den geringsten Dienern meines Herrn zurückschlagen? Und doch verlässest du dich auf Ägypten um der Wagen und Reiter willen?
10 And am I now come up without Jehovah against this land to destroy it? Jehovah hath said to me, “Go up against this land and destroy it!”
Nun, bin ich etwa ohne Jahwes Zustimmung wider dieses Land herangezogen, es zu verheeren? Jahwe selbst hat mir geboten: Ziehe wider dieses Land und verheere es!
11 Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Josh to Rabshakeh: Speak, we beseech thee, to thy servants in the Aramaic language, for we understand it; and speak not to us in the Jewish language, in the hearing of the people that are upon the wall.
Da sprachen Eljakim und Sebna und Joah zum Rabsake: Rede doch mit deinen Knechten aramäisch, denn wir verstehen es, und rede nicht auf judäisch mit uns vor den Ohren der Leute, die auf der Mauer stehen.
12 But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to speak these words to thy master and to thee only, and not to the people who sit upon the wall, to eat their own dung, and to drink their own urine with you?
Der Rabsake aber antwortete: Hat mich etwa mein Herr zu deinem Herrn oder zu dir gesandt, um solches zu verkündigen, und nicht vielmehr zu den Männern, die auf der Mauer sitzen, daß sie samt euch ihren eigenen Kot verzehren und ihren Harn trinken?
13 Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.
Hierauf trat der Rabsake hin und rief mit lauter Stimme auf judäisch und sprach: Vernehmt die Worte des großen Königs, des Königs von Assyrien!
14 Thus saith the king: Let not Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you.
So spricht der König: Laßt euch nicht von Hiskia bethören, denn er vermag euch nicht zu erretten.
15 And let not Hezekiah persuade you to trust in Jehovah, saying, “Jehovah will certainly deliver us. This city shall not be delivered into the hands of the king of Assyria.”
Und laßt euch nicht von Hiskia auf Jahwe vertrösten, wenn er spricht: Jahwe wird uns sicherlich erretten; diese Stadt wird nicht in die Gewalt des Königs von Assyrien überliefert werden!
16 Hearken not to Hezekiah; for thus saith the king of Assyria: Make peace with me, and come out to me; and ye shall every one eat of his own vine, and every one of his own fig-tree, and ye shall every one drink the waters of his own cistern,
Hört nicht auf Hiskia! Denn so spricht der König von Assyrien: Macht Frieden mit mir und übergebt euch mir, so sollt ihr ein jeder von seinem Weinstock und Feigenbaum essen und ein jeder das Wasser seiner Zisterne trinken,
17 until I come, and take you to a land like your own land; a land of corn, and of new wine, a land of bread and of vineyards.
bis ich komme und euch in ein Land hole, das eurem Lande gleicht, ein Land voller Korn und Most, ein Land voller Brotkorn und Weinberge.
18 Be not persuaded by Hezekiah, when he saith, “Jehovah will deliver us.” Have the gods of the nations delivered every one his own land from the hand of the king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hamath and of Arphad?
Laßt euch nur nicht von Hiskia verführen, wenn er spricht: Jahwe wird uns erretten! Haben etwa die Götter der Heiden ein jeglicher sein Land aus der Gewalt des Königs von Assyrien errettet?
19 Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? And did the gods deliver Samaria from my hand?
Wo sind die Götter von Hamath und Arpad, wo sind die Götter von Sepharwaim? Und wo sind die Götter des Landes Samaria? Haben sie etwa Samaria aus meiner Gewalt errettet?
20 Who is there among all the gods of these lands, that hath delivered his land out of my hand, that Jehovah should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?
Wo wären unter allen den Göttern dieser Länder solche, die ihr Land aus meiner Gewalt errettet hätten, daß nun Jahwe Jerusalem aus meiner Gewalt erretten sollte?
21 But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word; for the king's command was, “Answer him not.”
Da schwiegen sie still und antworteten ihm nichts. Denn so lautete der Befehl des Königs: Antwortet ihm nicht!
22 Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the palace, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the annalist, to Hezekiah, with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
Darauf kamen Eljakim, der Sohn Hilkias, der dem Palaste vorstand, und Sebna, der Staatsschreiber, und Joah, der Sohn Asaphs, der Kanzler, mit zerrissenen Kleidern zu Hiskia und berichteten ihm, was der Rabsake gesagt hatte.
