< Hebrews 2 >

1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest haply we let them slip.
atō vayaṁ yad bhramasrōtasā nāpanīyāmahē tadarthamasmābhi ryadyad aśrāvi tasmin manāṁsi nidhātavyāni|
2 For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just retribution,
yatō hētō dūtaiḥ kathitaṁ vākyaṁ yadyamōgham abhavad yadi ca tallaṅghanakāriṇē tasyāgrāhakāya ca sarvvasmai samucitaṁ daṇḍam adīyata,
3 how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first was spoken through the Lord, and was confirmed to us through those who heard him,
tarhyasmābhistādr̥śaṁ mahāparitrāṇam avajñāya kathaṁ rakṣā prāpsyatē, yat prathamataḥ prabhunā prōktaṁ tatō'smān yāvat tasya śrōtr̥bhiḥ sthirīkr̥taṁ,
4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his will?
aparaṁ lakṣaṇairadbhutakarmmabhi rvividhaśaktiprakāśēna nijēcchātaḥ pavitrasyātmanō vibhāgēna ca yad īśvarēṇa pramāṇīkr̥tam abhūt|
5 For not to angels did he put in subjection the world to come, of which we are speaking.
vayaṁ tu yasya bhāvirājyasya kathāṁ kathayāmaḥ, tat tēn divyadūtānām adhīnīkr̥tamiti nahi|
6 But one in a certain place bore testimony, saying, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou carest for him?
kintu kutrāpi kaścit pramāṇam īdr̥śaṁ dattavān, yathā, "kiṁ vastu mānavō yat sa nityaṁ saṁsmaryyatē tvayā| kiṁ vā mānavasantānō yat sa ālōcyatē tvayā|
7 Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honor;
divyadatagaṇēbhyaḥ sa kiñcin nyūnaḥ kr̥tastvayā| tējōgauravarūpēṇa kirīṭēna vibhūṣitaḥ| sr̥ṣṭaṁ yat tē karābhyāṁ sa tatprabhutvē niyōjitaḥ|
8 thou didst put all things in subjection under his feet.” For in that he put all things in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him.
caraṇādhaśca tasyaiva tvayā sarvvaṁ vaśīkr̥taṁ||" tēna sarvvaṁ yasya vaśīkr̥taṁ tasyāvaśībhūtaṁ kimapi nāvaśēṣitaṁ kintvadhunāpi vayaṁ sarvvāṇi tasya vaśībhūtāni na paśyāmaḥ|
9 But we see him who was made a little lower than the angels, Jesus, on account of the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor; that by the grace of God he might taste death for every one.
tathāpi divyadūtagaṇēbhyō yaḥ kiñcin nyūnīkr̥tō'bhavat taṁ yīśuṁ mr̥tyubhōgahētōstējōgauravarūpēṇa kirīṭēna vibhūṣitaṁ paśyāmaḥ, yata īśvarasyānugrahāt sa sarvvēṣāṁ kr̥tē mr̥tyum asvadata|
10 For it became him, for whom are all things, and through whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
aparañca yasmai yēna ca kr̥tsnaṁ vastu sr̥ṣṭaṁ vidyatē bahusantānānāṁ vibhavāyānayanakālē tēṣāṁ paritrāṇāgrasarasya duḥkhabhōgēna siddhīkaraṇamapi tasyōpayuktam abhavat|
11 For both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified are all of one; for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren;
yataḥ pāvakaḥ pūyamānāśca sarvvē ēkasmādēvōtpannā bhavanti, iti hētōḥ sa tān bhrātr̥n vadituṁ na lajjatē|
12 saying, “I will declare thy name to my brethren, in the midst of the congregation will I sing praise to thee.”
tēna sa uktavān, yathā, "dyōtayiṣyāmi tē nāma bhrātr̥ṇāṁ madhyatō mama| parantu samitē rmadhyē kariṣyē tē praśaṁsanaṁ||"
13 And again, “I will put my trust in him;” and again, “Behold, I, and the children which God gave me.”
punarapi, yathā, "tasmin viśvasya sthātāhaṁ|" punarapi, yathā, "paśyāham apatyāni ca dattāni mahyam īśvarāt|"
14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself in like manner shared in the same, that through death he might bring to nought him who had the power of death, that is, the Devil,
tēṣām apatyānāṁ rudhirapalalaviśiṣṭatvāt sō'pi tadvat tadviśiṣṭō'bhūt tasyābhiprāyō'yaṁ yat sa mr̥tyubalādhikāriṇaṁ śayatānaṁ mr̥tyunā balahīnaṁ kuryyāt
15 and might deliver those who, through fear of death, were all their life-time subject to bondage.
yē ca mr̥tyubhayād yāvajjīvanaṁ dāsatvasya nighnā āsan tān uddhārayēt|
16 For surely he doth not help angels, but he helpeth the offspring of Abraham.
sa dūtānām upakārī na bhavati kintvibrāhīmō vaṁśasyaivōpakārī bhavatī|
17 Whence it was right for him to be in all respects made like to his brethren, that he might become a merciful and faithful high-priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
atō hētōḥ sa yathā kr̥pāvān prajānāṁ pāpaśōdhanārtham īśvarōddēśyaviṣayē viśvāsyō mahāyājakō bhavēt tadarthaṁ sarvvaviṣayē svabhrātr̥ṇāṁ sadr̥śībhavanaṁ tasyōcitam āsīt|
18 For in that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
yataḥ sa svayaṁ parīkṣāṁ gatvā yaṁ duḥkhabhōgam avagatastēna parīkṣākrāntān upakarttuṁ śaknōti|
