Hebrews 11
1 Now faith is assurance of things hoped for, a conviction of things not seen.
Or, la foi est une ferme assurance des choses qu'on espère, une démonstration de celles qu'on ne voit pas.
2 For by it the elders obtained a good report.
C'est grâce à elle que les anciens ont obtenu un bon témoignage.
3 Through faith we perceive that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that that which is seen hath not been made out of things which appear. (aiōn g165)
C'est par la foi que nous savons que le monde, a été formé par la parole de Dieu; en sorte que les choses qui se voient ne proviennent pas de choses visibles. (aiōn g165)
4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he received testimony that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and by it though dead he yet speaketh.
C'est par la foi qu'Abel offrit à Dieu un sacrifice meilleur que celui de Caïn. Par elle, il fut déclaré juste. Dieu ayant attesté qu'il agréait ses offrandes; et par elle, quoique mort, il parle encore.
5 By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death; and he was not found, because God translated him; for before his translation he had the testimony that he pleased God.
C'est par la foi qu'Hénoc fut enlevé et qu'il ne vit point la mort; on ne le trouva plus, parce que Dieu l'avait enlevé; car, avant son enlèvement, il avait obtenu le témoignage d'être agréable à Dieu.
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.
Or, sans la foi, il est impossible de lui être agréable; car il faut que celui qui s'approche de Dieu, croie que Dieu existe et qu'il est le rémunérateur de ceux qui le cherchent.
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God of things not yet seen, moved with fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his house; by which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
C'est par la foi que Noé, divinement averti des choses qu'on ne voyait pas encore et pénétré d'une pieuse crainte, bâtit l'arche pour sauver sa famille; par elle, il condamna le monde, et il devint héritier de la justice qui vient de la foi.
8 By faith Abraham, when called, obeyed to go forth to a place which he was afterward to receive for an inheritance, and went forth, not knowing whither he was going.
C'est par la foi qu'Abraham obéit à l'appel de Dieu et partit pour le pays qu'il devait recevoir en héritage: il partit, sans savoir où il allait.
9 By faith he sojourned in the land of the promise, as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;
C'est par la foi qu'il séjourna dans la terre qui lui avait été promise comme dans une terre étrangère, habitant sous des tentes, ainsi qu'Isaac et Jacob, héritiers avec lui de la même promesse.
10 for he was looking for the city which hath foundations, whose maker and builder is God.
Car il attendait la cité qui a de solides fondements, et dont Dieu est l'architecte et le fondateur.
11 Through faith Sarah herself also received power to conceive, even when she was past age, because she accounted him faithful who had promised.
C'est aussi par la foi que Sara fut rendue capable, malgré son âge, d'avoir une postérité, parce qu'elle crut que Celui qui lui en avait fait la promesse était fidèle.
12 Wherefore there sprang even from one, and him become as dead, a race like the stars of heaven in multitude, and like the sand by the seashore which cannot be numbered.
C'est aussi pour cela qu'il est né d'un seul homme, et d'un homme usé par l'âge, une multitude aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel, ou que les grains de sable qui sont au bord de la mer et qu'on ne peut compter.
13 These all died in faith, not having received the promised blessings, but having seen them from afar, and greeted them, and having professed that they were strangers and sojourners on the earth.
Tous ceux-là sont morts dans la foi, sans avoir reçu les choses qui leur avaient été promises; ils les ont seulement vues et saluées de loin, ayant fait profession d'être étrangers et voyageurs sur la terre.
14 For they who say such things show plainly that they are seeking a country.
Ceux qui parlent ainsi montrent bien qu'ils cherchent une patrie.
15 And if indeed they had been mindful of that from which they came out, they would have had opportunity to return;
S'ils avaient songé à celle d'où ils étaient sortis, ils auraient eu le temps d'y retourner,
16 but now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly. Wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for he prepared for them a city.
mais ils désiraient une patrie meilleure, la patrie céleste; aussi Dieu n'a-t-il pas honte de s'appeler leur Dieu, car il leur a préparé une cité.
17 By faith Abraham, when tried, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only-begotten son,
C'est par la foi qu'Abraham, mis à l'épreuve, offrit Isaac. Oui, il offrit son fils unique, lui qui avait reçu les promesses
18 he to whom it was said, “From Isaac shall thine offspring be reckoned;”
et auquel il avait été dit: «C'est en Isaac que tu auras une postérité appelée de ton nom.»
19 accounting that God is able even to raise from the dead; whence also he did figuratively receive him back.
Il se disait que Dieu a le pouvoir même de ressusciter un mort; aussi le recouvra-t-il par une sorte de résurrection.
20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau even concerning things to come.
C'est par la foi qu'Isaac donna à Jacob et à Ésaü une bénédiction qui avait en vue l'avenir.
21 By faith Jacob, when dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff.
C'est par la foi que Jacob mourant bénit chacun des fils de Joseph et adora, appuyé sur le haut de son bâton.
22 By faith Joseph, when dying, made mention of the departure of the sons of Israel, and gave directions concerning his bones.
C'est par la foi que Joseph, près de sa fm, fit mention de la sortie des enfants d'Israël et donna des ordres au sujet de sa dépouille mortelle.
23 By faith Moses, when born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was fair and they feared not the king's commandment.
C'est par la foi que Moïse, à sa naissance, fut caché trois mois par ses parents, parce qu'ils voyaient que c'était un bel enfant; et ils ne se laissèrent pas effrayer par l'édit du roi.
24 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called son of Pharaoh's daughter,
C'est par la foi que Moïse, devenu grand, renonça au titre de fils de la fille de Pharaon,
25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season;
aimant mieux être maltraité avec le peuple de Dieu, que de jouir, pour un peu de temps, des délices du péché:
26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt; for he looked to the recompense of reward.
il considérait l'opprobre du Christ comme une richesse plus grande que les trésors de l'Egypte, parce qu'il regardait à la rémunération.
27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing him who is invisible.
C'est par la foi qu'il quitta l'Egypte, sans craindre la colère du roi; car il tint ferme, comme s'il eût vu celui qui est invisible.
28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of the blood, that he who destroyed the first-born might not touch them.
C'est par la foi qu'il célébra la Pâque et fit l'aspersion du sang, afin que l'exterminateur ne touchât point aux premiers-nés des Israélites.
29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as through dry land; which the Egyptians attempted and were swallowed up.
C'est par la foi qu'ils traversèrent la mer Rouge, comme une terre sèche, tandis que les Égyptiens, qui tentèrent le passage, y furent engloutis.
30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encompassed for seven days.
C'est par la foi que les murailles de Jéricho tombèrent, après qu'on en eut fait le tour pendant sept jours.
31 By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish with those who disobeyed, after having received the spies with peace.
C'est par la foi que Rahab, la femme de mauvaise vie, ne périt pas avec les incrédules, parce qu'elle avait reçu les espions avec bienveillance.
32 And what shall I say more? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, of Barak, and Samson, and Jephthah, of David and Samuel, and the prophets;
Et que dirai-je encore? Car le temps me manquerait, si je voulais parler de Gédéon, de Barac, de Samson, de Jephté, de David, de Samuel et des prophètes,
33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promised blessings, stopped the mouths of lions,
qui, par la foi, ont conquis des royaumes, exercé la justice, obtenu des promesses, fermé la gueule des lions,
34 quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put to flight the armies of the aliens.
éteint l'ardeur du feu, échappé au tranchant de l'épée, triomphé de la maladie, montré leur vaillance à la guerre, mis en fuite des armées ennemies.
35 Women received back their dead by a resurrection; but others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection;
Des femmes ont recouvré leurs morts par la résurrection. D'autres ont été cruellement tourmentés, refusant la délivrance, afin d'obtenir une résurrection meilleure;
36 and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, and also of bonds and imprisonment;
d'autres encore ont eu à subir les moqueries et le fouet, et même les fers et la prison.
37 they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword; they went about in sheep-skins and goat-skins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented,
Ils ont été lapidés, torturés, sciés; ils ont été tués par le tranchant de l'épée. Ils ont erré çà et là, vêtus de peaux de brebis et de peaux de chèvres, dénués de tout, opprimés, maltraités,
38 of whom the world was not worthy; they wandered in deserts and mountains, and caves and the clefts of the earth.
eux dont le monde n'était pas digne; ils ont erré dans les déserts, les montagnes, les cavernes, les antres de la terre.
39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promised blessing,
Et tous ceux-là, bien qu'ayant obtenu un bon témoignage, à cause de leur foi, n'ont point reçu ce qui leur avait été promis.
40 God having provided for us some better thing, that they might not be made perfect without us.
En effet, Dieu avait en vue pour nous quelque chose de meilleur, car il ne voulait pas qu'ils parvinssent à la perfection sans nous.
