< Galatians 2 >

1 Then, fourteen years after, I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, and took Titus also with me.
Deinde post annos quattuordecim, iterum ascendi Ierosolymam cum Barnaba, assumpto et Tito.
2 And I went up by revelation, and communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the gentiles; but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
Ascendi autem secundum revelationem: et contuli cum illis Evangelium, quod prædico in Gentibus, seorsum autem iis, qui videbantur aliquid esse: ne forte in vacuum currerem, aut cucurrissem.
3 But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised;
Sed neque Titus, qui mecum erat, cum esset Gentilis, compulsus est circumcidi:
4 and that because of the false brethren stealthily brought in, who crept in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring into bondage;
sed propter subintroductos falsos fratres, qui subintroierunt explorare libertatem nostram, quam habemus in Christo Iesu, ut nos in servitutem redigerent.
5 to whom not even for an hour did we yield by the required subjection, that the truth of the gospel might still remain with you.
Quibus neque ad horam cessimus subiectione, ut veritas Evangelii permaneat apud vos:
6 But from those who were reputed to be somewhat—whatever they were, it matters not to me, (God accepteth no man's person, ) for to me those in reputation communicated nothing new.
ab iis autem, qui videbantur esse aliquid, (quales aliquando fuerint, nihil mea interest. Deus personam hominis non accipit) mihi enim qui videbantur esse aliquid, nihil contulerunt.
7 But on the contrary, when they saw that I was intrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised, as Peter was with that to the circumcised,
Sed econtra cum vidissent quod creditum est mihi Evangelium præputii, sicut et Petro circumcisionis:
8 (for he who wrought for Peter in behalf of the apostleship to the circumcised, wrought also for me in behalf of the gentiles, )
(qui enim operatus est Petro in Apostolatum circumcisionis, operatus est et mihi inter Gentes)
9 and when they knew the grace that was given to me, James and Cephas and John, who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the gentiles, and they to the circumcised;
et cum cognovissent gratiam, quæ data est mihi, Iacobus, et Cephas, et Ioannes, qui videbantur columnæ esse, dextras dederunt mihi, et Barnabæ societatis: ut nos in Gentes, ipsi autem in circumcisionem:
10 only they wished us to remember the poor; which very thing I also was earnest to do.
tantum ut pauperum memores essemus, quod etiam solicitus fui hoc ipsum facere.
11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I withstood him to the face; for he was condemned.
Cum autem venisset Cephas Antiochiam: in faciem ei restiti, quia reprehensibilis erat.
12 For before certain persons came from James, he used to eat with the gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew, and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
Prius enim quam venirent quidam a Iacobo, cum Gentibus edebat: cum autem venissent, subtrahebat, et segregabat se timens eos, qui ex circumcisione erant.
13 And the other Jews also dissembled with him; so that even Barnabas was carried away with their dissimulation.
Et simulationi eius consenserunt ceteri Iudæi, ita ut et Barnabas duceretur ab eis in illam simulationem.
14 But when I saw that they were not walking uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in the presence of all, If thou, being a Jew, livest after the manner of gentiles, and not that of the Jews, how is it that thou compellest the gentiles to keep the customs of the Jews?
Sed cum vidissem quod non recte ambularent ad veritatem Evangelii, dixi Cephæ coram omnibus: Si tu, cum Iudæus sis, gentiliter vivis, et non Iudaice: quomodo Gentes cogis Iudaizare?
15 We are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the gentiles;
Nos natura Iudæi, et non ex Gentibus peccatores.
16 but knowing that a man is not accepted as righteous by the works of the Law, but by faith in Christ Jesus, we also have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be accepted as righteous by faith in Christ, and not by the works of the Law; for by the works of the Law shall no flesh be accepted as righteous.
Scientes autem quod non iustificatur homo ex operibus legis, nisi per fidem Iesu Christi: et nos in Christo Iesu credimus, ut iustificemur ex fide Christi, et non ex operibus legis: propter quod ex operibus legis non iustificabitur omnis caro.
17 But while seeking to be accepted as righteous in Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is Christ therefore a minister of sin? Far be it!
Quod si quærentes iustificari in Christo, inventi sumus et ipsi peccatores, numquid Christus peccati minister est? Absit.
18 For if I again build up what I pulled down, I make myself a transgressor.
Si enim quæ destruxi, iterum hæc ædifico: prævaricatorem me constituo.
19 For I through the Law died to the Law, that I might live to God.
Ego enim per legem, legi mortuus sum, ut Deo vivam: Christo confixus sum cruci.
20 I have been crucified with Christ, and no longer do I live, but Christ liveth in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Vivo autem, iam non ego: vivit vero in me Christus. Quod autem nunc vivo in carne: in fide vivo filii Dei, qui dilexit me, et tradidit semetipsum pro me.
21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness come through the Law, then did Christ die for nought.
Non abiicio gratiam Dei. Si enim per legem iustitia, ergo gratis Christus mortuus est.
