< Ezekiel 27 >
1 The word of Jehovah came again to me, saying:
Again the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,
2 Son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre,
“Now you, son of man, begin a lamentation concerning Tyre,
3 and say to Tyre, O thou that didst dwell at the entrance of the sea, the merchant of the nations to many coasts! thus saith the Lord Jehovah: O Tyre, thou hast said, “I am perfect in beauty.”
and say to Tyre, who lives within the gates of the sea, merchants of peoples to many islands, the Lord Yahweh says this to you: Tyre, you have said, 'I am perfect in beauty.'
4 Thy borders are in the midst of the seas; thy builders have perfected thy beauty.
Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty.
5 They made all thy ship-boards of cypresses of Senir; they took cedars from Lebanon to make masts for thee.
They have made all your planks with cypress from Mount Hermon; they took cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.
6 Of oaks of Bashan they made thine oars; thy benches they made of ivory inlaid in cedar from the coasts of the Chittaeans.
They made your oars from the oaks of Bashan; they made your decks out of cypress wood from Cyprus, and they overlaid them with ivory.
7 Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which thou didst spread forth to be thy sail; blue and purple from the coasts of Elisha were thy covering.
Your sails were made from colorful linen from Egypt that served as your banner; the colors of blue and purple from the coasts of Elishah are used for the awning on your boat.
8 The inhabitants of Zidon and Arvad were thy rowers; thy wise men, O Tyre, that were in thee, were thy pilots.
Those who were living in Sidon and Arvad were your rowers; the sages of Tyre were within you; they were your pilots.
9 The ancients of Gebal and the skilful men thereof were in thee, thy calkers; all the ships of the sea, with their mariners, were in thee, to traffic in thy merchandise.
Highly experienced craftsmen from Byblos filled your seams; all the ships of the sea and their sailors among you were carrying your merchandise for trade.
10 Persians, and Lydians, and Lybians were in thine army, thy men of war; they hung up the shield and helmet in thee; they set forth thy glory.
Persia, Lydia, and Libya were in your army, your men of war. they hung shield and helmet within you; they showed your splendor.
11 The men of Arvad and thine own army were upon thy walls round about, and brave warriors were in thy towers; they hung their shields upon thy walls round about; they made thy beauty perfect.
The men of Arvad and Helek in your army were on your walls surrounding you, and the people of Gammad were in your towers. They hung up their shields on your walls all around you! They completed your beauty.
12 Tarshish trafficked with thee on account of the abundance of all kinds of goods; with silver, iron, tin, and lead they traded in thy fairs.
Tarshish was a trading partner with you because of your abundant wealth of goods to sell: Silver, iron, tin, and lead. They bought and sold your wares!
13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech trafficked with thee; the persons of men and vessels of brass they sold in thy market.
Javan, Tubal, and Meshech—they traded slaves and in items made of bronze. They handled your merchandise.
14 They of the house of Togarmah traded in thy fairs with horses and horsemen and mules.
Beth Togarmah provided horses, stallions, and mules as your merchandise.
15 The men of Dedan trafficked with thee; many islands were at hand to thee for trade; they brought thee, for payment, horns of ivory, and ebony-wood.
The men of Rhodes were your traders on many coasts. Merchandise was in your hand; they sent back horn, ivory, and ebony as tribute!
16 Syria trafficked with thee by reason of the multitude of the wares of thy making; with carbuncles, purple and embroidered work, and fine linen, and corals, and rubies, they traded in thy fairs.
Aram was a dealer in your many products; they provided emeralds, purple, colored cloth, fine fabric, pearls, and rubies as your merchandise.
17 Judah and the land of Israel trafficked with thee; with wheat of Minnith, and pastry, and syrup, and oil, and balm they traded in thy market.
Judah and the land of Israel were trading with you. They provided wheat from Minnith, cakes, honey, oil, and balsam as your merchandise.
18 Damascus trafficked with thee on account of the multitude of the wares of thy making, on account of the abundance of all kinds of goods, in the wine of Helbon, and in white wool.
Damascus was a trader of all your products, of all your enormous wealth, and of the wine of Helbon and the wool of Zahar.
19 Vedan and Javan brought thread to thy market; wrought iron, cassia, and sweet reed were in thy fairs.
Dan and Javan from Izal provided you with merchandise of wrought iron, cinnamon, and calamus. This became merchandise for you.
20 Dedan brought cloth for riding, in traffic with thee.
Dedan was your dealer in fine saddle blankets.
21 Arabia and all the princes of Kedar were at hand to traffic with thee; they traded with thee in lambs and rams and goats.
Arabia and all the chiefs of Kedar were traders with you; they provided you with lambs, rams and goats.
22 The merchants of Sheba and Raamah trafficked with thee with all kinds of precious spices, and with all kinds of precious stones, and gold.
The traders of Sheba and Raamah came to sell you the best of every spice and in all kinds of precious gems; they traded gold for your merchandise.
23 Haran, and Canneh, and Eden, the merchants of Sheba, Assyria, and Chilmad,
Haran, Kanneh, and Eden were traders with you, along with Sheba, Ashur, and Kilmad.
24 trafficked with thee in splendid apparel, in mantles of blue and embroidered work, in chests of damask bound with cords and made of cedar, in thy market.
These were your dealers in ornate robes of violet cloths with woven colors, and in blankets of multicolored, embroidered, and well-woven cloth in your marketplaces.
25 The ships of Tarshish were the caravans for thy traffic; and thou wast replenished and made very glorious in the midst of the seas.
The ships of Tarshish were the transporters of your merchandise! So you were filled up, heavily laden with cargo in the heart of the seas!
26 Thy rowers have brought thee into great waters; the east wind hath broken thee in the midst of the seas.
Your rowers have brought you into vast seas; the eastern wind has broken you in the middle of them.
27 Thy riches, and thy fairs, and thy merchandise, thy mariners, and thy pilots, thy calkers, and the traders in thy merchandise, and all thy men of war within thee, and all thy multitude that is in the midst of thee, shall fall into the midst of the seas in the day of thy ruin.
Your wealth, merchandise, and trade goods; your sailors and pilots, and ship builders; your traders of merchandise and all the men of war who are in you, and all your crew—they will sink into the depths of the sea on the day of your destruction.
28 At the sound of the cry of thy pilots the pastures around thee shall shake.
Cities at the sea will tremble at the sound of your pilots' cry;
29 And all that handle the oar, the mariners, and all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand upon the land,
All those who handle oars will come down from their ships; mariners and all the pilots on the sea will stand on the land.
30 and shall cause their voice to be heard for thee, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast dust upon their heads, and roll themselves in ashes.
Then they will make you listen to their voice and will wail bitterly; they will cast dust up on their heads. They will roll about in ashes.
31 And they shall make themselves utterly bald for thee, and gird themselves with sackcloth; and they shall weep for thee with bitterness of heart and bitter wailing.
They will shave their heads bald for you and bind themselves with sackcloth, and they will weep bitterly over you and they will cry out.
32 And in their wailing they shall take up for thee a lamentation, and shall lament over thee, saying: “What city is like Tyre, like the Destroyed in the midst of the sea?
They will lift up their wails of lamentation for you and sing dirges over you, Who is like Tyre, who has now been brought to silence in the middle of the sea?
33 When thy wares went forth from the seas, thou didst satisfy many nations; thou didst enrich the kings of the earth with the abundance of thy riches and thy merchandise.
When your merchandise went ashore from the sea, it satisfied many peoples; you enriched the kings of the earth with your great wealth and merchandise!
34 Now thou art broken by the seas in the depth of the waters, and thy merchandise and all thy multitude in the midst of thee are fallen.
But when you were shattered by the seas, by deep waters, your merchandise and all your crew sank!
35 All the inhabitants of the isles are astonished at thee, and their kings shudder; they are troubled in their countenance.
All the inhabitants of the coasts were appalled at you, and their kings shuddered in horror! Their faces trembled!
36 The merchants among the nations hiss at thee. Thou art a desolation, and shalt exist no more forever.”
The merchants of the people hiss at you; you have become a horror, and you will be no more forever.”
