Acts 7
1 And the high-priest said, Are then these things so?
Þá spurði æðsti presturinn hann: „Eru þessar ásakanir sannar?“
2 And he said, Brethren and fathers, hearken. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,
Stefán útskýrði þá mál sitt ýtarlega með þessum orðum: „Áður en Abraham, forfaðir okkar, fluttist frá Mesópótamíu og til Haran, birtist Guð dýrðarinnar honum.
3 and said to him, “Go forth from thy country and thy kindred, and come into the land which I will show thee.”
Hann sagði honum að yfirgefa föðurland sitt, kveðja ættingja sína og leggja af stað til lands sem Guð myndi vísa honum á.
4 Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Haran; and from thence, after his father was dead, he caused him to remove into this land wherein ye now dwell;
Hann yfirgaf því land Kaldea, settist að í Haran í Sýrlandi og bjó þar uns faðir hans dó. Eftir það leiddi Guð hann hingað til Ísraelslands,
5 and he gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on; and he promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his posterity after him, when as yet he had no child.
en gaf honum samt ekkert landsvæði, ekki svo mikið sem smáskika. Guð lofaði þó Abraham – sem þá átti ekkert barn – að hann og afkomendur hans myndu síðar eignast allt þetta land.
6 And God spoke in this manner: “That his posterity should sojourn in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage, and ill-treat them four hundred years;
Guð sagði enn fremur, að þessir afkomendur hans myndu flytjast burt úr landinu og setjast að annars staðar, þar sem þeir yrðu þrælar í 400 ár.
7 and the nation to which they shall be in bondage will I judge,” said God; “and after that they shall come forth, and shall worship me in this place.”
„En ég mun refsa þjóðinni sem þrælkar þá, “sagði Guð, „og síðan mun þjóð mín snúa aftur til Ísraelslands, og tilbiðja mig hér.“
8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so he begat Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begat Jacob, and Jacob the twelve patriarchs.
Um þetta leyti fyrirskipaði Guð Abraham að taka upp þá reglu, að umskera öll sveinbörn og þannig staðfesta sáttmálann milli sín og Abrahams og afkomenda hans. Ísak, sonur Abrahams, var því umskorinn þegar hann var átta daga gamall. Ísak eignaðist síðan Jakob og Jakob varð faðir hinna tólf ættfeðra Gyðingaþjóðarinnar.
9 And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt; and God was with him,
Synir Jakobs öfunduðu Jósef bróður sinn og seldu hann sem þræl til Egyptalands. En Guð var með Jósef,
10 and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt, and all his house.
bjargaði honum úr þrengingum hans og lét hann ná vinsældum Egypta. Guð veitti Jósef einnig óvenju mikinn vísdóm svo að Faraó gerði hann landstjóra yfir öllu Egyptalandi og hirðstjóra konungsættarinnar.
11 Now there came a famine over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great distress; and our fathers found no Sustenance.
Þá varð hungursneyð í Egyptalandi og Kanaan og upphófust mjög erfiðir tímar fyrir forfeður okkar. Þegar allur matur var á þrotum,
12 But Jacob, hearing that there was grain in Egypt, sent out our fathers first.
frétti Jakob að enn væri til korn í Egyptalandi og sendi því syni sína þangað til að kaupa korn.
13 And at the second time Joseph was recognized by his brothers, and the kindred of Joseph became known to Pharaoh.
Þegar þeir komu þangað í annað sinn, sagði Jósef þeim hver hann væri og kynnti bræður sína fyrir Faraó.
14 Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob to him, and all his kindred, seventy five souls.
Síðan sendi hann eftir Jakobi, föður sínum, til þess að fá hann, bræður sína og fjölskyldur þeirra – alls sjötíu og fimm manns – til að flytjast til Egyptalands.
15 And Jacob went down [[into Egypt]], and died, he and our fathers.
Þannig fluttist Jakob til Egyptalands og þar dó hann og allir synir hans.
16 And they were removed to Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.
Síðar voru þau öll flutt til Síkem og jörðuð í grafreitnum sem Abraham hafði keypt af sonum Hemors, föður Síkems.
17 But as the time of the promise drew near, which God solemnly made to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
Gyðingaþjóðinni fjölgaði mjög eftir því sem nær dró þeirri stundu, er Guð ætlaði að uppfylla loforðið, sem hann hafði gefið Abraham, en það var að leysa afkomendur hans úr þrældómnum í Egyptalandi. Sá sem var konungur Egypta á þeim tíma skeytti engu um minningu Jósefs.
18 until another king arose, who knew not Joseph.
19 The same dealt subtly with our race, and ill-treated our fathers, so that they should cast out their infants, that they might not be preserved alive.
Hann beitti þjóð okkar brögðum og neyddi foreldra til að bera út börn sín.
20 In which time Moses was born, and was exceedingly fair; who was nourished in his father's house three months.
A þessum tíma fæddist Móse. Hann var undurfagurt barn. Foreldrar hans leyndu honum heima í þrjá mánuði
21 And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for herself as a son.
og loks, þegar þau gátu ekki leynt honum lengur, urðu þau að bera hann út. Þá fann dóttir Faraós hann og tók hann að sér sem sitt eigið barn.
22 And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in his worlds and deeds.
Hún kenndi honum öll fræði Egypta og hann varð voldugur í orði og verki.
23 And when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the sons of Israel.
Dag einn datt Móse í hug – þá fertugum – að fara og heimsækja ættmenn sína, Ísraelsmenn.
24 And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed by smiting the Egyptian.
Þá sá hann Egypta misþyrma Ísraelsmanni. Hann vildi hefna ódæðisins og drap Egyptann.
25 For he supposed his brethren would understand that God through his hand would give them salvation; but they understood not.
Móse hélt, að Ísraelsmenn skildu að Guð hefði sent hann þeim til hjálpar, en svo var ekki.
26 And the next day he showed himself to them as they were contending, and urged them to peace, saying, Ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one another?
Daginn eftir heimsótti hann þá á ný og sá þá tvo Ísraelsmenn í áflogum. Hann reyndi að stilla til friðar og sagði: „Heyrið mig! Þið eruð bræður og eigið ekki að slást svona. Það er rangt!“
27 But he who was wronging his neighbor thrust him away, saying, “Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?
Sá sem átti upptökin hrinti þá hinum frá sér og spurði: „Hver gerði þig að leiðtoga og dómara yfir okkur?
28 Dost thou mean to kill me, as thou didst kill the Egyptian yesterday?”
Ætlarðu kannski að drepa mig eins og þú drapst Egyptann í gær?“
29 And Moses fled at this saying, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons.
Við þessi orð flýði Móse til fjalla og settist að í Midíanslandi. Þar eignaðist hann síðar tvo syni.
30 And when forty years were completed, there appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai an angel in the flaming fire of a bush.
Fjörutíu ár liðu og dag einn var hann staddur í eyðimörkinni við Sínaífjallið. Birtist honum þá engill í eldsloga, sem stóð upp úr runna nokkrum.
31 And Moses seeing it wondered at the sight; and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came [[to him]],
Þegar Móse sá logann, varð hann undrandi og hljóp að runnanum til að kanna málið betur. Þá kallaði Guð til hans og sagði:
32 saying, “I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob.” And Moses trembled and durst not behold.
„Ég er Guð feðra þinna – Abrahams, Ísaks og Jakobs.“Móse varð hræddur og þorði ekki að koma nær.
33 And the Lord said to him, “Loose the sandals from thy feet; for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
Þá sagði Drottinn við hann: „Farðu úr skónum, því að staðurinn, sem þú stendur á, er heilög jörð.
34 I have surely seen the oppression of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them; and now, come, I will send thee into Egypt.”
Ég hef séð neyð þjóðar minnar í Egyptalandi og heyrt hróp hennar. Ég ætla að leysa fólkið úr ánauðinni. Komdu, ég ætla að senda þig til Egyptalands.“
35 This Moses, whom they denied, saying, “Who made thee a ruler and a judge?” this very man did God send both as a ruler and a redeemer with the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Þannig sendi Guð þennan mann aftur til þjóðar sinnar, sem áður hafði hafnað honum með þessum orðum: „Hver gerði þig að leiðtoga og dómara yfir okkur?“Og Móse var sendur til að verða leiðtogi þeirra og lausnarmaður.
36 This very man brought them out, working wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.
Með mörgum athyglisverðum kraftaverkum leiddi hann Ísraelsmenn burt frá Egyptalandi, yfir Rauðahafið og síðan fram og aftur um eyðimörkina í fjörutíu ár.
37 This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, “A prophet will God raise up to you from among your brethren, as he raised up me.”
Það var þessi Móse sem sagði við Ísraelsmenn: „Guð mun reisa upp spámann líkan mér á meðal ykkar.“
38 This is he that was in the assembly in the wilderness with the anger who spake to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers; who received the living oracles to give to us;
Í eyðimörkinni var Móse milligöngumaðurinn – meðalgangari milli Ísraelsþjóðarinnar og engilsins, sem á Sínaífjalli afhenti þeim lög Guðs – hið lifandi orð.
39 to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back into Egypt,
En feður okkar höfnuðu Móse og vildu snúa aftur til Egyptalands.
40 saying to Aaron, “Make us gods who shall go before us; for as for this Moses, who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.”
Þeir sögðu við Aron: „Búðu til goð handa okkur, sem getur flutt okkur til baka, því að við vitum ekki hvað orðið hefur af þessum Móse, sem leiddi okkur burt frá Egyptalandi.“
41 And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
Síðan bjuggu þeir til kálfslíkneski og færðu því fórnir eins og það væri Guð, og þeir glöddust yfir verki sínu.
42 But God turned away, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the Prophets, “Did ye offer to me slain beasts and sacrifices for forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Þá sneri Guð sér frá þeim og leyfði þeim að fara sína leið og tilbiðja sólina, tunglið og stjörnurnar. Í spádómsbók Amosar spyr Guð: „Ísraelsmenn, færðuð þið mér fórnirnar þessi fjörutíu ár í eyðimörkinni?
43 And ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of the god Rephan, the figures which ye made to worship them; and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.”
Nei, hugur ykkar var hjá heiðnu goðunum, hjá Mólok, hjá stjörnuguðnum Refan og öllum hinum skurðgoðunum, sem þið bjugguð til. Því ætla ég að senda ykkur í ánauð austur til Babýlon.“
44 Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, as he that spoke to Moses commanded that he should make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
Forfeður okkar fluttu helgidóm sinn, tjaldbúðina, með sér á ferðum sínum um eyðimörkina. Í tjaldbúðinni geymdu þeir steintöflurnar, sem boðorðin tíu voru skráð á. Tjaldbúðin var gerð eftir nákvæmri fyrirmynd, sem engillinn sýndi Móse.
45 which also our fathers received and brought in with Joshua, at their taking possession of the gentiles whom God drove out from before our fathers, until the days of David;
Mörgum árum seinna, þegar Jósúa náði landinu af heiðingjunum, fluttu þeir hana með sér og notuðu fram á daga Davíðs konungs.
46 who found favor before God, and asked that he might find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
Guð blessaði Davíð ríkulega. Hann bað Guð þess að fá að byggja honum, Guði Jakobs, varanlegt musteri,
47 But Solomon built him a house.
en það verk kom í hlut Salómons.
48 Yet the Most High dwelleth not in [[temples]] made with hands; as saith the prophet,
En eitt er víst: Guð býr ekki í musterum sem menn hafa byggt. „Himnarnir eru hásæti mitt og jörðin er fótskör mín, “segir Drottinn með orðum spámannanna, og hann spyr: „Hvers konar hús getið þið byggt handa mér? Mundi ég dvelja þar?
49 “Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. What house will ye build for me? saith the Lord; or what is the place of my rest?
50 Did not my hands make all these things?”
Var það ekki ég sem skapaði bæði himin og jörð?“
51 Stiffnecked, and uncircumcised in heart and ears! ye do always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do ye.
En þið, þið eruð engu betri en heiðingjarnir, því að þið eruð harðir og ósveigjanlegir! Ætlið þið líka að standa gegn heilögum anda, eins og forfeður ykkar?
52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? And they slew those who foretold the coming of the righteous one, of whom ye have now become the betrayers and murderers;
Nefnið mér einhvern spámann, sem forfeður ykkar ofsóttu ekki? Þeir drápu meira að segja þá, sem sögðu fyrir komu hins réttláta – Krists – sem þið svikuð síðan og myrtuð!
53 ye who received the Law as ordained through angels, and did not keep it.
Já, þið fótumtroðið lög Guðs af ásettu ráði, enda þótt þið hafið fengið þau úr höndum engla.“
54 But when they heard these things, their hearts were filled with rage, and they gnashed their teeth at him.
Þegar meðlimir ráðsins heyrðu þessar ásakanir Stefáns, urðu þeir trylltir og gnístu tönnum af reiði.
55 But, being full of the Holy Spirit, he looked up earnestly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
En Stefán horfði til himins, fylltur heilögum anda og sá dýrð Guðs og Jesú standa til hægri handar Guði.
56 and said, Lo, I behold the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
„Sjáið!“sagði hann, „ég sé himnana opna og Jesú, sem er Kristur, standa við hægri hönd Guðs!“
57 And they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;
Þá æptu þeir til hans ókvæðisorð, gripu fyrir eyrun og yfirgnæfðu hann með hrópum sínum.
58 and having cast him out of the city, they stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul;
Síðan hröktu þeir hann úr borginni og grýttu hann. Þeir, sem vitni urðu að þessum atburði, eða framkvæmdu aftökuna, fóru úr yfirhöfnum sínum og lögðu þær við fætur ungs manns, sem Páll hét.
59 and they stoned Stephen, making supplication, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
Þegar grjótið dundi á Stefáni bað hann: „Jesús, tak þú við anda mínum.“
60 And kneeling down he cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And saying this, he fell asleep.
Hann féll á kné og hrópaði: „Drottinn, fyrirgefðu þeim þessa synd!“og með þessi orð á vörum, dó hann.
