Acts 11
1 And the apostles and the brethren throughout Judaea heard that the gentiles also had received the word of God.
Les apôtres et les frères de Judée apprirent que les païens aussi avaient accepté la Parole de Dieu,
2 And when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,
et Pierre, à son retour à Jérusalem, fut blâmé par les fidèles circoncis:
3 saying, Thou didst go in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.
«Tu es entré chez des incirconcis, lui dirent-ils, et tu as mangé avec eux!»
4 But Peter rehearsed the matter to them in order from the beginning, saying,
Mais Pierre leur raconta, en suivant l'ordre des faits, tout ce qui s'était passé:
5 I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, a sort of vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners, and it came even to me;
«J'étais, leur dit-il, dans la ville de Joppé, et pendant que je priais j'eus une extase et une vision m'apparut; c'était un objet descendant du ciel, ressemblant à une grande nappe nouée aux quatre coins et qui vint jusqu'à moi.
6 on which fixing my eyes, I observed, and saw the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the birds of the air.
Ayant regardé à l'intérieur, l'ayant bien examinée, j'y vis les quadrupèdes de la terre, les animaux sauvages, les reptiles et les oiseaux du ciel,
7 And I also heard a voice saying to me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
et j'entendis une voix qui me disait: «Lève-toi, Pierre, tue et mange»;
8 But I said, Not so, Lord; for nothing common or unclean ever entered my mouth.
je répondis: «Nullement, Seigneur, parce que jamais rien de souillés ni d'impur n'est entré dans ma bouche».
9 But a voice answered the second time out of heaven, That which God hath cleansed, call not thou common.
Une voix, venant du ciel, s'adressa à moi pour la seconde fois: «N'appelle pas souillés ce que Dieu a purifié.»
10 And this was done three times; and all were again drawn up into heaven.
Cela se répéta par trois fois, puis tout remonta au ciel.»
11 And lo! immediately there stood three men at the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea.
«Et voilà qu'à ce moment même trois hommes se présentèrent à la porte de la maison où j'étais; ils m'étaient envoyés de Césarée.
12 And the Spirit bade me go with them. And these six brethren also came with me, and we entered the man's house.
L'Esprit me dit d'aller avec eux sans aucun scrupule. Les six frères que voici m'accompagnèrent et nous entrâmes dans la maison de Cornélius.»
13 And he told us how he had seen the angel in his house, standing and saying to him, Send to Joppa, and call for Simon, surnamed Peter;
«Celui-ci nous raconta comment il avait vu dans sa maison l'ange se tenant devant lui et lui disant: «Envoie à Joppé et fais venir Simon, surnommé Pierre,
14 who will speak to thee words by which thou shalt be saved, and all thy house.
il te dira des choses par lesquelles tu obtiendras le salut, toi et tous les tiens.»
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
Lorsque je commençai à leur parler, l'Esprit saint descendit sur eux, comme sur nous à l'origine;
16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, that he said, John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
et je me souvins de ce mot du Seigneur, quand il disait: «Jean baptisait d'eau, mais vous, vous serez baptisés d'Esprit saint.»
17 Since then God gave the like gift to them as to us, on believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?
Si donc Dieu leur a accordé le même don qu'à nous, pour avoir cru au Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui étais-je moi pour oser m'opposer à Dieu?»
18 And when they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, So then to the gentiles also God hath granted repentance unto life.
A l'ouïe de ces paroles, ils se calmèrent, et ils rendirent gloire à Dieu: «Ainsi, disaient-ils, Dieu a aussi accordé aux païens la repentance pour qu'ils aient la vie.»
19 Now they who were scattered abroad by the persecution that arose on account of Stephen traveled as far as Phenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none but Jews.
Ceux qui avaient été dispersés par la persécution, à la suite de la mort d'Étienne, allèrent jusqu'en Phénicie et atteignirent Chypre et Antioche, n'annonçant la parole à personne qu'aux Juifs.
20 But some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Greeks, publishing the glad tidings of the Lord Jesus.
Mais quelques-uns d'eux qui étaient Chypriotes et Cyrénéens, arrivés à Antioche, parlèrent aussi aux Hellénistes et leur annoncèrent l'Évangile du Seigneur Jésus.
21 And the hand of the Lord was with them; and a great number believed, and turned to the Lord.
La main du Seigneur fut avec eux et grand fut le nombre de ceux qui crurent et se convertirent au Seigneur.
22 But the talk concerning them came to the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem; and they sent forth Barnabas, to go as far as Antioch;
Le bruit en parvint aux oreilles des membres de l'Église de Jérusalem et ils envoyèrent Barnabas jusqu'à Antioche.
23 who, when he came, and saw the grace of God, rejoiced, and exhorted all to cleave to the Lord with purpose of heart;
Lorsque, à son arrivée, il vit la grâce de Dieu, il s'en réjouit et il les exhorta tous à rester, d'un coeur convaincu, fidèles au Seigneur,
24 for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord.
parce qu'il était homme de bien, plein d'Esprit saint et de foi; et un grand nombre de personnes s'unirent au Seigneur.
25 And he went to Tarsus, to seek for Saul;
Barnabas se rendit ensuite à Tarse, y chercha Saul, le trouva et l'amena à Antioche.
26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it came to pass, that for a whole year they came together in the church, and taught a great multitude; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
Durant une année entière ils restèrent ensemble dans l'Église et instruisirent un grand nombre de personnes. Ce fut à Antioche qu'on donna pour la première fois aux disciples le nom de chrétiens.
27 And in those days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
En ce temps-là, des prophètes se rendirent de Jérusalem à Antioche.
28 And one of them named Agabus stood up, and signified by the Spirit, that there was about to be a great famine over the whole world; which came to pass in the days of Claudius.
L'un d'eux, nommé Agabus, se leva et annonça par l'Esprit qu'une grande famine régnerait sur toute la terre; elle arriva, en effet, sous Claude.
29 And according as any one of the disciples was prospered, they determined every one of them to send relief to the brethren who dwelt in Judaea;
Les disciples décidèrent d'envoyer, chacun selon son pouvoir, un secours aux frères demeurant en Judée;
30 which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
ce qu'ils firent en le remettant aux Anciens par l'entremise de Barnabas et de Saul.
