Acts 11
1 And the apostles and the brethren throughout Judaea heard that the gentiles also had received the word of God.
Cependant les apôtres et les frères qui étaient en Judée, apprirent que les Gentils avaient aussi reçu la parole de Dieu,
2 And when Peter went up to Jerusalem, they that were of the circumcision contended with him,
et lorsque Pierre monta à Jérusalem, les fidèles de la circoncision eurent une contestation avec lui,
3 saying, Thou didst go in to men uncircumcised, and didst eat with them.
disant: «Tu es entré chez des incirconcis, et tu as mangé avec eux!»
4 But Peter rehearsed the matter to them in order from the beginning, saying,
Pierre se mit à leur exposer de point en point ce qui s'était passé.
5 I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, a sort of vessel descending, as it were a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners, and it came even to me;
«J'étais, dit-il, en prière dans la ville de Joppé, et j'eus, en extase, une vision: je vis descendre un objet semblable à une grande nappe qui descendait du ciel, tenue par les quatre coins, et qui s'abaissa jusqu’à moi.
6 on which fixing my eyes, I observed, and saw the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the birds of the air.
Ayant arrêté mes regards sur cette nappe, je la considérai, et j'y vis les quadrupèdes de la terre, les bêtes sauvages, les reptiles et les oiseaux du ciel.
7 And I also heard a voice saying to me, Arise, Peter; slay and eat.
J'entendis aussi une voix qui me dit: «Lève-toi, Pierre, tue, et mange.»
8 But I said, Not so, Lord; for nothing common or unclean ever entered my mouth.
Et je dis: «Je n'ai garde, Seigneur, car jamais ce qui est souillé ou impur n'est entré dans ma bouche.»
9 But a voice answered the second time out of heaven, That which God hath cleansed, call not thou common.
Mais une voix parlant une seconde fois du ciel, répondit: «Ce que Dieu a déclaré pur, toi, ne le tiens pas pour souillé.»
10 And this was done three times; and all were again drawn up into heaven.
Cela arriva par trois fois, puis tout fut retiré dans le ciel.
11 And lo! immediately there stood three men at the house where I was, having been sent to me from Caesarea.
«Au même instant, trois hommes se présentèrent à la maison où nous étions: on les avait envoyés de Césarée vers moi.
12 And the Spirit bade me go with them. And these six brethren also came with me, and we entered the man's house.
L'Esprit me dit d'aller avec eux sans hésiter. Les six frères que voici, vinrent aussi avec moi, et nous entrâmes dans la maison de Corneille.
13 And he told us how he had seen the angel in his house, standing and saying to him, Send to Joppa, and call for Simon, surnamed Peter;
Il nous raconta comment il avait vu dans sa maison un ange apparaître, et lui dire: «Envoie à Joppé, et fais venir Simon surnommé Pierre,
14 who will speak to thee words by which thou shalt be saved, and all thy house.
qui te dira des choses par lesquelles tu seras sauvé, toi et toute ta maison.»
15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, as on us at the beginning.
Lorsque j'eus commencé à parler, le Saint-Esprit descendit sur eux, ainsi qu'il est descendu sur nous au commencement,
16 And I remembered the word of the Lord, that he said, John indeed baptized with water, but ye shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.
et je me ressouvins de ce mot du Seigneur: «Jean a baptisé d'eau, mais vous, vous serez baptisés d'esprit saint.»
17 Since then God gave the like gift to them as to us, on believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?
Si donc Dieu leur a fait le même don qu'à nous, lorsque nous avons cru au Seigneur Jésus-Christ, qui étais-je, moi, pour m’opposer à Dieu? Le pouvais-je?»
18 And when they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, So then to the gentiles also God hath granted repentance unto life.
Quand ils eurent entendu ce récit, ils s'apaisèrent et glorifièrent Dieu en disant: «Dieu a donc donné aussi aux Gentils la repentance pour avoir la vie.»
19 Now they who were scattered abroad by the persecution that arose on account of Stephen traveled as far as Phenicia, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none but Jews.
Ceux qui avaient été dispersés par la persécution survenue à l'occasion d'Etienne, allèrent jusqu'en Phénicie, dans l'île de Chypre et à Antioche, n'annonçant la Parole à personne, sinon aux Juifs.
20 But some of them were men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Greeks, publishing the glad tidings of the Lord Jesus.
Toutefois il y eut parmi eux quelques Cypriotes et quelques Cyrénéens, qui, étant venus à Antioche, s'adressèrent aux Grecs, et leur annoncèrent le Seigneur Jésus.
21 And the hand of the Lord was with them; and a great number believed, and turned to the Lord.
Et la main du Seigneur était avec eux, de sorte qu'un grand nombre de personnes crurent et se convertirent au Seigneur.
22 But the talk concerning them came to the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem; and they sent forth Barnabas, to go as far as Antioch;
La nouvelle en étant venue aux oreilles de l'église de Jérusalem, on chargea Barnabas de se rendre jusqu’à Antioche.
23 who, when he came, and saw the grace of God, rejoiced, and exhorted all to cleave to the Lord with purpose of heart;
Lorsqu'il fut arrivé, et qu'il eut vu la grâce que Dieu avait accordée à ceux d’Antioche, il s'en réjouit et les exhorta tous à demeurer attachés au Seigneur, comme du reste ils se le proposaient en leur coeur:
24 for he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. And a great multitude was added to the Lord.
car c'était un homme de bien, plein d'esprit saint et de foi. Et une foule assez considérable se joignit au Seigneur.
25 And he went to Tarsus, to seek for Saul;
Barnabas alla ensuite à Tarse, pour chercher Saul, et, l'ayant trouvé, il l'amena à Antioche.
26 and when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. And it came to pass, that for a whole year they came together in the church, and taught a great multitude; and the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.
Ils passèrent ensemble une année entière dans cette église, et instruisirent beaucoup de monde. Ce fut à Antioche que, pour la première fois, les disciples furent appelés chrétiens.
27 And in those days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
A la même époque, des prophètes descendirent de Jérusalem à Antioche.
28 And one of them named Agabus stood up, and signified by the Spirit, that there was about to be a great famine over the whole world; which came to pass in the days of Claudius.
L'un d'eux, nommé Agabus, s'étant levé, présagea par l'Esprit, qu'il y aurait une grande famine sur toute la terre: elle eut effectivement lieu sous Claude.
29 And according as any one of the disciples was prospered, they determined every one of them to send relief to the brethren who dwelt in Judaea;
Les disciples décidèrent d'envoyer, chacun selon ses moyens, un secours aux frères qui habitaient la Judée:
30 which also they did, sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.
ce qu'ils firent. On envoya ce secours aux anciens par l'entremise de Barnabas et de Saul.
