Acts 1
1 The former narrative I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus both did and taught from the beginning
Théophile, j'ai raconté dans mon premier livre tout ce que Jésus a fait et enseigné dès le commencement
2 until the day in which, after he had through the Holy Spirit given commandments to the apostles whom he had chosen, he was taken up;
jusqu'au jour où il fut enlevé de ce monde, après avoir, par le Saint-Esprit, donné ses ordres à ceux qu'il avait choisis pour apôtres.
3 to whom also he showed himself living, after he had suffered, by many sure proofs, appearing to them during forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
Il s'était aussi montré à eux, après qu'il eut souffert, et leur avait donné plusieurs preuves de sa résurrection, pendant quarante jours qu'il leur apparut et les entretint de ce qui a trait au royaume de Dieu.
4 And while in assembly with them, he commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for what had been promised by the Father, which [[said he]] ye heard from me;
Un jour qu'il se trouvait avec eux, il leur recommanda de ne pas s'éloigner de Jérusalem, mais d'y attendre l'accomplissement de la promesse du Père, «dont je vous ai parlé, leur dit-il,
5 for John indeed baptized with water, but ye will be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days hence.
car Jean a baptisé d'eau, mais vous, vous serez baptisés d'esprit saint dans peu de jours.»
6 They therefore, having come together, asked him, saying, Lord, art thou at this time about to restore the kingdom to Israel?
Eux donc, s'étant rapprochés, lui demandèrent: «Seigneur, est-ce en ce temps que tu dois rétablir le royaume pour Israël?»
7 But he said to them, It belongeth not to you to know times or seasons, which the Father appointed by his own authority.
Il leur dit: «Il ne vous appartient pas de connaître les temps ni les moments que Dieu a déterminés de sa propre autorité, mais quand le Saint-Esprit sera venu sur vous,
8 But ye will receive power when the Holy Spirit hath come upon you; and ye will be my witnesses, both in Jerusalem and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
vous serez revêtus de force, et vous serez mes témoins à Jérusalem, dans toute la Judée, dans la Samarie et jusqu'au bout du monde.»
9 And having thus spoken, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
En disant ces mots, il fut élevé en leur présence, et une nuée le déroba à leurs yeux.
10 And while they were looking earnestly into heaven as he went up, lo! two men stood by them in white apparel,
Comme leurs regards restaient fixés vers le ciel, pendant qu'il s'en allait, deux hommes vêtus de blanc se présentèrent à eux,
11 who said, Men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This Jesus, who hath been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same manner in which ye beheld him going into heaven.
et leur dirent: «Galiléens, pourquoi vous arrêtez-vous à regarder au ciel? Ce Jésus qui a été enlevé d'avec vous au ciel, en viendra de la même manière que vous l'y avez vu monter.»
12 Then they returned to Jerusalem, from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, within a sabbath-day's journey.
Alors ils revinrent de la montagne appelée Bois d'oliviers, à Jérusalem, qui n'en est éloignée que de la distance d'un sabbat.
13 And when they had come in, they went up into the upper room where they were making their abode, namely, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the zealot, and Judas the brother of James.
De retour à la ville, ils montèrent dans la chambre haute où se tenaient d'ordinaire Pierre, Jean, Jacques, André, Philippe et Thomas, Barthélemi et Matthieu, Jacques, fils d'Alphée, et Simon le zélateur, et Jude, fils de Jacques.
14 These all continued with one accord in prayer, with women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.
Ils étaient tous constamment en prière, tous ensemble, avec quelques femmes, notamment Marie, mère de Jésus, et avec les frères de Jésus.
15 And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the brethren, and said, (the number of the names together was about one hundred and twenty, )
En ces jours-là, Pierre se leva au milieu des disciples (la réunion était nombreuse, d'environ cent vingt personnes) et il leur dit:
16 Brethren, it was necessary that this scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David spoke before concerning Judas, who became guide to those who took Jesus.
«Frères, il fallait que s'accomplît la parole que le Saint-Esprit a jadis prononcée par la bouche de David, au sujet de Judas, le guide de ceux qui ont arrêté Jésus,
17 For he was numbered among us, and obtained the allotment of this ministry.
car il était compté parmi nous, et il avait part à notre ministère.»
18 Now this man purchased a field with the wages of the iniquity; and falling headlong he burst asunder in the middle, and all his bowels gushed out.
(Ce misérable, après avoir acheté un fonds de terre avec le salaire de son crime, est tombé la tête la première; il s'est ouvert le ventre et toutes ses entrailles sont sorties.
19 And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that that field is called in their own tongue, Aceldamach, that is, Field of Blood.
Ce fait est si connu de tous les habitants de Jérusalem, que ce terrain a été appelé dans leur langue Akeldama, c’est-à-dire, la Place du Sang.)
20 For it is written in the book of Psalms, “Let his habitation be made desolate, and let no one dwell therein;” and, “Let another take his office.”
«En effet, il est écrit dans le livre des Psaumes: «Que sa demeure soit déserte, que celui qui l'habite, ne l'occupe pas, » et «qu’un autre prenne sa charge.»
21 Of these men, therefore, who accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,
En conséquence, il faut que l'un de ceux qui nous ont accompagnés pendant tout le temps que le Seigneur Jésus a vécu avec nous,
22 from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us, must one be made a witness with us of his resurrection.
depuis le baptême de Jean jusqu'au jour où il nous a été enlevé, se joigne à nous comme témoin de sa résurrection.»
23 And they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.
Il s'en présenta deux: Joseph appelé Barsabas, surnommé Juste, et Matthias.
24 And they prayed saying, Thou, Lord, who knowest the hearts of all men, show which of these two thou hast chosen
Alors les disciples firent cette prière: «Seigneur, toi qui connais les coeurs de tous, montre-nous lequel de ces deux tu as choisi
25 to take the part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell away, that he might go to his own place.
pour occuper, dans ce ministère de l'apostolat, la place que Judas a laissée, pour aller en son lieu.»
26 And they cast lots for them; and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
Puis on tira au sort: le sort tomba sur Matthias, et l'on vota son adjonction aux onze Apôtres.»
