Matthew 3
1 And in those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea
En ce temps-là, Jean le Baptiste vint prêcher dans le désert de Judée, en disant:
2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
« Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux est proche. »
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one who calls out in the wilderness, 'Prepare the way of the Lord. Make his roads straight.'"
Car c'est lui qui a été annoncé par le prophète Ésaïe, en disant, « La voix de celui qui crie dans le désert, préparez le chemin du Seigneur! Rends ses chemins droits! »
4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel's hair and with a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey.
Jean portait lui-même des vêtements en poil de chameau et une ceinture de cuir autour de la taille. Il se nourrissait de sauterelles et de miel sauvage.
5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him,
Alors les gens de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de toute la région du Jourdain sortirent vers lui.
6 and they were baptized by him in the Jordan river, confessing their sins.
Ils se firent baptiser par lui dans le Jourdain, en confessant leurs péchés.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism he said to them, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Mais, voyant venir pour son baptême un grand nombre de pharisiens et de sadducéens, il leur dit: « Races de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère à venir?
8 Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance,
Produisez donc des fruits dignes de la repentance!
9 and do not think to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
Ne vous dites pas: « Nous avons Abraham pour père », car je vous dis que Dieu peut susciter des enfants à Abraham à partir de ces pierres.
10 "Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that does not bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
Maintenant encore, la hache est à la racine des arbres. C'est pourquoi tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bons fruits est coupé et jeté au feu.
11 I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but the one who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and with fire.
« Moi, je vous baptise d'eau pour la repentance, mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter ses sandales. Il vous baptisera dans le Saint-Esprit.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."
Il a dans sa main le van, et il nettoiera son aire à fond. Il amassera son blé dans le grenier, mais il brûlera l'ivraie dans un feu inextinguible. »
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
Alors Jésus vint de Galilée au Jourdain vers Jean, pour être baptisé par lui.
14 But John would have hindered him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?"
Mais Jean l'en empêchait, disant: « J'ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et tu viens à moi? »
15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, "Allow it to happen now, for this is the proper way for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.
Mais Jésus, prenant la parole, lui dit: « Permets-le maintenant, car c'est la manière qui convient pour que nous accomplissions toute justice. » Alors il le permit.
16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water; and look, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
Jésus, après avoir été baptisé, sortit directement de l'eau; et voici, les cieux lui furent ouverts. Il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.
17 And look, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
Et voici, une voix venant des cieux dit: « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai mis toute mon affection. »
