Matthew 11
1 And it happened that when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.
Lorsque Jésus eut achevé de donner des instructions à ses douze disciples, il partit de là pour enseigner et prêcher dans leurs villes.
2 Now when John heard in prison the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples
Or, lorsque Jean entendit dans la prison les œuvres du Christ, il envoya deux de ses disciples
3 and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?"
et lui dit: « Es-tu celui qui vient, ou devons-nous en chercher un autre? »
4 And Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John the things which you hear and see:
Jésus leur répondit: Allez annoncer à Jean les choses que vous entendez et que vous voyez:
5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.
les aveugles recouvrent la vue, les boiteux marchent, les lépreux sont purifiés, les sourds entendent, les morts ressuscitent, et la bonne nouvelle est annoncée aux pauvres.
6 And blessed is he who is not offended by me."
Heureux celui qui ne trouve en moi aucune occasion de chute! »
7 And as these went their way, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John, "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
Comme ils s'en allaient, Jésus se mit à dire à la foule, au sujet de Jean: « Qu'êtes-vous allés voir dans le désert? Un roseau secoué par le vent?
8 But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing? Look, those who wear soft things are in kings' houses.
Et vous, qu'êtes-vous allés voir? Un homme vêtu de vêtements souples? Voici, ceux qui portent des vêtements souples sont dans les maisons des rois.
9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet.
Mais pourquoi êtes-vous sortis? Pour voir un prophète? Oui, je vous le dis, et bien plus qu'un prophète.
10 This is the one of whom it is written, 'Look, I send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.'
Car c'est lui dont il est écrit: « Voici, j'envoie mon messager devant toi, qui préparera ton chemin devant toi ».
11 Truly I tell you, among those who are born of women there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
Je vous le dis en toute certitude, parmi ceux qui sont nés de femmes, il ne s'est pas trouvé de plus grand que Jean le Baptiseur; mais le plus petit dans le Royaume des cieux est plus grand que lui.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent are taking it by force.
Depuis le temps de Jean Baptiste jusqu'à maintenant, le Royaume des cieux est soumis à la violence, et les violents s'en emparent par la force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
Car tous les prophètes et la loi ont prophétisé jusqu'à Jean.
14 And if you are willing to receive it, this is Elijah, who is to come.
Si vous êtes disposés à le recevoir, celui-ci est Élie, qui doit venir.
15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
Que celui qui a des oreilles pour entendre, entende.
16 "But to what should I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces, who call to their companions
« Mais à quoi comparerai-je cette génération? Elle ressemble à des enfants assis sur les places publiques, qui appellent leurs compagnons
17 and say, 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We wailed in mourning, and you did not mourn.'
et disent: 'Nous avons joué de la flûte pour vous, et vous n'avez pas dansé. Nous avons pleuré pour vous, et vous ne vous êtes pas lamentés ».
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, 'He has a demon.'
Car Jean est venu sans manger ni boire, et ils disent: « Il a un démon ».
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Look, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.' But wisdom is justified by her children."
Le Fils de l'homme est venu en mangeant et en buvant, et l'on dit: « Voici un glouton et un ivrogne, l'ami des publicains et des pécheurs ». Mais la sagesse est justifiée par ses enfants. »
20 Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works had been done, because they did not repent.
Puis il se mit à dénoncer les villes où s'étaient accomplis la plupart de ses exploits, parce qu'elles ne se repentaient pas.
21 "Woe to you, Chorazin. Woe to you, Bethsaida. For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which were done in you, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
« Malheur à toi, Chorazin! Malheur à toi, Bethsaïda! Car, si l'on avait fait à Tyr et à Sidon les miracles qui ont été faits chez vous, il y a longtemps qu'elles se seraient repenties, avec le sac et la cendre.
22 But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
Mais je vous le dis, au jour du jugement, Tyr et Sidon seront plus tolérables que vous.
23 And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will be brought down to hell. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until this day. (Hadēs g86)
Toi, Capharnaüm, qui t'es élevé jusqu'au ciel, tu descendras au séjour des morts. Car si l'on avait fait à Sodome les miracles qui ont été faits chez toi, elle serait restée jusqu'à aujourd'hui. (Hadēs g86)
24 But I tell you that it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom, on the day of judgment, than for you."
Mais je vous dis qu'au jour du jugement, il sera plus supportable pour le pays de Sodome que pour vous. »
25 At that time, Jesus answered, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you hid these things from the wise and intelligent, and revealed them to little children.
En ce temps-là, Jésus répondit: « Je te rends grâce, Père, Seigneur du ciel et de la terre, d'avoir caché ces choses aux sages et aux intelligents, et de les avoir révélées aux enfants.
26 Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
Oui, Père, car cela a été agréable à tes yeux.
27 All things have been delivered to me by my Father. No one knows the Son, except the Father; neither does anyone know the Father, except the Son, and he to whom the Son desires to reveal him.
Toutes choses m'ont été remises par mon Père. Personne ne connaît le Fils, si ce n'est le Père; et personne ne connaît le Père, si ce n'est le Fils et celui à qui le Fils veut le révéler.
28 "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.
« Venez à moi, vous tous qui peinez et ployez sous le fardeau, et je vous donnerai du repos.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find rest for your souls.
Prenez mon joug sur vous et apprenez de moi, car je suis doux et humble de cœur; et vous trouverez du repos pour vos âmes.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Car mon joug est facile, et mon fardeau est léger. »
