1 Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole empire should be enrolled.
But it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census should be made of all the habitable world.
2 This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
The census itself first took place when Cyrenius had the government of Syria.
3 All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.
And all went to be inscribed in the census roll, each to his own city:
4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David;
and Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city Nazareth to Judaea, to David's city, the which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,

to be inscribed in the census roll with Mary who was betrothed to him [as his] wife, she being great with child.
6 It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth.
And it came to pass, while they were there, the days of her giving birth [to her child] were fulfilled,
7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son, and wrapped him with pieces of cloth, and placed him in a feeding trough, because there was no guest room available for them.
and she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him up in swaddling-clothes and laid him in the manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.

9 And look, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
And lo, an angel of [the] Lord was there by them, and [the] glory of [the] Lord shone around them, and they feared [with] great fear.
10 The angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for see, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.
And the angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I announce to you glad tidings of great joy, which shall be to all the people;
11 For there is born to you, this day, in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ, the Lord.
for to-day a Saviour has been born to you in David's city, who is Christ [the] Lord.
12 This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough."

15 And it happened that when the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said one to another, "Let us go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
And it came to pass, as the angels departed from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, Let us make our way then now as far as Bethlehem, and let us see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.
16 They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.
And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger;
17 When they saw it, they made known the saying which was spoken to them about this child.
and having seen [it] they made known about the country the thing which had been said to them concerning this child.
18 All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.
And all who heard [it] wondered at the things said to them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
But Mary kept all these things [in her mind], pondering [them] in her heart.
20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.

49 He said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be doing the works of my Father?"
And he said to them, Why [is it] that ye have sought me? did ye not know that I ought to be [occupied] in my Father's business?
