Psalms 37
1 [By David.] Do not fret because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness.
Öfundaðu aldrei vonda menn,
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither like the green herb.
því að fyrr en varir eru þeir fallnir og visna eins og grasið.
3 Trust in the LORD, and do good. Dwell in the land, and enjoy safe pasture.
Treystu heldur Drottni, vertu góðgjarn og sýndu kærleika. Þá muntu búa öruggur í landinu og farnast vel.
4 Also delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Þú skalt gleðjast í Drottni – og hann mun veita þér það sem hjarta þitt þráir.
5 Commit your way to the LORD. Trust also in him, and he will act.
Fel Drottni framtíð þína, áform þín og verk, og treystu honum. Hann mun vel fyrir öllu sjá.
6 And he will make your righteousness go forth as the light, and your justice as the noonday.
Heiðarleiki þinn og hreinskilni verða öllum augljós, og Drottinn mun láta þig ná rétti þínum.
7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him. Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked plots happen.
Hvíldu í Drottni og treystu honum. Bíð þess í þolinmæði að hann hefjist handa. Öfunda ekki vonda menn sem vegnar vel.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath. Do not fret, it leads only to evildoing.
Láttu af reiðinni! Slepptu heiftinni. Vertu ekki svekktur og áhyggjufullur – slíkt leiðir ekki til góðs.
9 For evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.
Þeir sem illt fremja verða þurrkaðir út, en þeir sem treysta Drottni eignast landið og gæði þess.
10 For yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more. Yes, though you look for his place, he isn't there.
Innan skamms verða guðleysingjarnir á bak og burt. Þegar þú leitar þeirra eru þeir horfnir.
11 But the humble shall inherit the land, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
En hinir hógværu fá landið til eignar, þeir munu hljóta blessun og frið.
12 The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes at him with his teeth.
Drottinn hlær að þeim sem brugga launráð gegn hans trúuðu.
13 The LORD will laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming.
Hann hefur þegar ákveðið daginn er þeir verða dæmdir.
14 The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, to kill those who are upright in the way.
Óguðlegir hyggja á illt gegn réttlátum, undirbúa blóðbað.
15 Their sword shall enter into their own heart. Their bows shall be broken.
En þeir munu farast fyrir eigin sverði og bogar þeirra verða brotnir.
16 Better is a little that the righteous has, than the abundance of many wicked.
Betra er að eiga lítið og vera guðrækinn, en óguðlegur og hafa allsnægtir,
17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but the LORD upholds the righteous.
því að óguðlegir munu falla, en Drottinn annast sína trúuðu.
18 The LORD knows the days of the perfect. Their inheritance shall be forever.
Daglega skoðar Drottinn réttlætisverk trúaðra og reiknar þeim eilíf laun.
19 They shall not be disappointed in the time of evil. In the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
Hann styður þá í kreppunni og heldur lífinu í þeim í hallæri.
20 But the wicked shall perish. The enemies of the LORD shall be like the burning of an oven. They will vanish—vanish like smoke.
Vantrúaðir farast og óvinir Guðs visna eins og grasið. Eins og sinu verður þeim brennt, þeir líða burt eins og reykur.
21 The wicked borrow, and do not pay back, but the righteous give generously.
Guðlaus maður tekur lán og borgar ekki, en hinn guðrækni er ónískur og gefur með gleði.
22 For such as are blessed by him shall inherit the land. Those who are cursed by him shall be cut off.
Þeir sem Drottinn blessar eignast landið, en bannfærðum verður útrýmt.
23 The steps of a man are established by the LORD, and he delights in his way.
Drottinn stýrir skrefum hins guðrækna og gleðst yfir breytni hans.
24 Though he stumble, he shall not fall, for the LORD holds him up with his hand.
Þótt hann falli þá liggur hann ekki flatur því að Drottinn reisir hann á fætur.
25 I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.
Ungur var ég og nú er ég gamall orðinn, en aldrei sá ég Drottin snúa baki við guðhræddum manni né heldur börn hans biðja sér matar.
26 All day long he deals graciously and lends, and his offspring are a blessing.
Nei, guðræknir menn eru mildir og lána og börn þeirra verða öðrum til blessunar.
27 Turn away from evil, and do good. Live securely forever.
Viljir þú búa við frið og lifa lengi, þá forðastu illt en gerðu gott,
28 For the LORD loves justice, and doesn't forsake his faithful ones. They are preserved forever, but the children of the wicked shall be cut off.
því að Drottinn hefur mætur á góðum verkum og yfirgefur ekki sína trúuðu, hann mun varðveita þá, en uppræta niðja óguðlegra.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land, and live in it forever.
Hinir réttlátu fá landið til eignar og búa þar mann fram af manni.
30 The mouth of the righteous talks of wisdom. His tongue speaks justice.
Guðrækinn maður talar speki, enda réttsýnn og sanngjarn.
31 The law of his God is in his heart. None of his steps shall slide.
Lögmál Guðs er í hjarta hans og hann kann að greina gott frá illu.
32 The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to kill him.
Ranglátir menn njósna um réttláta, vilja þá feiga.
33 The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.
En Drottinn stöðvar áform illvirkjanna og sýknar réttláta fyrir dómi.
34 Wait for the LORD, and keep his way, and he will exalt you to inherit the land. When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
Óttastu ekki, því að Drottinn mun svara bæn þinni! Gakktu hiklaust á hans vegum. Á réttum tíma mun hann veita þér velgengni og uppreisn æru. Þá muntu sjá illvirkjunum útrýmt.
35 I have seen the wicked wielding great power, and towering like a cedar of Lebanon.
Ég sá vondan mann og hrokafullan – hann þandi sig út eins og laufmikið tré –
36 And I passed by, and look, he was not. And I looked for him, but he could not be found.
en svo var hann horfinn! Ég leitaði eftir honum, en fann hann ekki framar.
37 Observe the blameless, and see the upright, for there is a future for the man of peace.
En hvað um hinn ráðvanda og hreinskilna? Það er önnur saga! Því að góðir menn og friðsamir eiga framtíð fyrir höndum.
38 As for transgressors, they shall be destroyed together. The future of the wicked shall be cut off.
Illum mönnum verður útrýmt og þeir eiga enga framtíðarvon.
39 The salvation of the righteous is from the LORD. He is their stronghold in the time of trouble.
Drottinn bjargar hinum guðræknu. Hann er þeim hjálp og skjól á neyðartímum.
40 And the LORD helps them, and rescues them. He rescues them from the wicked, and saves them, Because they have taken refuge in him.
Þeir treysta honum og því hjálpar hann þeim og frelsar þá frá vélráðum óguðlegra.
