< Matthew 6 >
1 "Be careful that you do not do your righteousness before people, to be seen by them, or else you have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
sāvadhānā bhavata, manujān darśayituṁ tēṣāṁ gōcarē dharmmakarmma mā kuruta, tathā kr̥tē yuṣmākaṁ svargasthapituḥ sakāśāt kiñcana phalaṁ na prāpsyatha|
2 Therefore when you practice charitable giving, do not sound a trumpet before yourself, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may get glory from people. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
tvaṁ yadā dadāsi tadā kapaṭinō janā yathā manujēbhyaḥ praśaṁsāṁ prāptuṁ bhajanabhavanē rājamārgē ca tūrīṁ vādayanti, tathā mā kuri, ahaṁ tubhyaṁ yathārthaṁ kathayāmi, tē svakāyaṁ phalam alabhanta|
3 But when you practice charitable giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand does,
kintu tvaṁ yadā dadāsi, tadā nijadakṣiṇakarō yat karōti, tad vāmakaraṁ mā jñāpaya|
4 so that your charitable giving may be in secret, then your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
tēna tava dānaṁ guptaṁ bhaviṣyati yastu tava pitā guptadarśī, sa prakāśya tubhyaṁ phalaṁ dāsyati|
5 "And when you pray, you are not to be as the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward.
aparaṁ yadā prārthayasē, tadā kapaṭina̮iva mā kuru, yasmāt tē bhajanabhavanē rājamārgasya kōṇē tiṣṭhantō lōkān darśayantaḥ prārthayituṁ prīyantē; ahaṁ yuṣmān tathyaṁ vadāmi, tē svakīyaphalaṁ prāpnuvan|
6 But you, when you pray, enter into your inner chamber, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
tasmāt prārthanākālē antarāgāraṁ praviśya dvāraṁ rudvvā guptaṁ paśyatastava pituḥ samīpē prārthayasva; tēna tava yaḥ pitā guptadarśī, sa prakāśya tubhyaṁ phalaṁ dāsyati
7 And in praying, do not use vain repetitions, as the unbelievers do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking.
aparaṁ prārthanākālē dēvapūjakāiva mudhā punaruktiṁ mā kuru, yasmāt tē bōdhantē, bahuvāraṁ kathāyāṁ kathitāyāṁ tēṣāṁ prārthanā grāhiṣyatē|
8 Therefore do not be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him.
yūyaṁ tēṣāmiva mā kuruta, yasmāt yuṣmākaṁ yad yat prayōjanaṁ yācanātaḥ prāgēva yuṣmākaṁ pitā tat jānāti|
9 Therefore, you should pray this way: 'Our Father in heaven, holy be your name.
ataēva yūyama īdr̥k prārthayadhvaṁ, hē asmākaṁ svargasthapitaḥ, tava nāma pūjyaṁ bhavatu|
10 Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
tava rājatvaṁ bhavatu; tavēcchā svargē yathā tathaiva mēdinyāmapi saphalā bhavatu|
11 Give us today our daily bread.
asmākaṁ prayōjanīyam āhāram adya dēhi|
12 And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.
vayaṁ yathā nijāparādhinaḥ kṣamāmahē, tathaivāsmākam aparādhān kṣamasva|
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.'
asmān parīkṣāṁ mānaya, kintu pāpātmanō rakṣa; rājatvaṁ gauravaṁ parākramaḥ ētē sarvvē sarvvadā tava; tathāstu|
14 "For if you forgive people their wrongdoing, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
yadi yūyam anyēṣām aparādhān kṣamadhvē tarhi yuṣmākaṁ svargasthapitāpi yuṣmān kṣamiṣyatē;
15 But if you do not forgive people, neither will your Father forgive your wrongdoing.
kintu yadi yūyam anyēṣām aparādhān na kṣamadhvē, tarhi yuṣmākaṁ janakōpi yuṣmākam aparādhān na kṣamiṣyatē|
16 "Moreover when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces, that they may be seen by people to be fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward.
aparam upavāsakālē kapaṭinō janā mānuṣān upavāsaṁ jñāpayituṁ svēṣāṁ vadanāni mlānāni kurvvanti, yūyaṁ ta̮iva viṣaṇavadanā mā bhavata; ahaṁ yuṣmān tathyaṁ vadāmi tē svakīyaphalam alabhanta|
17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head, and wash your face;
yadā tvam upavasasi, tadā yathā lōkaistvaṁ upavāsīva na dr̥śyasē, kintu tava yō'gōcaraḥ pitā tēnaiva dr̥śyasē, tatkr̥tē nijaśirasi tailaṁ marddaya vadanañca prakṣālaya;
18 so that you are not seen by people to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.
tēna tava yaḥ pitā guptadarśī sa prakāśya tubhyaṁ phalaṁ dāsyati|
19 "Do not store up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and decay destroy, and where thieves break through and steal;
aparaṁ yatra sthānē kīṭāḥ kalaṅkāśca kṣayaṁ nayanti, caurāśca sandhiṁ karttayitvā cōrayituṁ śaknuvanti, tādr̥śyāṁ mēdinyāṁ svārthaṁ dhanaṁ mā saṁcinuta|
20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor decay destroy, and where thieves do not break through and steal;
kintu yatra sthānē kīṭāḥ kalaṅkāśca kṣayaṁ na nayanti, caurāśca sandhiṁ karttayitvā cōrayituṁ na śaknuvanti, tādr̥śē svargē dhanaṁ sañcinuta|
21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
yasmāt yatra sthānē yuṣmāṁka dhanaṁ tatraiva khānē yuṣmākaṁ manāṁsi|
22 "The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light.
lōcanaṁ dēhasya pradīpakaṁ, tasmāt yadi tava lōcanaṁ prasannaṁ bhavati, tarhi tava kr̥tsnaṁ vapu rdīptiyuktaṁ bhaviṣyati|
23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness.
kintu lōcanē'prasannē tava kr̥tsnaṁ vapuḥ tamisrayuktaṁ bhaviṣyati| ataēva yā dīptistvayi vidyatē, sā yadi tamisrayuktā bhavati, tarhi tat tamisraṁ kiyan mahat|
24 "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon.
kōpi manujō dvau prabhū sēvituṁ na śaknōti, yasmād ēkaṁ saṁmanya tadanyaṁ na sammanyatē, yadvā ēkatra manō nidhāya tadanyam avamanyatē; tathā yūyamapīśvaraṁ lakṣmīñcētyubhē sēvituṁ na śaknutha|
25 Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
aparam ahaṁ yuṣmabhyaṁ tathyaṁ kathayāmi, kiṁ bhakṣiṣyāmaḥ? kiṁ pāsyāmaḥ? iti prāṇadhāraṇāya mā cintayata; kiṁ paridhāsyāmaḥ? iti kāyarakṣaṇāya na cintayata; bhakṣyāt prāṇā vasanāñca vapūṁṣi kiṁ śrēṣṭhāṇi na hi?
26 See the birds of the sky, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of much more value than they?
vihāyasō vihaṅgamān vilōkayata; tai rnōpyatē na kr̥tyatē bhāṇḍāgārē na sañcīyatē'pi; tathāpi yuṣmākaṁ svargasthaḥ pitā tēbhya āhāraṁ vitarati|
27 "And which of you, by being anxious, can add one cubit to his height?
yūyaṁ tēbhyaḥ kiṁ śrēṣṭhā na bhavatha? yuṣmākaṁ kaścit manujaḥ cintayan nijāyuṣaḥ kṣaṇamapi varddhayituṁ śaknōti?
28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They do not toil, neither do they spin,
aparaṁ vasanāya kutaścintayata? kṣētrōtpannāni puṣpāṇi kathaṁ varddhantē tadālōcayata| tāni tantūn nōtpādayanti kimapi kāryyaṁ na kurvvanti;
29 yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.
tathāpyahaṁ yuṣmān vadāmi, sulēmān tādr̥g aiśvaryyavānapi tatpuṣpamiva vibhūṣitō nāsīt|
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today exists, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, won't he much more clothe you, you of little faith?
tasmāt kṣadya vidyamānaṁ ścaḥ cullyāṁ nikṣēpsyatē tādr̥śaṁ yat kṣētrasthitaṁ kusumaṁ tat yadīścara itthaṁ bibhūṣayati, tarhi hē stōkapratyayinō yuṣmān kiṁ na paridhāpayiṣyati?
31 "Therefore do not be anxious, saying, 'What will we eat?', 'What will we drink?' or, 'With what will we be clothed?'
tasmāt asmābhiḥ kimatsyatē? kiñca pāyiṣyatē? kiṁ vā paridhāyiṣyatē, iti na cintayata|
32 For the unbelievers seek after all these things, for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.
yasmāt dēvārccakā apīti cēṣṭantē; ētēṣu dravyēṣu prayōjanamastīti yuṣmākaṁ svargasthaḥ pitā jānāti|
33 But seek first the Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
ataēva prathamata īśvarīyarājyaṁ dharmmañca cēṣṭadhvaṁ, tata ētāni vastūni yuṣmabhyaṁ pradāyiṣyantē|
34 Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
śvaḥ kr̥tē mā cintayata, śvaēva svayaṁ svamuddiśya cintayiṣyati; adyatanī yā cintā sādyakr̥tē pracuratarā|
