1 Timothy 5
1 Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brothers;
老人をとがめてはいけない。むしろ父親に対するように、話してあげなさい。若い男には兄弟に対するように、
2 the older women as mothers; the younger as sisters, in all purity.
年とった女には母親に対するように、若い女には、真に純潔な思いをもって、姉妹に対するように、勧告しなさい。
3 Honor widows who are widows indeed.
やもめについては、真にたよりのないやもめたちを、よくしてあげなさい。
4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety towards their own family, and to repay their parents, for this is acceptable in the sight of God.
やもめに子か孫かがある場合には、これらの者に、まず自分の家で孝養をつくし、親の恩に報いることを学ばせるべきである。それが、神のみこころにかなうことなのである。
5 Now she who is a widow indeed, and desolate, has her hope set on God, and continues in petitions and prayers night and day.
真にたよりのない、ひとり暮しのやもめは、望みを神において、日夜、たえず願いと祈とに専心するが、
6 But she who gives herself to pleasure is dead while she lives.
これに反して、みだらな生活をしているやもめは、生けるしかばねにすぎない。
7 Also command these things, so that they will be without fault.
これらのことを命じて、彼女たちを非難のない者としなさい。
8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever.
もしある人が、その親族を、ことに自分の家族をかえりみない場合には、その信仰を捨てたことになるのであって、不信者以上にわるい。
9 Let no one be enrolled as a widow under sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,
やもめとして登録さるべき者は、六十歳以下のものではなくて、ひとりの夫の妻であった者、
10 being approved by good works, if she has brought up children, if she has been hospitable to strangers, if she has washed the saints' feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, and if she has diligently followed every good work.
また子女をよく養育し、旅人をもてなし、聖徒の足を洗い、困っている人を助け、種々の善行に努めるなど、そのよいわざでひろく認められている者でなければならない。
11 But refuse younger widows, for whenever their passions lead them away from Christ, they desire to marry;
若いやもめは除外すべきである。彼女たちがキリストにそむいて気ままになると、結婚をしたがるようになり、
12 having condemnation, because they have rejected their first pledge.
初めの誓いを無視したという非難を受けねばならないからである。
13 Besides, they also learn to be idle, going about from house to house. Not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not.
その上、彼女たちはなまけていて、家々を遊び歩くことをおぼえ、なまけるばかりか、むだごとをしゃべって、いたずらに動きまわり、口にしてはならないことを言う。
14 I desire therefore that the younger widows marry, bear children, rule the household, and give no occasion to the adversary for reviling.
そういうわけだから、若いやもめは結婚して子を産み、家をおさめ、そして、反対者にそしられるすきを作らないようにしてほしい。
15 For already some have turned aside after Satan.
彼女たちのうちには、サタンのあとを追って道を踏みはずした者もある。
16 If any believing woman has widows, let her assist them, and do not let the church be burdened; that it might help those widows who are truly in need.
女の信者が家にやもめを持っている場合には、自分でそのやもめの世話をしてあげなさい。教会のやっかいになってはいけない。教会は、真にたよりのないやもめの世話をしなければならない。
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and in teaching.
よい指導をしている長老、特に宣教と教とのために労している長老は、二倍の尊敬を受けるにふさわしい者である。
18 For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox when it treads out the grain." And, "The laborer is worthy of his wages."
聖書は、「穀物をこなしている牛に、くつこをかけてはならない」また「働き人がその報酬を受けるのは当然である」と言っている。
19 Do not receive an accusation against an elder, except at the word of two or three witnesses.
長老に対する訴訟は、ふたりか三人の証人がない場合には、受理してはならない。
20 Those who sin, reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.
罪を犯した者に対しては、ほかの人々も恐れをいだくに至るために、すべての人の前でその罪をとがむべきである。
21 I command you in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the chosen angels, that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.
わたしは、神とキリスト・イエスと選ばれた御使たちとの前で、おごそかにあなたに命じる。これらのことを偏見なしに守り、何事についても、不公平な仕方をしてはならない。
22 Do not ordain anyone hastily, nor participate in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.
軽々しく人に手をおいてはならない。また、ほかの人の罪に加わってはいけない。自分をきよく守りなさい。
23 Be no longer a drinker of water only, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities.
（これからは、水ばかりを飲まないで、胃のため、また、たびたびのいたみを和らげるために、少量のぶどう酒を用いなさい。）
24 The sins of some people are obvious, going before them to judgment, but those of others show up later.
ある人の罪は明白であって、すぐ裁判にかけられるが、ほかの人の罪は、あとになってわかって来る。
25 In the same way also there are good works that are obvious, and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.
それと同じく、良いわざもすぐ明らかになり、そうならない場合でも、隠れていることはあり得ない。
