1 Peter 3
1 In like manner, wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; so that, even if any do not obey the word, they may be won by the behavior of their wives without a word;
同じように、妻たる者よ。夫に仕えなさい。そうすれば、たとい御言に従わない夫であっても、
2 seeing your pure behavior in fear.
あなたがたのうやうやしく清い行いを見て、その妻の無言の行いによって、救に入れられるようになるであろう。
3 Let your beauty be not just the outward adorning of braiding the hair, and of wearing jewels of gold, or of putting on fine clothing;
あなたがたは、髪を編み、金の飾りをつけ、服装をととのえるような外面の飾りではなく、
4 but in the hidden person of the heart, in the incorruptible adornment of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God very precious.
かくれた内なる人、柔和で、しとやかな霊という朽ちることのない飾りを、身につけるべきである。これこそ、神のみまえに、きわめて尊いものである。
5 For this is how the holy women before, who hoped in God also adorned themselves, being in subjection to their own husbands:
むかし、神を仰ぎ望んでいた聖なる女たちも、このように身を飾って、その夫に仕えたのである。
6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord, whose children you now are, if you do well, and are not put in fear by any terror.
たとえば、サラはアブラハムに仕えて、彼を主と呼んだ。あなたがたも、何事にもおびえ臆することなく善を行えば、サラの娘たちとなるのである。
7 You husbands, in like manner, live with your wives according to knowledge, giving honor to the woman, as to the weaker vessel, as being also joint heirs of the grace of life; that your prayers may not be hindered.
夫たる者よ。あなたがたも同じように、女は自分よりも弱い器であることを認めて、知識に従って妻と共に住み、いのちの恵みを共どもに受け継ぐ者として、尊びなさい。それは、あなたがたの祈が妨げられないためである。
8 Finally, be all like-minded, compassionate, loving as brothers, tenderhearted, humble,
最後に言う。あなたがたは皆、心をひとつにし、同情し合い、兄弟愛をもち、あわれみ深くあり、謙虚でありなさい。
9 not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but instead blessing; because to this were you called, that you may inherit a blessing.
悪をもって悪に報いず、悪口をもって悪口に報いず、かえって、祝福をもって報いなさい。あなたがたが召されたのは、祝福を受け継ぐためなのである。
10 For, "He who would love life, and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil, and his lips from speaking deceit.
「いのちを愛し、さいわいな日々を過ごそうと願う人は、舌を制して悪を言わず、くちびるを閉じて偽りを語らず、
11 Let him turn away from evil, and do good. Let him seek peace, and pursue it.
悪を避けて善を行い、平和を求めて、これを追え。
12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears open to their prayer; but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil."
主の目は義人たちに注がれ、主の耳は彼らの祈にかたむく。しかし主の御顔は、悪を行う者に対して向かう」。
13 Now who is he who will harm you, if you become zealous of that which is good?
そこで、もしあなたがたが善に熱心であれば、だれが、あなたがたに危害を加えようか。
14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness' sake, you are blessed. "And do not fear what they fear, nor be troubled."
しかし、万一義のために苦しむようなことがあっても、あなたがたはさいわいである。彼らを恐れたり、心を乱したりしてはならない。
15 But sanctify in your hearts Christ as Lord; and always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with humility and fear:
ただ、心の中でキリストを主とあがめなさい。また、あなたがたのうちにある望みについて説明を求める人には、いつでも弁明のできる用意をしていなさい。
16 having a good conscience; so that when they speak evil against you, they may be put to shame who slander your good manner of life in Christ.
しかし、やさしく、慎み深く、明らかな良心をもって、弁明しなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたがキリストにあって営んでいる良い生活をそしる人々も、そのようにののしったことを恥じいるであろう。
17 For it is better, if it is God's will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil.
善をおこなって苦しむことはそれが神の御旨であれば悪をおこなって苦しむよりも、まさっている。
18 Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
キリストも、あなたがたを神に近づけようとして、自らは義なるかたであるのに、不義なる人々のために、ひとたび罪のゆえに死なれた。ただし、肉においては殺されたが、霊においては生かされたのである。
19 in which he also went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison,
こうして、彼は獄に捕われている霊どものところに下って行き、宣べ伝えることをされた。
20 who before were disobedient, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the box-shaped ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved by means of water.
これらの霊というのは、むかしノアの箱舟が造られていた間、神が寛容をもって待っておられたのに従わなかった者どものことである。その箱舟に乗り込み、水を経て救われたのは、わずかに八名だけであった。
21 This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you—not the removal of dirt from the body, but an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
この水はバプテスマを象徴するものであって、今やあなたがたをも救うのである。それは、イエス・キリストの復活によるのであって、からだの汚れを除くことではなく、明らかな良心を神に願い求めることである。
22 who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him.
キリストは天に上って神の右に座し、天使たちともろもろの権威、権力を従えておられるのである。
