< Matthew 27 >

1 Now when morning had come, all the chief cohanim and the elders of the people took counsel against Yeshua to put him to death:
prabhAtE jAtE pradhAnayAjakalOkaprAcInA yIzuM hantuM tatpratikUlaM mantrayitvA
2 and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him to Pilate, the governor.
taM badvvA nItvA pantIyapIlAtAkhyAdhipE samarpayAmAsuH|
3 Then Judah, who betrayed him, when he saw that Yeshua was condemned, felt remorse, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief cohanim and elders,
tatO yIzOH parakarEvvarpayitA yihUdAstatprANAdaNPAjnjAM viditvA santaptamanAH pradhAnayAjakalOkaprAcInAnAM samakSaM tAstrIMzanmudrAH pratidAyAvAdIt,
4 saying, "I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it."
EtannirAgOnaraprANaparakarArpaNAt kaluSaM kRtavAnahaM| tadA ta uditavantaH, tEnAsmAkaM kiM? tvayA tad budhyatAm|
5 He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary, and departed. He went away and hanged himself.
tatO yihUdA mandiramadhyE tA mudrA nikSipya prasthitavAn itvA ca svayamAtmAnamudbabandha|
6 The chief cohanim took the pieces of silver, and said, "It's not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood."
pazcAt pradhAnayAjakAstA mudrA AdAya kathitavantaH, EtA mudrAH zONitamUlyaM tasmAd bhANPAgArE na nidhAtavyAH|
7 They took counsel, and bought the potter's field with them, to bury strangers in.
anantaraM tE mantrayitvA vidEzinAM zmazAnasthAnAya tAbhiH kulAlasya kSEtramakrINan|
8 Therefore that field was called "The Field of Blood" to this day.
atO'dyApi tatsthAnaM raktakSEtraM vadanti|
9 Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, "They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him upon whom a price had been set, whom some of the children of Israel priced,
itthaM sati isrAyElIyasantAnai ryasya mUlyaM nirupitaM, tasya triMzanmudrAmAnaM mUlyaM
10 and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me."
mAM prati paramEzvarasyAdEzAt tEbhya AdIyata, tEna ca kulAlasya kSEtraM krItamiti yadvacanaM yirimiyabhaviSyadvAdinA prOktaM tat tadAsidhyat|
11 Now Yeshua stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Yeshua said to him, "You say so."
anantaraM yIzau tadadhipatEH sammukha upatiSThati sa taM papraccha, tvaM kiM yihUdIyAnAM rAjA? tadA yIzustamavadat, tvaM satyamuktavAn|
12 When he was accused by the chief cohanim and elders, he answered nothing.
kintu pradhAnayAjakaprAcInairabhiyuktEna tEna kimapi na pratyavAdi|
13 Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?"
tataH pIlAtEna sa uditaH, imE tvatpratikUlataH kati kati sAkSyaM dadati, tat tvaM na zRNOSi?
14 He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.
tathApi sa tESAmEkasyApi vacasa uttaraM nOditavAn; tEna sO'dhipati rmahAcitraM vidAmAsa|
15 Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner, whom they desired.
anyacca tanmahakAlE'dhipatErEtAdRzI rAtirAsIt, prajA yaM kanjcana bandhinaM yAcantE, tamEva sa mOcayatIti|
16 They had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.
tadAnIM barabbAnAmA kazcit khyAtabandhyAsIt|
17 When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Yeshua, who is called Messiah?"
tataH pIlAtastatra militAn lOkAn apRcchat, ESa barabbA bandhI khrISTavikhyAtO yIzuzcaitayOH kaM mOcayiSyAmi? yuSmAkaM kimIpsitaM?
18 For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up.
tairIrSyayA sa samarpita iti sa jnjAtavAn|
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him."
aparaM vicArAsanOpavEzanakAlE pIlAtasya patnI bhRtyaM prahitya tasmai kathayAmAsa, taM dhArmmikamanujaM prati tvayA kimapi na karttavyaM; yasmAt tatkRtE'dyAhaM svapnE prabhUtakaSTamalabhE|
20 Now the chief cohanim and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas, and destroy Yeshua.
anantaraM pradhAnayAjakaprAcInA barabbAM yAcitvAdAtuM yIzunjca hantuM sakalalOkAn prAvarttayan|
21 But the governor answered them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas."
tatO'dhipatistAn pRSTavAn, EtayOH kamahaM mOcayiSyAmi? yuSmAkaM kEcchA? tE prOcu rbarabbAM|
22 Pilate said to them, "What then should I do with Yeshua, who is called the Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified."
tadA pIlAtaH papraccha, tarhi yaM khrISTaM vadanti, taM yIzuM kiM kariSyAmi? sarvvE kathayAmAsuH, sa kruzEna vidhyatAM|
23 But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?" But they shouted all the louder, saying, "Let him be crucified."
tatO'dhipatiravAdIt, kutaH? kiM tEnAparAddhaM? kintu tE punarucai rjagaduH, sa kruzEna vidhyatAM|
24 So Pilate, seeing that nothing was being gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, took water and he washed his hands before the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man. You see to it."
tadA nijavAkyamagrAhyamabhUt, kalahazcApyabhUt, pIlAta iti vilOkya lOkAnAM samakSaM tOyamAdAya karau prakSAlyAvOcat, Etasya dhArmmikamanuSyasya zONitapAtE nirdOSO'haM, yuSmAbhirEva tad budhyatAM|
25 All the people answered, "May his blood be on us, and on our children."
tadA sarvvAH prajAH pratyavOcan, tasya zONitapAtAparAdhO'smAkam asmatsantAnAnAnjcOpari bhavatu|
26 Then he released to them Barabbas, but Yeshua he flogged and delivered to be crucified.
tataH sa tESAM samIpE barabbAM mOcayAmAsa yIzuntu kaSAbhirAhatya kruzEna vEdhituM samarpayAmAsa|
27 Then the governor's soldiers took Yeshua into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him.
anantaram adhipatEH sEnA adhipatE rgRhaM yIzumAnIya tasya samIpE sEnAsamUhaM saMjagRhuH|
28 They stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him.
tatastE tasya vasanaM mOcayitvA kRSNalOhitavarNavasanaM paridhApayAmAsuH
29 They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, "Greetings, King of the Jews."
kaNTakAnAM mukuTaM nirmmAya tacchirasi daduH, tasya dakSiNakarE vEtramEkaM dattvA tasya sammukhE jAnUni pAtayitvA, hE yihUdIyAnAM rAjan, tubhyaM nama ityuktvA taM tirazcakruH,
30 They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.
tatastasya gAtrE niSThIvaM datvA tEna vEtrENa zira AjaghnuH|
31 When they had mocked him, they took the robe off of him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
itthaM taM tiraskRtya tad vasanaM mOcayitvA punarnijavasanaM paridhApayAnjcakruH, taM kruzEna vEdhituM nItavantaH|
32 As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Shim'on by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross.
pazcAttE bahirbhUya kurINIyaM zimOnnAmakamEkaM vilOkya kruzaM vOPhuM tamAdadirE|
33 They came to a place called "Golgotha," that is to say, "The place of a skull."
anantaraM gulgaltAm arthAt ziraskapAlanAmakasthAnamu pasthAya tE yIzavE pittamizritAmlarasaM pAtuM daduH,
34 They gave him wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.
kintu sa tamAsvAdya na papau|
35 When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among themselves, casting a lot, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: 'They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast a lot.'
tadAnIM tE taM kruzEna saMvidhya tasya vasanAni guTikApAtEna vibhajya jagRhuH, tasmAt, vibhajantE'dharIyaM mE tE manuSyAH parasparaM| maduttarIyavastrArthaM guTikAM pAtayanti ca||yadEtadvacanaM bhaviSyadvAdibhiruktamAsIt, tadA tad asidhyat,
36 And they sat and watched him there.
pazcAt tE tatrOpavizya tadrakSaNakarvvaNi niyuktAstasthuH|
37 They set up over his head the accusation against him written, "THIS IS YESHUA, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
aparam ESa yihUdIyAnAM rAjA yIzurityapavAdalipipatraM tacchirasa UrdvvE yOjayAmAsuH|
38 Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.
tatastasya vAmE dakSiNE ca dvau cairau tEna sAkaM kruzEna vividhuH|
39 Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads,
tadA pAnthA nijazirO lAPayitvA taM nindantO jagaduH,
40 and saying, "You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross."
hE Izvaramandirabhanjjaka dinatrayE tannirmmAtaH svaM rakSa, cEttvamIzvarasutastarhi kruzAdavarOha|
41 Likewise the chief cohanim also mocking, with the scribes, and the elders, said,
pradhAnayAjakAdhyApakaprAcInAzca tathA tiraskRtya jagaduH,
42 "He saved others, but he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.
sO'nyajanAnAvat, kintu svamavituM na zaknOti| yadIsrAyElO rAjA bhavEt, tarhIdAnImEva kruzAdavarOhatu, tEna taM vayaM pratyESyAmaH|
43 He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
sa IzvarE pratyAzAmakarOt, yadIzvarastasmin santuSTastarhIdAnImEva tamavEt, yataH sa uktavAn ahamIzvarasutaH|
44 The robbers also who were crucified with him insulted him in the same way.
yau stEnau sAkaM tEna kruzEna viddhau tau tadvadEva taM ninindatuH|
45 Now from noon until three in the afternoon there was darkness over all the land.
tadA dvitIyayAmAt tRtIyayAmaM yAvat sarvvadEzE tamiraM babhUva,
46 Then at about three in the afternoon Yeshua called out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lema shabachthani?" That is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
tRtIyayAmE "ElI ElI lAmA zivaktanI", arthAt madIzvara madIzvara kutO mAmatyAkSIH? yIzuruccairiti jagAda|
47 Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, "This man is calling Elijah."
tadA tatra sthitAH kEcit tat zrutvA babhASirE, ayam EliyamAhUyati|
48 Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.
tESAM madhyAd EkaH zIghraM gatvA spanjjaM gRhItvA tatrAmlarasaM dattvA nalEna pAtuM tasmai dadau|
49 The rest said, "Let him be. Let us see whether Elijah comes to save him."
itarE'kathayan tiSThata, taM rakSitum Eliya AyAti navEti pazyAmaH|
50 And Yeshua cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.
yIzuH punarucairAhUya prANAn jahau|
51 And look, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split.
tatO mandirasya vicchEdavasanam UrdvvAdadhO yAvat chidyamAnaM dvidhAbhavat,
52 The tombs were opened, and the bodies of many kadoshim who had fallen asleep were raised;
bhUmizcakampE bhUdharOvyadIryyata ca| zmazAnE muktE bhUripuNyavatAM suptadEhA udatiSThan,
53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many.
zmazAnAd vahirbhUya tadutthAnAt paraM puNyapuraM gatvA bahujanAn darzayAmAsuH|
54 Now the centurion, and those who were with him watching Yeshua, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God."
yIzurakSaNAya niyuktaH zatasEnApatistatsagginazca tAdRzIM bhUkampAdighaTanAM dRSTvA bhItA avadan, ESa IzvaraputrO bhavati|
55 Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Yeshua from Galil, serving him.
yA bahuyOSitO yIzuM sEvamAnA gAlIlastatpazcAdAgatAstAsAM madhyE
56 Among them were Miriam from Magdala, Miriam the mother of Jacob and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zavdai.
magdalInI mariyam yAkUbyOzyO rmAtA yA mariyam sibadiyaputrayO rmAtA ca yOSita EtA dUrE tiSThantyO dadRzuH|
57 When evening had come, a rich man from Arimateh, named Joseph, who himself was also Yeshua's talmid came.
sandhyAyAM satyam arimathiyAnagarasya yUSaphnAmA dhanI manujO yIzOH ziSyatvAt
58 This man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Yeshua. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up.
pIlAtasya samIpaM gatvA yIzOH kAyaM yayAcE, tEna pIlAtaH kAyaM dAtum AdidEza|
59 Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
yUSaph tatkAyaM nItvA zucivastrENAcchAdya
60 and placed it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the rock, and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed.
svArthaM zailE yat zmazAnaM cakhAna, tanmadhyE tatkAyaM nidhAya tasya dvAri vRhatpASANaM dadau|
61 Miriam from Magdala was there, and the other Miriam, sitting opposite the tomb.
kintu magdalInI mariyam anyamariyam EtE striyau tatra zmazAnasammukha upavivizatuH|
62 Now on the next day, which was the day after the Preparation Day, the chief cohanim and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,
tadanantaraM nistArOtsavasyAyOjanadinAt parE'hani pradhAnayAjakAH phirUzinazca militvA pIlAtamupAgatyAkathayan,
63 saying, "Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: 'After three days I will rise again.'
hE mahEccha sa pratArakO jIvana akathayat, dinatrayAt paraM zmazAnAdutthAsyAmi tadvAkyaM smarAmO vayaM;
64 Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his talmidim come and steal him away, and tell the people, 'He is risen from the dead;' and the last deception will be worse than the first."
tasmAt tRtIyadinaM yAvat tat zmazAnaM rakSitumAdizatu, nOcEt tacchiSyA yAminyAmAgatya taM hRtvA lOkAn vadiSyanti, sa zmazAnAdudatiSThat, tathA sati prathamabhrAntEH zESIyabhrAnti rmahatI bhaviSyati|
65 Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can."
tadA pIlAta avAdIt, yuSmAkaM samIpE rakSigaNa AstE, yUyaM gatvA yathA sAdhyaM rakSayata|
66 So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.
tatastE gatvA taddUrapASANaM mudrAgkitaM kRtvA rakSigaNaM niyOjya zmazAnaM rakSayAmAsuH|
