Luke 23
1 The whole company of them rose up and brought him before Pilate.
tataḥ sabhāsthāḥ sarvvalōkā utthāya taṁ pīlātasammukhaṁ nītvāprōdya vaktumārēbhirē,
2 They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king."
svamabhiṣiktaṁ rājānaṁ vadantaṁ kaimararājāya karadānaṁ niṣēdhantaṁ rājyaviparyyayaṁ kurttuṁ pravarttamānam ēna prāptā vayaṁ|
3 Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "You say so."
tadā pīlātastaṁ pr̥ṣṭavān tvaṁ kiṁ yihūdīyānāṁ rājā? sa pratyuvāca tvaṁ satyamuktavān|
4 Pilate said to the chief cohanim and the crowds, "I find no basis for a charge against this man."
tadā pīlātaḥ pradhānayājakādilōkān jagād, ahamētasya kamapyaparādhaṁ nāptavān|
5 But they insisted, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galil even to this place."
tatastē punaḥ sāhaminō bhūtvāvadan, ēṣa gālīla ētatsthānaparyyantē sarvvasmin yihūdādēśē sarvvāllōkānupadiśya kupravr̥ttiṁ grāhītavān|
6 But when Pilate heard it, he asked if the man was a Galilean.
tadā pīlātō gālīlapradēśasya nāma śrutvā papraccha, kimayaṁ gālīlīyō lōkaḥ?
7 When he found out that he was in Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.
tataḥ sa gālīlpradēśīyahērōdrājasya tadā sthitēstasya samīpē yīśuṁ prēṣayāmāsa|
8 Now when Herod saw Yeshua, he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him. He hoped to see some miracle done by him.
tadā hērōd yīśuṁ vilōkya santutōṣa, yataḥ sa tasya bahuvr̥ttāntaśravaṇāt tasya kiñicadāścaryyakarmma paśyati ityāśāṁ kr̥tvā bahukālamārabhya taṁ draṣṭuṁ prayāsaṁ kr̥tavān|
9 He questioned him with many words, but he gave no answers.
tasmāt taṁ bahukathāḥ papraccha kintu sa tasya kasyāpi vākyasya pratyuttaraṁ nōvāca|
10 The chief cohanim and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing him.
atha pradhānayājakā adhyāpakāśca prōttiṣṭhantaḥ sāhasēna tamapavadituṁ prārēbhirē|
11 Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Dressing him in luxurious clothing, they sent him back to Pilate.
hērōd tasya sēnāgaṇaśca tamavajñāya upahāsatvēna rājavastraṁ paridhāpya punaḥ pīlātaṁ prati taṁ prāhiṇōt|
12 Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before that they were enemies with each other.
pūrvvaṁ hērōdpīlātayōḥ parasparaṁ vairabhāva āsīt kintu taddinē dvayō rmēlanaṁ jātam|
13 Pilate called together the chief cohanim and the rulers and the people,
paścāt pīlātaḥ pradhānayājakān śāsakān lōkāṁśca yugapadāhūya babhāṣē,
14 and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one that subverts the people, and see, I have examined him before you, and found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him.
rājyaviparyyayakārakōyam ityuktvā manuṣyamēnaṁ mama nikaṭamānaiṣṭa kintu paśyata yuṣmākaṁ samakṣam asya vicāraṁ kr̥tvāpi prōktāpavādānurūpēṇāsya kōpyaparādhaḥ sapramāṇō na jātaḥ,
15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us, and see, nothing worthy of death has been done by him.
yūyañca hērōdaḥ sannidhau prēṣitā mayā tatrāsya kōpyaparādhastēnāpi na prāptaḥ|paśyatānēna vadhahētukaṁ kimapi nāparāddhaṁ|
16 I will therefore chastise him and release him."
tasmādēnaṁ tāḍayitvā vihāsyāmi|
17 (Now he had to release one prisoner to them at the feast.)
tatrōtsavē tēṣāmēkō mōcayitavyaḥ|
18 But they all shouted out together, saying, "Away with this man. Release to us Barabbas"
iti hētōstē prōccairēkadā prōcuḥ, ēnaṁ dūrīkr̥tya barabbānāmānaṁ mōcaya|
19 (one who was thrown into prison for a certain revolt in the city, and for murder.)
sa barabbā nagara upaplavavadhāparādhābhyāṁ kārāyāṁ baddha āsīt|
20 Then Pilate spoke to them again, wanting to release Yeshua,
kintu pīlātō yīśuṁ mōcayituṁ vāñchan punastānuvāca|
21 but they shouted, saying, "Crucify. Crucify him."
tathāpyēnaṁ kruśē vyadha kruśē vyadhēti vadantastē ruruvuḥ|
22 He said to them the third time, "Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no capital crime in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him."
tataḥ sa tr̥tīyavāraṁ jagāda kutaḥ? sa kiṁ karmma kr̥tavān? nāhamasya kamapi vadhāparādhaṁ prāptaḥ kēvalaṁ tāḍayitvāmuṁ tyajāmi|
23 But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. And their voices, and those of the chief cohanim, prevailed.
tathāpi tē punarēnaṁ kruśē vyadha ityuktvā prōccairdr̥ḍhaṁ prārthayāñcakrirē;
24 Pilate decreed that what they asked for should be done.
tataḥ pradhānayājakādīnāṁ kalaravē prabalē sati tēṣāṁ prārthanārūpaṁ karttuṁ pīlāta ādidēśa|
25 He released him who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Yeshua up to their will.
rājadrōhavadhayōraparādhēna kārāsthaṁ yaṁ janaṁ tē yayācirē taṁ mōcayitvā yīśuṁ tēṣāmicchāyāṁ samārpayat|
26 When they led him away, they grabbed one Shim'on of Cyrene, coming from the country, and placed on him the cross, to carry it after Yeshua.
atha tē yīśuṁ gr̥hītvā yānti, ētarhi grāmādāgataṁ śimōnanāmānaṁ kurīṇīyaṁ janaṁ dhr̥tvā yīśōḥ paścānnētuṁ tasya skandhē kruśamarpayāmāsuḥ|
27 A large crowd of the people followed him, including women who also mourned and lamented him.
tatō lōkāraṇyamadhyē bahustriyō rudatyō vilapantyaśca yīśōḥ paścād yayuḥ|
28 But Yeshua, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
kintu sa vyāghuṭya tā uvāca, hē yirūśālamō nāryyō yuyaṁ madarthaṁ na ruditvā svārthaṁ svāpatyārthañca ruditi;
29 For look, the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'
paśyata yaḥ kadāpi garbhavatyō nābhavan stanyañca nāpāyayan tādr̥śī rvandhyā yadā dhanyā vakṣyanti sa kāla āyāti|
30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us,' and to the hills, 'Cover us.'
tadā hē śailā asmākamupari patata, hē upaśailā asmānācchādayata kathāmīdr̥śīṁ lōkā vakṣyanti|
31 For if they do these things in the green tree, what will be done in the dry?"
yataḥ satējasi śākhini cēdētad ghaṭatē tarhi śuṣkaśākhini kiṁ na ghaṭiṣyatē?
32 There were also others, two criminals, led with him to be put to death.
tadā tē hantuṁ dvāvaparādhinau tēna sārddhaṁ ninyuḥ|
33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
aparaṁ śiraḥkapālanāmakasthānaṁ prāpya taṁ kruśē vividhuḥ; taddvayōraparādhinōrēkaṁ tasya dakṣiṇō tadanyaṁ vāmē kruśē vividhuḥ|
34 And Yeshua said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.
tadā yīśurakathayat, hē pitarētān kṣamasva yata ētē yat karmma kurvvanti tan na viduḥ; paścāttē guṭikāpātaṁ kr̥tvā tasya vastrāṇi vibhajya jagr̥huḥ|
35 The people stood watching. The rulers also scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Messiah of God, his Chosen One."
tatra lōkasaṁghastiṣṭhan dadarśa; tē tēṣāṁ śāsakāśca tamupahasya jagaduḥ, ēṣa itarān rakṣitavān yadīśvarēṇābhirucitō 'bhiṣiktastrātā bhavati tarhi svamadhunā rakṣatu|
36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar,
tadanyaḥ sēnāgaṇā ētya tasmai amlarasaṁ datvā parihasya prōvāca,
37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself."
cēttvaṁ yihūdīyānāṁ rājāsi tarhi svaṁ rakṣa|
38 An inscription was also written above him: "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."
yihūdīyānāṁ rājēti vākyaṁ yūnānīyarōmīyēbrīyākṣarai rlikhitaṁ tacchirasa ūrddhvē'sthāpyata|
39 One of the criminals who hung there insulted him, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."
tadōbhayapārśvayō rviddhau yāvaparādhinau tayōrēkastaṁ vinindya babhāṣē, cēttvam abhiṣiktōsi tarhi svamāvāñca rakṣa|
40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?
kintvanyastaṁ tarjayitvāvadat, īśvarāttava kiñcidapi bhayaṁ nāsti kiṁ? tvamapi samānadaṇḍōsi,
41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."
yōgyapātrē āvāṁ svasvakarmmaṇāṁ samucitaphalaṁ prāpnuvaḥ kintvanēna kimapi nāparāddhaṁ|
42 And he said, "Yeshua, remember me when you come into your Kingdom."
atha sa yīśuṁ jagāda hē prabhē bhavān svarājyapravēśakālē māṁ smaratu|
43 And he said to him, "Assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
tadā yīśuḥ kathitavān tvāṁ yathārthaṁ vadāmi tvamadyaiva mayā sārddhaṁ paralōkasya sukhasthānaṁ prāpsyasi|
44 And it was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
aparañca dvitīyayāmāt tr̥tīyayāmaparyyantaṁ ravēstējasōntarhitatvāt sarvvadēśō'ndhakārēṇāvr̥tō
45 for the sun's light failed. And the veil of the temple was torn in two.
mandirasya yavanikā ca chidyamānā dvidhā babhūva|
46 And Yeshua, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." Having said this, he breathed his last.
tatō yīśuruccairuvāca, hē pita rmamātmānaṁ tava karē samarpayē, ityuktvā sa prāṇān jahau|
47 When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous man."
tadaitā ghaṭanā dr̥ṣṭvā śatasēnāpatirīśvaraṁ dhanyamuktvā kathitavān ayaṁ nitāntaṁ sādhumanuṣya āsīt|
48 All the crowds that came together to see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned home beating their breasts.
atha yāvantō lōkā draṣṭum āgatāstē tā ghaṭanā dr̥ṣṭvā vakṣaḥsu karāghātaṁ kr̥tvā vyācuṭya gatāḥ|
49 All his acquaintances, and the women who followed with him from Galil, stood at a distance, watching these things.
yīśō rjñātayō yā yā yōṣitaśca gālīlastēna sārddhamāyātāstā api dūrē sthitvā tat sarvvaṁ dadr̥śuḥ|
50 And look, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous man
tadā yihūdīyānāṁ mantraṇāṁ kriyāñcāsammanyamāna īśvarasya rājatvam apēkṣamāṇō
51 (he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from Arimateh, a city of the Judeans, who was also waiting for the Kingdom of God:
yihūdidēśīyō 'rimathīyanagarīyō yūṣaphnāmā mantrī bhadrō dhārmmikaśca pumān
52 this man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Yeshua.
pīlātāntikaṁ gatvā yīśō rdēhaṁ yayācē|
53 He took it down, and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and placed him in a tomb that was cut in stone, where no one had ever been placed.
paścād vapuravarōhya vāsasā saṁvēṣṭya yatra kōpi mānuṣō nāsthāpyata tasmin śailē svātē śmaśānē tadasthāpayat|
54 It was the day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near.
taddinamāyōjanīyaṁ dinaṁ viśrāmavāraśca samīpaḥ|
55 The women, who had come with him out of Galil, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how his body was placed.
aparaṁ yīśunā sārddhaṁ gālīla āgatā yōṣitaḥ paścāditvā śmaśānē tatra yathā vapuḥ sthāpitaṁ tacca dr̥ṣṭvā
56 They returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
vyāghuṭya sugandhidravyatailāni kr̥tvā vidhivad viśrāmavārē viśrāmaṁ cakruḥ|
