Yochanan 19
1 So Pilate then took Yeshua, and flogged him.
pīlātō yīśum ānīya kaśayā prāhārayat|
2 The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown, and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment.
paścāt sēnāgaṇaḥ kaṇṭakanirmmitaṁ mukuṭaṁ tasya mastakē samarpya vārttākīvarṇaṁ rājaparicchadaṁ paridhāpya,
3 And they kept coming up to him and saying, "Greetings, King of the Jews." and they struck him with their hands.
hē yihūdīyānāṁ rājan namaskāra ityuktvā taṁ capēṭēnāhantum ārabhata|
4 Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, "Look, I am bringing him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him."
tadā pīlātaḥ punarapi bahirgatvā lōkān avadat, asya kamapyaparādhaṁ na labhē'haṁ, paśyata tad yuṣmān jñāpayituṁ yuṣmākaṁ sannidhau bahirēnam ānayāmi|
5 Then Yeshua came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. And he said to them, "Look, here is the man."
tataḥ paraṁ yīśuḥ kaṇṭakamukuṭavān vārttākīvarṇavasanavāṁśca bahirāgacchat| tataḥ pīlāta uktavān ēnaṁ manuṣyaṁ paśyata|
6 When therefore the chief cohanim and the officers saw him, they shouted, saying, "Crucify. Crucify." Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him."
tadā pradhānayājakāḥ padātayaśca taṁ dr̥ṣṭvā, ēnaṁ kruśē vidha, ēnaṁ kruśē vidha, ityuktvā ravituṁ ārabhanta| tataḥ pīlātaḥ kathitavān yūyaṁ svayam ēnaṁ nītvā kruśē vidhata, aham ētasya kamapyaparādhaṁ na prāptavān|
7 The Jewish leaders answered him, "We have a law, and by that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God."
yihūdīyāḥ pratyavadan asmākaṁ yā vyavasthāstē tadanusārēṇāsya prāṇahananam ucitaṁ yatōyaṁ svam īśvarasya putramavadat|
8 When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid.
pīlāta imāṁ kathāṁ śrutvā mahātrāsayuktaḥ
9 He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Yeshua, "Where are you from?" But Yeshua gave him no answer.
san punarapi rājagr̥ha āgatya yīśuṁ pr̥ṣṭavān tvaṁ kutratyō lōkaḥ? kintu yīśastasya kimapi pratyuttaraṁ nāvadat|
10 Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you not speaking to me? Do you not know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?"
tataḥ pīlāt kathitavāna tvaṁ kiṁ mayā sārddhaṁ na saṁlapiṣyasi? tvāṁ kruśē vēdhituṁ vā mōcayituṁ śakti rmamāstē iti kiṁ tvaṁ na jānāsi? tadā yīśuḥ pratyavadad īśvarēṇādaṁ mamōpari tava kimapyadhipatitvaṁ na vidyatē, tathāpi yō janō māṁ tava hastē samārpayat tasya mahāpātakaṁ jātam|
11 Yeshua answered, "You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin."
tadā yīśuḥ pratyavadad īśvarēṇādattaṁ mamōpari tava kimapyadhipatitvaṁ na vidyatē, tathāpi yō janō māṁ tava hastē samārpayat tasya mahāpātakaṁ jātam|
12 At this, Pilate was seeking to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, saying, "If you release this man, you are not Caesar's friend. Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."
tadārabhya pīlātastaṁ mōcayituṁ cēṣṭitavān kintu yihūdīyā ruvantō vyāharan yadīmaṁ mānavaṁ tyajasi tarhi tvaṁ kaisarasya mitraṁ na bhavasi, yō janaḥ svaṁ rājānaṁ vakti saēva kaimarasya viruddhāṁ kathāṁ kathayati|
13 When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Yeshua out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called "The Pavement," but in Hebrew, "Gabbatha."
ētāṁ kathāṁ śrutvā pīlātō yīśuṁ bahirānīya nistārōtsavasya āsādanadinasya dvitīyapraharāt pūrvvaṁ prastarabandhananāmni sthānē 'rthāt ibrīyabhāṣayā yad gabbithā kathyatē tasmin sthānē vicārāsana upāviśat|
14 Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, at about noon. He said to the Jewish leaders, "Look, here is your King."
anantaraṁ pīlātō yihūdīyān avadat, yuṣmākaṁ rājānaṁ paśyata|
15 They shouted, "Away with him. Away with him. Crucify him." Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief cohanim answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
kintu ēnaṁ dūrīkuru, ēnaṁ dūrīkuru, ēnaṁ kruśē vidha, iti kathāṁ kathayitvā tē ravitum ārabhanta; tadā pīlātaḥ kathitavān yuṣmākaṁ rājānaṁ kiṁ kruśē vēdhiṣyāmi? pradhānayājakā uttaram avadan kaisaraṁ vinā kōpi rājāsmākaṁ nāsti|
16 So then he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Yeshua.
tataḥ pīlātō yīśuṁ kruśē vēdhituṁ tēṣāṁ hastēṣu samārpayat, tatastē taṁ dhr̥tvā nītavantaḥ|
17 And he went out, carrying the cross himself, to the place called "The Place of a Skull," which is called in Hebrew, "Golgotha,"
tataḥ paraṁ yīśuḥ kruśaṁ vahan śiraḥkapālam arthād yad ibrīyabhāṣayā gulgaltāṁ vadanti tasmin sthāna upasthitaḥ|
18 where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Yeshua in the middle.
tatastē madhyasthānē taṁ tasyōbhayapārśvē dvāvaparau kruśē'vidhan|
19 Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, "YESHUA THE NAZOREAN, THE KING OF THE JEWS."
aparam ēṣa yihūdīyānāṁ rājā nāsaratīyayīśuḥ, iti vijñāpanaṁ likhitvā pīlātastasya kruśōpari samayōjayat|
20 Therefore many Jews read this title, for the place where Yeshua was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek.
sā lipiḥ ibrīyayūnānīyarōmīyabhāṣābhi rlikhitā; yīśōḥ kruśavēdhanasthānaṁ nagarasya samīpaṁ, tasmād bahavō yihūdīyāstāṁ paṭhitum ārabhanta|
21 The chief cohanim of the Jewish people therefore said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'he said, I am King of the Jews.'"
yihūdīyānāṁ pradhānayājakāḥ pīlātamiti nyavēdayan yihūdīyānāṁ rājēti vākyaṁ na kintu ēṣa svaṁ yihūdīyānāṁ rājānam avadad itthaṁ likhatu|
22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
tataḥ pīlāta uttaraṁ dattavān yallēkhanīyaṁ tallikhitavān|
23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Yeshua, took his clothes and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top throughout.
itthaṁ sēnāgaṇō yīśuṁ kruśē vidhitvā tasya paridhēyavastraṁ caturō bhāgān kr̥tvā ēkaikasēnā ēkaikabhāgam agr̥hlat tasyōttarīyavastrañcāgr̥hlat| kintūttarīyavastraṁ sūcisēvanaṁ vinā sarvvam ūtaṁ|
24 Then they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to decide whose it will be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled, which says, "They divided my clothes among themselves, and for my clothing they cast a lot." Therefore the soldiers did these things.
tasmāttē vyāharan ētat kaḥ prāpsyati? tanna khaṇḍayitvā tatra guṭikāpātaṁ karavāma| vibhajantē'dharīyaṁ mē vasanaṁ tē parasparaṁ| mamōttarīyavastrārthaṁ guṭikāṁ pātayanti ca| iti yadvākyaṁ dharmmapustakē likhitamāstē tat sēnāgaṇēnētthaṁ vyavaharaṇāt siddhamabhavat|
25 But there were standing by the cross of Yeshua his mother, and his mother's sister, Miriam the wife of Cleopas, and Miriam from Magdala.
tadānīṁ yīśō rmātā mātu rbhaginī ca yā kliyapā bhāryyā mariyam magdalīnī mariyam ca ētāstasya kruśasya sannidhau samatiṣṭhan|
26 Therefore when Yeshua saw his mother, and the talmid whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, look, your son."
tatō yīśuḥ svamātaraṁ priyatamaśiṣyañca samīpē daṇḍāyamānau vilōkya mātaram avadat, hē yōṣid ēnaṁ tava putraṁ paśya,
27 Then he said to the talmid, "Look, your mother." From that hour, the talmid took her to his own home.
śiṣyantvavadat, ēnāṁ tava mātaraṁ paśya| tataḥ sa śiṣyastadghaṭikāyāṁ tāṁ nijagr̥haṁ nītavān|
28 After this, Yeshua, knowing that all things were now finished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty."
anantaraṁ sarvvaṁ karmmādhunā sampannamabhūt yīśuriti jñātvā dharmmapustakasya vacanaṁ yathā siddhaṁ bhavati tadartham akathayat mama pipāsā jātā|
29 A vessel full of sour wine was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and held it at his mouth.
tatastasmin sthānē amlarasēna pūrṇapātrasthityā tē spañjamēkaṁ tadamlarasēnārdrīkr̥tya ēsōbnalē tad yōjayitvā tasya mukhasya sannidhāvasthāpayan|
30 When Yeshua therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit.
tadā yīśuramlarasaṁ gr̥hītvā sarvvaṁ siddham iti kathāṁ kathayitvā mastakaṁ namayan prāṇān paryyatyajat|
31 Therefore the Jewish leaders, because it was the Preparation Day, so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
tadvinam āsādanadinaṁ tasmāt parē'hani viśrāmavārē dēhā yathā kruśōpari na tiṣṭhanti, yataḥ sa viśrāmavārō mahādinamāsīt, tasmād yihūdīyāḥ pīlātanikaṭaṁ gatvā tēṣāṁ pādabhañjanasya sthānāntaranayanasya cānumatiṁ prārthayanta|
32 Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him;
ataḥ sēnā āgatya yīśunā saha kruśē hatayōḥ prathamadvitīyacōrayōḥ pādān abhañjan;
33 but when they came to Yeshua, and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.
kintu yīśōḥ sannidhiṁ gatvā sa mr̥ta iti dr̥ṣṭvā tasya pādau nābhañjan|
34 However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
paścād ēkō yōddhā śūlāghātēna tasya kukṣim avidhat tatkṣaṇāt tasmād raktaṁ jalañca niragacchat|
35 He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you may believe.
yō janō'sya sākṣyaṁ dadāti sa svayaṁ dr̥ṣṭavān tasyēdaṁ sākṣyaṁ satyaṁ tasya kathā yuṣmākaṁ viśvāsaṁ janayituṁ yōgyā tat sa jānāti|
36 For these things happened, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him will not be broken."
tasyaikam asdhyapi na bhaṁkṣyatē,
37 Again another Scripture says, "They will look on him whom they pierced."
tadvad anyaśāstrēpi likhyatē, yathā, "dr̥ṣṭipātaṁ kariṣyanti tē'vidhan yantu tamprati|"
38 After these things, Joseph of Arimateh, being a talmid of Yeshua, but secretly for fear of the Jewish leaders, asked of Pilate that he might take away the body of Yeshua. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore and took away his body.
arimathīyanagarasya yūṣaphnāmā śiṣya ēka āsīt kintu yihūdīyēbhyō bhayāt prakāśitō na bhavati; sa yīśō rdēhaṁ nētuṁ pīlātasyānumatiṁ prārthayata, tataḥ pīlātēnānumatē sati sa gatvā yīśō rdēham anayat|
39 Nicodemus, who at first came to Yeshua by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
aparaṁ yō nikadīmō rātrau yīśōḥ samīpam agacchat sōpi gandharasēna miśritaṁ prāyēṇa pañcāśatsēṭakamaguruṁ gr̥hītvāgacchat|
40 So they took the body of Yeshua, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, according to Jewish burial practice.
tatastē yihūdīyānāṁ śmaśānē sthāpanarītyanusārēṇa tatsugandhidravyēṇa sahitaṁ tasya dēhaṁ vastrēṇāvēṣṭayan|
41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb in which no one had ever yet been placed.
aparañca yatra sthānē taṁ kruśē'vidhan tasya nikaṭasthōdyānē yatra kimapi mr̥tadēhaṁ kadāpi nāsthāpyata tādr̥śam ēkaṁ nūtanaṁ śmaśānam āsīt|
42 Then because of the Jewish Preparation Day (for the tomb was nearby) they put Yeshua there.
yihūdīyānām āsādanadināgamanāt tē tasmin samīpasthaśmaśānē yīśum aśāyayan|
