< Jonah 2 >

1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD, his God, out of the fish's belly.
Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish.
2 He said, "I called because of my affliction to the LORD. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice. (Sheol h7585)
He began, “In my agony I cried out to the Lord and he answered me; from the depths of Sheol I pleaded for help and you answered me. (Sheol h7585)
3 For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your breakers and waves passed over me.
You threw me into the deep, all the way down to the bottom of the sea. Water flooded all around me; your crashing waves rolled over me.
4 I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'
I said to myself, ‘The Lord has banished me from his sight. Will I ever see your holy Temple again?’
5 The waters surrounded me, threatening my life. The deep was around me. The end is upon my head.
The water swirled over me so I couldn't breathe; the deep sucked me down; seaweed wrapped itself around my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains. The earth barred me in forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, LORD my God.
I sank down to the base of the mountains; the earth barred me in forever. But you, my Lord, my God, brought me back up from the abyss.
7 "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD. My prayer came in to you, into your holy temple.
As my life ebbed away, I remembered the Lord; my prayer came to you in your holy Temple.
8 Those who regard worthless things forsake their faithfulness.
Those who worship worthless idols give up their trust in God's goodness.
9 But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay that which I have vowed. Salvation belongs to the LORD."
But I will offer you sacrifices, shouting out my thanks. I will keep my promises to you, for salvation comes from the Lord.”
10 The LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited out Jonah on the dry land.
Then the Lord told the fish to spit out Jonah onto the shore.
