Philippians 1
1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus; To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
キリスト・イエスの僕たち、パウロとテモテから、ピリピにいる、キリスト・イエスにあるすべての聖徒たち、ならびに監督たちと執事たちへ。
2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
わたしたちの父なる神と主イエス・キリストから、恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。
3 I thank my God whenever I remember you,
わたしはあなたがたを思うたびごとに、わたしの神に感謝し、
4 always in every prayer of mine for all of you, making my requests with joy,
あなたがた一同のために祈るとき、いつも喜びをもって祈り、
5 for your partnership in the Good News from the first day until now;
あなたがたが最初の日から今日に至るまで、福音にあずかっていることを感謝している。
6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
そして、あなたがたのうちに良いわざを始められたかたが、キリスト・イエスの日までにそれを完成して下さるにちがいないと、確信している。
7 It is even right for me to think this way about all of you, because I have you in my heart, because, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the Good News, you all are partakers with me of grace.
わたしが、あなたがた一同のために、そう考えるのは当然である。それは、わたしが獄に捕われている時にも、福音を弁明し立証する時にも、あなたがたをみな、共に恵みにあずかる者として、わたしの心に深く留めているからである。
8 For God is my witness, how I long after all of you in the tender mercies of Christ Jesus.
わたしがキリスト・イエスの熱愛をもって、どんなに深くあなたがた一同を思っていることか、それを証明して下さるかたは神である。
9 This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment;
わたしはこう祈る。あなたがたの愛が、深い知識において、するどい感覚において、いよいよ増し加わり、
10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be pure and blameless for the Day of Christ;
それによって、あなたがたが、何が重要であるかを判別することができ、キリストの日に備えて、純真で責められるところのないものとなり、
11 being filled with the fruit of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
イエス・キリストによる義の実に満たされて、神の栄光とほまれとをあらわすに至るように。
12 Now I desire to have you know, brothers, that the things which happened to me have turned out rather to the progress of the Good News;
さて、兄弟たちよ。わたしの身に起った事が、むしろ福音の前進に役立つようになったことを、あなたがたに知ってもらいたい。
13 so that it became evident to the whole praetorian guard, and to all the rest, that my bonds are in Christ;
すなわち、わたしが獄に捕われているのはキリストのためであることが、兵営全体にもそのほかのすべての人々にも明らかになり、
14 and that most of the brothers in the Lord, being confident through my bonds, are more abundantly bold to speak the word without fear.
そして兄弟たちのうち多くの者は、わたしの入獄によって主にある確信を得、恐れることなく、ますます勇敢に、神の言を語るようになった。
15 Some indeed preach Christ even out of envy and strife, and some also out of good will.
一方では、ねたみや闘争心からキリストを宣べ伝える者がおり、他方では善意からそうする者がいる。
16 The latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the Good News.
後者は、わたしが福音を弁明するために立てられていることを知り、愛の心でキリストを伝え、
17 The former insincerely preach Christ from selfish ambition, thinking that they add affliction to my chains.
前者は、わたしの入獄の苦しみに更に患難を加えようと思って、純真な心からではなく、党派心からそうしている。
18 What does it matter? Only that in every way, whether out of false motives or in truth, Christ is proclaimed. I rejoice in this, yes, and will rejoice.
すると、どうなのか。見えからであるにしても、真実からであるにしても、要するに、伝えられているのはキリストなのだから、わたしはそれを喜んでいるし、また喜ぶであろう。
19 For I know that this will turn out for my deliverance, through your petition and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
なぜなら、あなたがたの祈と、イエス・キリストの霊の助けとによって、この事がついには、わたしの救となることを知っているからである。
20 according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will in no way be disappointed, but with all boldness, as always, now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life, or by death.
そこで、わたしが切実な思いで待ち望むことは、わたしが、どんなことがあっても恥じることなく、かえって、いつものように今も、大胆に語ることによって、生きるにも死ぬにも、わたしの身によってキリストがあがめられることである。
21 For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
わたしにとっては、生きることはキリストであり、死ぬことは益である。
22 But if I live on in the flesh, this will bring fruit from my work; yet I do not make known what I will choose.
しかし、肉体において生きていることが、わたしにとっては実り多い働きになるのだとすれば、どちらを選んだらよいか、わたしにはわからない。
23 But I am in a dilemma between the two, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.
わたしは、これら二つのものの間に板ばさみになっている。わたしの願いを言えば、この世を去ってキリストと共にいることであり、実は、その方がはるかに望ましい。
24 Yet, to remain in the flesh is more needful for your sake.
しかし、肉体にとどまっていることは、あなたがたのためには、さらに必要である。
25 And since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
こう確信しているので、わたしは生きながらえて、あなたがた一同のところにとどまり、あなたがたの信仰を進ませ、その喜びを得させようと思う。
26 that your rejoicing may abound in Christ Jesus in me through my presence with you again.
そうなれば、わたしが再びあなたがたのところに行くので、あなたがたはわたしによってキリスト・イエスにある誇を増すことになろう。
27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the Good News of Christ, that, whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your state, that you stand firm in one spirit, with one soul striving for the faith of the Good News;
ただ、あなたがたはキリストの福音にふさわしく生活しなさい。そして、わたしが行ってあなたがたに会うにしても、離れているにしても、あなたがたが一つの霊によって堅く立ち、一つ心になって福音の信仰のために力を合わせて戦い、
28 and in nothing frightened by the adversaries, which is for them a proof of destruction, but to you of salvation, and that from God.
かつ、何事についても、敵対する者どもにろうばいさせられないでいる様子を、聞かせてほしい。このことは、彼らには滅びのしるし、あなたがたには救のしるしであって、それは神から来るのである。
29 Because it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ, not only to believe in him, but also to suffer on his behalf,
あなたがたはキリストのために、ただ彼を信じることだけではなく、彼のために苦しむことをも賜わっている。
30 having the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear is in me.
あなたがたは、さきにわたしについて見、今またわたしについて聞いているのと同じ苦闘を、続けているのである。
