< Matthew 8 >

1 And when he came down from the mountain, large crowds followed him.
Upon descending from the hill country He was followed by immense crowds.
2 And look, a leper came to him and worshiped him, saying, "Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean."
And a leper came to Him, and throwing himself at His feet, said, "Sir, if only you are willing you are able to cleanse me."
3 And he stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, "I am willing. Be cleansed." And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
So Jesus put out His hand and touched him, and said, "I am willing: be cleansed." Instantly he was cleansed from his leprosy;
4 And Jesus said to him, "See that you tell nobody, but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
and Jesus said to him, "Be careful to tell no one, but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift which Moses appointed as evidence for them."
5 And when he came into Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking him,
After His entry into Capernaum a Captain came to Him, and entreated Him.
6 and saying, "Lord, my servant lies in the house paralyzed, grievously tormented."
"Sir," he said, "my servant at home is lying ill with paralysis, and is suffering great pain."
7 And he said to him, "I will come and heal him."
"I will come and cure him," said Jesus.
8 And the centurion answered, "Lord, I'm not worthy for you to come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
"Sir," replied the Captain, "I am not a fit person to receive you under my roof: merely say the word, and my servant will be cured.
9 For I am also a man under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and tell another, 'Come,' and he comes; and tell my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."
For I myself am also under authority, and have soldiers under me. To one I say 'Go,' and he goes, to another 'Come,' and he comes, and to my slave 'Do this or that,' and he does it."
10 And when Jesus heard it, he was amazed, and said to those who followed, "Truly I tell you, I have not found so great a faith with anyone in Israel.
Jesus listened to this reply, and was astonished, and said to the people following Him, "I solemnly tell you that in no Israelite have I found faith as great as this.
11 And I tell you that many will come from the east and the west, and will sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven,
And I tell you that many will come from the east and from the west and will recline at table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the Kingdom of the Heavens,
12 but the children of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and grinding of teeth."
while the natural heirs of the Kingdom will be driven out into the darkness outside: there will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth."
13 And Jesus said to the centurion, "Go your way. Let it be done for you as you have believed." And the servant was healed in that hour.
And Jesus said to the Captain, "Go, and just as you have believed, so be it for you." And the servant recovered precisely at that time.
14 And when Jesus came into Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever.
After this Jesus went to the house of Peter, whose mother-in-law he found ill in bed with fever.
15 So he touched her hand, and the fever left her. She got up and served him.
He touched her hand and the fever left her: and then she rose and waited upon Him.
16 And when evening came, they brought to him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick;
In the evening many demoniacs were brought to Him, and with a word He expelled the demons; and He cured all the sick,
17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, "He took our infirmities, and bore our diseases."
in order that this prediction of the Prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, "He took on Him our weaknesses, and bore the burden of our diseases."
18 Now when Jesus saw large crowds around him, he gave the order to depart to the other side.
Seeing great crowds about Him Jesus had given directions to cross to the other side of the Lake,
19 Then a scribe came, and said to him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
when a Scribe came and said to Him, "Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go."
20 And Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head."
"Foxes have holes," replied Jesus, "and birds have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."
21 And another of the disciples said to him, "Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father."
Another of the disciples said to Him, "Sir, allow me first to go and bury my father."
22 But Jesus said to him, "Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead."
"Follow me," said Jesus, "and leave the dead to bury their own dead."
23 And when he got into a boat, his disciples followed him.
Then He went on board a fishing-boat, and His disciples followed Him.
24 And look, a violent storm came up on the sea, so much that the boat was covered with the waves, but he was asleep.
But suddenly there arose a great storm on the Lake, so that the waves threatened to engulf the boat; but He was asleep.
25 They came to him, and woke him up, saying, "Save us, Lord. We are dying."
So they came and woke Him, crying, "Master, save us, we are drowning!"
26 And he said to them, "Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?" Then he got up, rebuked the wind and the sea, and there was a great calm.
"Why are you so easily frightened," He replied, "you men of little faith?" Then He rose and reproved the winds and the waves, and there was a perfect calm;
27 And the men were amazed, saying, "What kind of person is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"
and the men, filled with amazement, exclaimed, "What kind of man is this? for the very winds and waves obey him!"
28 And when he came to the other side, into the country of the Gadarenes, two people possessed by demons met him there, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that nobody could pass that way.
On His arrival at the other side, in the country of the Gadarenes, there met Him two men possessed by demons, coming from among the tombs: they were so dangerously fierce that no one was able to pass that way.
29 And look, they shouted, saying, "What do we have to do with you, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?"
They cried aloud, "What hast Thou to do with us, Thou Son of God? Hast Thou come here to torment us before the time?"
30 Now there was a herd of many pigs feeding far away from them.
Now at some distance from them a vast herd of swine were feeding.
31 And the demons begged him, saying, "If you cast us out, permit us to go away into the herd of pigs."
So the demons entreated Him. "If Thou drivest us out," they said, "send us into the herd of swine."
32 And he said to them, "Go." And they came out, and went into the pigs, and look, the whole herd rushed down the cliff into the sea, and died in the water.
"Go," He replied. Then they came out from the men and went into the swine, whereupon the entire herd instantly rushed down the cliff into the Lake and perished in the water.
33 And those who fed them fled, and went away into the city, and told everything, including what happened to those who were possessed with demons.
The swineherds fled, and went and told the whole story in the town, including what had happened to the demoniacs.
34 And look, all the city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they pleaded with him to leave their region.
So at once the whole population came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw Him, they besought Him to leave their country.
