< Matthew 4 >
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
THEN was Jesus led away by the spirit into the wilderness, to be tempted by the devil.
2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry afterward.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards he became hungry.
3 And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread."
And the tempter coming to him said, If thou art the Son of God, command that these stones be made loaves.
4 But he answered and said, "It is written, 'Humankind cannot live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'"
But he answering said, It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.”
5 Then the devil took him into the holy city. He set him on the pinnacle of the temple,
Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and placed him on a wing of the temple,
6 and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, 'He will put his angels in charge of you.' and, 'In their hands they will lift you up, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'"
and saith to him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, “that he shall give his angels a charge concerning thee: and in their hands shall they hold thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.”
7 Jesus said to him, "Again, it is written, 'Do not test the Lord, your God.'"
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, “Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.”
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory.
Again the devil taketh him unto an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and their glory;
9 And he said to him, "I will give you all of these things, if you will fall down and worship me."
and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall prostrate and worship me.
10 Then Jesus said to him, "Go away, Satan. For it is written, 'You are to worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'"
Then saith Jesus unto him, Avaunt Satan! for it is written, “Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and to him only thou pay divine adoration.”
11 Then the devil left him, and look, angels came and served him.
Then the devil leaveth him, and lo! angels came and ministered unto him.
12 Now when he heard that John was delivered up, he withdrew into Galilee.
But when Jesus heard that John was cast into prison, he retired into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
and leaving Nazareth, he came and resided at Capernaum, a maritime city, on the confines of Zebulun and Nephthali:
14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying,
that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled, saying,
15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, toward the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.
“The land of Zabulun, and the land of Naphthali, the road to the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people sitting in darkness have seen a great light, and those living in the land and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned."
the people who sat in darkness saw a great light; and on those who sat in the region and shadow of death, even on them hath the light arisen.”
17 From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near."
From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is approaching.
18 And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers: Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
And as Jesus was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
19 And he said to them, "Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of people."
And he saith to them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they immediately left their nets and followed him.
Then immediately quitting their nets they followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them.
And going on from thence, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the boat and their father, and followed him.
Then they instantly quitting the ship and their father, followed him.
23 And Jesus went about in all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the Good News of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every sickness among the people.
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every malady among the people.
24 And the report about him went out into all Syria, and they brought to him all who were sick, afflicted with various diseases and torments, possessed with demons, and epileptics, and paralytics; and he healed them.
And there went out a report of him into all Syria: and they brought unto him all who had illness, the afflicted with various diseases and painful complaints, and the demoniacs, and lunatics, and paralytics; and he healed them.
25 And large crowds from Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan followed him.
And great multitudes followed him from Galilee, and Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from beyond Jordan.
