< James 2 >

1 My brothers, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ of glory with partiality.
ⲁ̅ⲛⲁⲥⲛⲏⲩ ⲙⲡⲉⲣⲕⲱ ⲛⲏⲧⲛ ⲛⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲟⲟⲩ ⲙⲡⲉⲛϫⲟⲉⲓⲥ ⲓⲏⲥ ⲡⲉⲭⲥ ϩⲉⲛ ⲟⲩⲙⲛⲧⲣⲉϥϫⲓ ϩⲟ
2 For if someone with a gold ring, in fine clothing, comes into your synagogue, and a poor person in filthy clothing also comes in;
ⲃ̅ⲉⲣⲉϣⲁⲛ ⲟⲩⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲓ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛⲥⲩⲛⲁⲅⲱⲅⲏ ⲉⲣⲉϩⲉⲛⲝⲟⲩⲣ ⲛⲛⲟⲩⲃ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉϥⲧⲏⲏϥⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ϩⲉⲛϩⲉⲛ ϩⲉⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲥⲡⲣⲉⲓⲱⲟⲩ ⲛϥⲉⲓ ⲇⲉ ϩⲱⲱϥ ⲟⲛ ⲉϩⲟⲩⲛ ⲛϭⲓ ⲟⲩϩⲏⲕⲉ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩϩⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲥⲗⲁⲁⲙ
3 and you pay special attention to the one who wears the fine clothing, and say, "Sit here in a good place;" but you tell the poor person, "Stand there," or "Sit by my footstool."
ⲅ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϭⲱϣⲧ ⲉⲡⲉⲧⲫⲟⲣⲉⲓ ⲛⲧϩⲃⲥⲱ ⲉⲧⲡⲣⲓⲱⲟⲩ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲁϥ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲓⲙⲁ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϫⲟⲟⲥ ϩⲱⲱϥ ⲙⲡϩⲏⲕⲉ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲁϩⲉⲣⲁⲧⲕ ⲏ ⲛⲅϩⲙⲟⲟⲥ ⲙⲡⲉⲓⲙⲁ ⲉϫⲙ ⲡⲁϩⲩⲡⲟⲡⲟⲇⲓⲟⲛ
4 Have you not discriminated among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
ⲇ̅ⲉⲓⲉ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛϣⲃⲧ ⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲉⲩⲟⲩⲟⲛ ⲛϩⲏⲧ ⲧⲏⲩⲧⲛ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲛⲕⲣⲓⲧⲏⲥ ⲛϩⲉⲛⲙⲟⲕⲙⲉⲕ ⲉⲩϩⲟⲟⲩ
5 Listen, my beloved brothers. Did not God choose those who are poor in this world to be rich in faith, and heirs of the Kingdom which he promised to those who love him?
ⲉ̅ⲥⲱⲧⲙ ⲛⲁⲥⲛⲏⲩ ⲛⲁⲙⲉⲣⲁⲧⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲁⲛ ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁϥⲥⲱⲡⲧ ⲛⲛⲉϩⲏⲕⲉ ⲙⲡⲕⲟⲥⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲣⲙⲙⲁⲟ ϩⲛ ⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲕⲗⲏⲣⲟⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲣⲟ ⲛⲧⲁϥⲉⲣⲏⲧ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲛⲉⲧⲙⲉ ⲙⲙⲟϥ
6 But you have dishonored the poor person. Do not the rich oppress you, and personally drag you before the courts?
ⲋ̅ⲛⲧⲱⲧⲛ ⲇⲉ ⲁⲧⲉⲧⲛⲥⲱϣⲃ ⲙⲡϩⲏⲕⲉ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲛⲉⲣⲙⲙⲁⲟ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲉⲧϫⲓ ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲛ ⲛϭⲟⲛⲥ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲉⲧⲥⲱⲕ ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲛ ⲉϩⲉⲛⲙⲁ ⲛϯϩⲁⲡ
7 Do not they blaspheme the honorable name by which you are called?
ⲍ̅ⲙⲏ ⲛⲧⲟⲟⲩ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲉⲧϫⲓ ⲟⲩⲁ ⲉⲡⲣⲁⲛ ⲉⲧⲛⲁⲛⲟⲩⲃ ⲛⲧⲁⲩⲧⲁⲩⲟⲩⲟϥ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲉϫⲛ ⲧⲏⲩⲧⲛ
8 However, if you fulfill the royal law, according to the Scripture, "You are to love your neighbor as yourself," you do well.
ⲏ̅ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲧⲛϫⲱⲕ ⲙⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲙϩⲉ ⲕⲁⲧⲁ ⲛⲉⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ϫⲉ ⲉⲕⲉⲙⲉⲣⲓ ⲡⲡⲉⲧϩⲓⲧⲟⲩⲱⲕ ⲛⲧⲉⲕϩⲉ ⲉⲓⲉ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲧⲉⲧⲛⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ
9 But if you show partiality, you commit sin, being convicted by the law as transgressors.
ⲑ̅ⲉϣϫⲉ ⲧⲉⲧⲛϫⲓ ϩⲟ ⲇⲉ ⲟⲩⲛⲟⲃⲉ ⲡⲉⲧⲉⲧⲛⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲉⲩϫⲡⲓⲟ ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲙ ⲡⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ϩⲱⲥ ⲡⲁⲣⲁⲃⲁⲧⲏⲥ
10 For whoever keeps the whole law, and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.
ⲓ̅ⲡⲉⲧⲛⲁϩⲁⲣⲉϩ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲡⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲧⲏⲣϥ ⲛϥϩⲉ ⲇⲉ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩϩⲱⲃ ⲛⲛⲟⲩⲱⲧ ⲁϥϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲉϥϭⲏⲡ ⲉⲡⲧⲏⲣϥ
11 For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not commit murder." Now if you do not commit adultery, but murder, you have become a transgressor of the law.
ⲓ̅ⲁ̅ⲡⲉⲛⲧⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲅⲁⲣ ϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲣⲣ ⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲁϥϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲟⲛ ϫⲉ ⲙⲡⲉⲣϩⲱⲧⲃ ⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲙⲏⲛ ⲛⲅⲛⲁⲣⲛⲟⲉⲓⲕ ⲁⲛ ⲛⲅϩⲱⲧⲃ ⲁⲕϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲙⲡⲁⲣⲁⲃⲁⲧⲏⲥ ⲉⲡⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ
12 So speak, and so do, as those who are to be judged by a law of freedom.
ⲓ̅ⲃ̅ϣⲁϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲓϩⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲛⲧⲉⲓϩⲉ ϩⲱⲥ ⲉⲩⲛⲁⲕⲣⲓⲛⲉ ⲙⲙⲱⲧⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓⲧⲙ ⲡⲛⲟⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲧⲙⲛⲧⲣⲙⲛϩⲉ
13 For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
ⲓ̅ⲅ̅ⲧⲉⲕⲣⲓⲥⲓⲥ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲟⲩⲁⲧⲛⲁ ⲧⲉ ⲙⲡⲉⲧⲙⲡⲉϥⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙⲡⲛⲁ ⲡⲛⲁ ϣⲁϥϣⲟⲩϣⲟⲩ ⲙⲙⲟϥ ⲉϫⲛ ⲧⲉⲕⲣⲓⲥⲓⲥ
14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him?
ⲓ̅ⲇ̅ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⲡϩⲏⲩ ⲛⲁⲥⲛⲏⲩ ⲉⲣⲉϣⲁⲛ ⲟⲩⲁ ϫⲟⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁⲓ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲉⲙⲛⲧⲁϥ ⲇⲉ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲙⲏⲧⲉⲓ ⲟⲩⲛ ϭⲟⲙ ⲛⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲉⲧⲟⲩϫⲟϥ ⲁϫⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ
15 And if a brother or sister is poorly clothed and may be lacking in daily food,
ⲓ̅ⲉ̅ⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲉⲩⲛ ⲟⲩⲥⲟⲛ ⲏ ⲟⲩⲥⲱⲛⲉ ⲉⲩⲕⲏⲕ ⲁϩⲏⲩ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲩϣⲁⲁⲧ ⲉⲧⲉϩⲣⲉ ⲙⲡⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ ⲡⲉϩⲟⲟⲩ
16 and one of you tells them, "Go in peace, be warmed and filled;" and yet you did not give them the things the body needs, what good is it?
ⲓ̅ⲋ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲟⲩⲁ ⲇⲉ ϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϩⲏⲧ ⲧⲏⲩⲧⲛ ϫⲉ ⲃⲱⲕ ϩⲛ ⲟⲩⲉⲓⲣⲏⲛⲏ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛϩⲙⲟⲙ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲛⲧⲉⲧⲛⲥⲉⲓ ⲛϥⲧⲙϯ ⲇⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲛⲛⲉⲧⲟⲩⲁϩⲉ ⲛⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲉ ⲡⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲟⲩ ⲡⲉ ⲡϩⲏⲩ
17 Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself.
ⲓ̅ⲍ̅ⲛⲧⲁⲓ ⲟⲛ ⲧⲉ ⲑⲉ ⲛⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲉϣⲱⲡⲉ ⲙⲛⲧⲁⲥ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲉⲥⲙⲟⲟⲩⲧ ⲕⲁⲧⲁⲣⲟⲥ
18 But someone will say, "You have faith, and I have works." Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith.
ⲓ̅ⲏ̅ⲁⲗⲗⲁ ⲟⲩⲛ ⲟⲩⲁ ⲛⲁϫⲟⲟⲥ ⲛⲟⲕ ϫⲉ ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁⲕ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϩⲱ ⲟⲩⲛⲧⲁⲓ ⲙⲙⲁⲩ ⲛⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲙⲁⲧⲟⲩⲟⲓ ⲛⲧⲉⲕⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲁϫⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲁⲛⲟⲕ ϩⲱ ⲛⲧⲁⲧⲟⲩⲟⲕ ⲉⲧⲁⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲁϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ
19 You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.
ⲓ̅ⲑ̅ⲛⲧⲟⲕ ⲕⲡⲓⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ϫⲉ ⲟⲩⲁ ⲡⲉ ⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲕⲁⲗⲱⲥ ⲕⲉⲓⲣⲉ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ⲛⲕⲉⲇⲁⲓⲙⲟⲛⲓⲟⲛ ϩⲱⲟⲩ ⲡⲓⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲥⲉⲥⲧⲱⲧ
20 But do you want to know, foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless?
ⲕ̅ⲕⲟⲩⲱϣ ⲇⲉ ⲉⲓⲙⲉ ⲱ ⲡⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲉⲧϣⲟⲩⲉⲓⲧ ϫⲉ ⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲁϫⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲥⲟ ⲛⲛⲁⲣⲅⲟⲛ
21 Wasn't Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
ⲕ̅ⲁ̅ⲁⲃⲣⲁϩⲁⲙ ⲡⲉⲛⲉⲓⲱⲧ ⲙⲏ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲁⲛ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲛⲏⲩⲉ ⲁⲩⲟⲩⲧⲙⲁⲉⲓⲟϥ ⲉⲁϥⲧⲁⲗⲟ ⲉϩⲣⲁⲓ ⲛⲛⲉⲓⲥⲁⲁⲕ ⲡⲉϥϣⲏⲣⲉ ⲉϫⲙ ⲡⲉⲑⲩⲥⲓⲁⲥⲧⲏⲣⲓⲟⲛ
22 You see that faith worked with his works, and by works faith was perfected;
ⲕ̅ⲃ̅ⲕⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲉⲥⲣ ϩⲱⲃ ⲡⲉ ⲙⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲁⲥϫⲱⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲓ ⲧⲉϥⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ
23 and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "And Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness;" and he was called the friend of God.
ⲕ̅ⲅ̅ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲥϫⲱⲕ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ⲛϭⲓ ⲧⲉⲅⲣⲁⲫⲏ ⲉⲧϫⲱ ⲙⲙⲟⲥ ϫⲉ ⲁⲃⲣⲁϩⲁⲙ ⲁϥⲡⲓⲥⲧⲉⲩⲉ ⲉⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲁⲩⲟⲡⲥ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ⲉⲩⲇⲓⲕⲁⲓⲟⲥⲩⲛⲏ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲁⲩⲙⲟⲩⲧⲉ ⲉⲣⲟϥ ϫⲉ ⲡⲉϣⲃⲏⲣ ⲙⲡⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ
24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.
ⲕ̅ⲇ̅ⲧⲉⲧⲛⲛⲁⲩ ϫⲉ ⲉⲣⲉⲡⲣⲱⲙⲉ ⲛⲁⲧⲙⲁⲓⲟ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲁⲩⲱ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲙⲙⲁⲧⲉ ⲁⲛ
25 In like manner was not Rahab the prostitute also justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them out another way?
ⲕ̅ⲉ̅ⲛⲧⲉⲓϩⲉ ⲟⲛ ϩⲣⲁⲁⲃ ⲧⲡⲟⲣⲛⲏ ⲙⲏ ⲛⲧⲁⲥⲧⲙⲁⲓⲟ ⲁⲛ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲉⲁⲥϣⲱⲡ ⲉⲣⲟⲥ ⲛⲛϥⲁⲓϣⲓⲛⲉ ⲁⲥⲕⲁⲁⲩ ⲉⲃⲟⲗ ϩⲓ ⲕⲉϩⲓⲏ
26 For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.
ⲕ̅ⲋ̅ⲛⲑⲉ ⲅⲁⲣ ⲙⲡⲥⲱⲙⲁ ⲁϫⲛ ⲡⲛⲁ ϥⲙⲟⲟⲩⲧ ⲧⲁⲓ ϩⲱⲱϥ ⲧⲉ ⲑⲉ ⲛⲧⲡⲓⲥⲧⲓⲥ ⲁϫⲛ ⲛⲉϩⲃⲏⲩⲉ ⲥⲙⲟⲟⲩⲧ ϩⲁⲣⲉ ϩⲁⲣⲟⲥ
