< Matthew 16 >
1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.
The Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from the sky.
2 But he answered and said to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'
But he answered and said to them, “When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'
3 In the morning, 'It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.' You know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.
When it is morning, you say, 'It will be foul weather, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.
4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and there will be no sign given to it, except the sign of Yaunan." He left them, and departed.
An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” Then Jesus left them and went away.
5 The disciples came to the other side and had forgotten to take bread.
When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
6 Yeshua said to them, "Watch out and guard yourselves against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
7 They reasoned among themselves, saying, "We brought no bread."
The disciples reasoned among themselves and said, “It is because we took no bread.”
8 But Yeshua, becoming aware of this, said, "You of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves about having no bread?
Jesus was aware of this and said, “You of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves and say that it is because you have taken no bread?
9 Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
Do you not yet perceive or remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered up?
10 Nor the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
11 Why is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees."
How is it that you do not understand that I was not speaking to you about bread? Take heed and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”
12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the yeast of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Then they understood that he was not telling them to beware of yeast in bread, but to beware of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
13 Now when Yeshua came into the parts of Qesarya Dephilipus, he asked his disciples, saying, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"
Now when Jesus came to the regions near Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
14 They said, "Some say Yukhanan the Baptist, some, Eliya, and others, Aramiyah, or one of the prophets."
They said, “Some say John the Baptist; some, Elijah; and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.”
15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16 Shimon Kipha answered and said to him, "You are the Meshikha, the Son of the living God."
Answering, Simon Peter said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17 And Yeshua answered him, "Blessed are you Shimon, son of Yauna, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
18 I also tell you that you are Kipha, and on this Rock I will build my church, and the gates of Sheyul will not prevail against it. (Hadēs )
I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church. The gates of Hades will not prevail against it. (Hadēs )
19 I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
I will give to you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
20 Then he commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he is the Meshikha.
Then Jesus commanded the disciples that they should tell no one that he was the Christ.
21 From that time, Yeshua began to show his disciples that he must go to Urishlim and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
From that time Jesus started to tell his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things at the hand of the elders and chief priests and scribes, be killed, and be raised back to life on the third day.
22 Kipha took him aside, and began to rebuke him, saying, "Far be it from you, Lord. This will never be done to you."
Then Peter took him aside and rebuked him, saying, “May this be far from you, Lord; may this never happen to you.”
23 But he turned, and said to Kipha, "Get behind me, Satana. You are a stumbling block to me, for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of humans."
But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, for you do not care for the things of God, but for the things of people.”
24 Then Yeshua said to his disciples, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.
25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, and whoever will lose his life for my sake will find it.
For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
26 For what will it profit a person, if he gains the whole world, and forfeits his life? Or what will a person give in exchange for his life?
For what does it profit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? What can a person give in exchange for his life?
27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds.
For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels. Then he will reward every person according to what he has done.
28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom."
Truly I say to you, there are some of you standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
