Joshua 24

1 Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of Israel, for their heads, for their judges, and for their officers; and they presented themselves before God.

Josué réunit toutes les tribus d’Israël à Sichem; puis il appela les anciens d’Israël, ses chefs, ses juges et ses préposés, qui se placèrent en présence de Dieu.

2 Joshua said to all the people, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Your fathers lived of old time beyond the River, even Terah, the father of Abraham, and the father of Nahor: and they served other gods.

Et Josué dit à tout le peuple: "Ainsi a parlé l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël: "Vos ancêtres habitaient jadis au-delà du Fleuve, jusqu’à Tharé, père d’Abraham et de Nahor, et ils servaient des dieux étrangers.

3 I took your father Abraham from beyond the River, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his descendants, and gave him Isaac.

Je pris votre père, Abraham, des bords du Fleuve, le fis voyager par tout le pays de Canaan, lui donnai une nombreuse postérité, et le rendis père d’Isaac.

4 And I gave to Isaac Jacob and Esau. And I gave to Esau Mount Seir, to possess it. And Jacob and his children went down into Egypt, and became there a great and numerous and mighty nation, and the Egyptians afflicted them.

A Isaac je donnai Jacob et Esaü; j’attribuai à Esaü la montagne de Séïr pour sa possession, Jacob et ses enfants descendirent en Egypte.

5 And I sent Moses and Aaron, and I plagued Egypt, according to that which I did in its midst; and afterward I brought you out

Je suscitai Moïse et Aaron, j’accablai l’Egypte par tout ce que je fis au milieu d’elle, après quoi je vous en fis sortir.

6 from Egypt. And you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued after your fathers with chariots and with horsemen to the Red Sea.

Quand j’eu fait sortir vos pères de l’Egypte et que vous fûtes parvenus jusqu’à la mer, les Egyptiens poursuivirent vos pères, avec chars et cavaliers, vers la mer des Joncs.

7 When they cried out to the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians, and brought the sea on them, and covered them; and your eyes saw what I did in Egypt: and you lived in the wilderness many days.

Ceux-ci implorèrent l’Eternel, qui interposa un épais nuage entre vous et les Egyptiens, fit retomber sur eux la mer et les submergea vous avez vu de vos yeux ce que j’ai fait à l’Egypte puis vous demeurâtes de longs jours au désert.

8 I brought you into the land of the Amorites, that lived beyond the Jordan: and they fought with you; and I gave them into your hand. You possessed their land; and I destroyed them from before you.

Je vous conduisis au pays des Amorréens, établis au bord du Jourdain, et qui vous combattirent; je les livrai en votre pouvoir, vous conquîtes leur pays, et je les exterminai devant vous.

9 Then Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, arose and fought against Israel. He sent and called Balaam the son of Beor to curse you;

Puis se leva Balak, fis de Cippor, roi de Moab, qui entra en lutte avec Israël, et fit appeler Balaam, fils de Beor, pour vous maudire.

10 but I would not listen to Balaam; therefore he blessed you still. So I delivered you out of his hand.

Mais je ne voulus pas écouter Balaam, et il dut au contraire vous bénir, et je vous sauvai ainsi de sa main.

11 You went over the Jordan, and came to Jericho. The men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hethite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I delivered them into your hand.

Puis vous traversâtes le Jourdain et arrivâtes devant Jéricho; et vous eûtes contre vous les possesseurs de Jéricho, les Amorréens, les Phérézéens, les Cananéens, les Héthéens, le Ghirgachéens, les Hévéens et les Jébuséens; mais je les livrai en votre pouvoir.

12 I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out from before you, even the two kings of the Amorites; not with your sword, nor with your bow.

Je vous ai aussi fait précéder par les frelons, qui ont chassé de devant vous les deux rois des Amorréens, ce que tu ne dois ni à ton épée ni à ton arc.

13 I gave you a land whereon you had not labored, and cities which you did not build, and you live in them. You eat of vineyards and olive groves which you did not plant.'

Je vous ai ainsi donné un pays qui ne vous a coûté aucune peine; des villes où vous vous êtes installés sans les avoir bâties, des vignes et des oliviers dont vous jouissez sans les avoir plantés."

14 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth. Put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.

A votre tour, révérez et servez l’Eternel avec droiture, avec sincérité; repoussez les dieux que vos pères ont adorés au-delà du Fleuve et en Egypte, et n’adorez que l’Eternel.

15 If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD."

Que s’il vous déplaît de servir l’Eternel, choisissez dès à présent qui vous voulez servir, soit les dieux qu’adoraient vos pères au-delà du Fleuve, soit les dieux des Amorréens dont vous occupez le pays: pour moi et ma famille, c’est l’Eternel que nous servons!"

16 The people answered, "Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods;

Le peuple répondit: "Loin de nous la pensée de renoncer à l’Eternel pour servir des dieux étrangers!

17 for it is the LORD our God who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way in which we went, and among all the peoples through the midst of whom we passed.

C’Est l’Eternel qui est notre Dieu, c’est lui qui nous a fait monter nous et nos pères, du pays d’Egypte, cette maison d’esclaves; qui a fait à nos yeux tant de grands miracles, qui nous a protégés constamment dans notre voie, parmi tous les peuples au milieu desquels nous avons passé.

18 The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD; for he is our God."

C’Est l’Eternel qui a repoussé devant nous l’Amorréen et les autres peuples habitant la contrée: nous aussi nous entendons servir l’Eternel, car c’est lui notre Dieu."

19 Joshua said to the people, "You can't serve the LORD; for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your disobedience nor your sins.

Et Josué dit au peuple: "Vous ne pourrez pas aisément servir l’Eternel; car c’est un Dieu saint, un Dieu jaloux, qui ne supporterait ni vos offenses ni vos péchés.

20 If you forsake the LORD, and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm, and consume you, after he has done you good."

Si vous abandonnez l’Eternel pour servir les dieux de l’étranger, à son tour il vous maltraitera et consommera votre ruine, après avoir été votre bienfaiteur."

21 The people said to Joshua, "No; but we will serve the LORD."

Et le peuple répondit à Josué: "Non, nous voulons servir l’Eternel."

22 Joshua said to the people, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen you the LORD, to serve him." They said, "We are witnesses."

Alors Josué dit au peuple: "Vous êtes témoins contre vous-mêmes, que c’est pour le culte de l’Eternel que vous avez opté!" Ils répondirent: "Nous le sommes."

23 "Now therefore put away the foreign gods which are among you, and incline your heart to the LORD, the God of Israel."

"Eh bien! Répudiez donc les dieux de l’étranger qui sont au milieu de vous, et tournez uniquement vos coeurs vers l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël."

24 The people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God, and we will listen to his voice."

Et le peuple dit à Josué: "C’Est l’Eternel, notre Dieu, que nous servirons, c’est à sa voix que nous voulons obéir."

25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem.

En ce jour même, Josué établit un pacte avec le peuple, et lui imposa une loi et des statuts à Sichem.

26 Joshua wrote these words in the book of the law of God; and he took a great stone, and set it up there under the oak that was by the sanctuary of the LORD.

Puis Josué consigna ces choses dans le livre de la loi divine; il prit aussi une grande pierre qu’il dressa en ce lieu, sous le chêne qui était dans le lieu consacré à l’Eternel.

27 Joshua said to all the people, "Look, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it has heard all the words of the LORD which he spoke to us. It shall be therefore a witness against you, lest you deny your God."

Et Josué dit à tout le peuple: "Cette pierre nous servira de témoin, car elle a entendu toutes les paroles que l’Eternel nous a adressées; elle serait un témoin contre vous, si vous veniez à renier votre Dieu."

28 So Joshua sent the people away, every man to his inheritance.

Et Josué congédia le peuple, chacun rentrant dans son territoire.

29 It happened after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being one hundred ten years old.

Après ces événements, Josué, fils de Noun, serviteur de l’Eternel, mourut âgé de cent dix ans.

30 They buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath Serah, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash.

On l’ensevelit dans les limites de sa possession, à Timnath-Sérah, dans la montagne d’Ephraïm, au nord du mont Gaach.

31 Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, and had known all the work of the LORD, that he had worked for Israel.

Israël resta attaché au Seigneur tant que vécut Josué, et tout le temps que continuèrent à vivre, après lui, les vieillards témoins de tout ce que le Seigneur avait fait pour Israël.

32 They buried the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, in Shechem, in the parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred kesitahs. They became the inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.

Quant aux ossements de Joseph, que les enfants d’Israël avaient emportés d’Egypte, on les inhuma à Sichem, dans la pièce de terre que Jacob avait acquise, pour cent kecita, des fils de Hamor, père de Sichem, et qui devint la propriété des enfants de Joseph.

33 Eleazar the son of Aaron died. They buried him in the hill of Phinehas his son, which was given him in the hill country of Ephraim.

Eléazar, fils d’Aaron, étant mort, on l’ensevelit sur la colline de Phinéas, son fils, qu’on lui avait donnée dans la montagne d’Ephraïm.
