Isaiah 36

1 Now it happened in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all of the fortified cities of Judah, and captured them.

Et il arriva, la quatorzième année du roi Ézéchias, que Sanchérib, roi d'Assyrie, s'avança sur toutes les villes fortes de Juda et s'en empara.

2 The king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a large army. He stood by the aqueduct from the upper pool on the highway to the Launderers' Field.

Et le roi d'Assyrie envoya Rabsaké de Lachis à Jérusalem contre le roi Ézéchias avec de grandes forces: et il fit halte à l'aqueduc de l'étang supérieur sur le chemin du champ du foulon.

3 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder came out to him.

Alors vinrent à lui Eliacim, fils de Hilkia, préfet du palais, et Sebna le secrétaire, et Joach, fils d'Asaph, le chancelier.

4 Rabshakeh said to them, "Now tell Hezekiah, 'Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, "What confidence is this in which you trust?

Et Rabsaké leur dit: Dites à Ézéchias: Ainsi parle le Grand Roi, le roi d'Assyrie: Qu'est-ce que cette confiance que tu montres?

5 Do you think that empty words are strategy and power for war? Now in whom do you trust, that you have rebelled against me?

Je te le dis, purs vains discours que de parler de tes moyens et de tes forces pour la guerre. Eh bien! dans qui te confies-tu, pour t'être révolté contre moi?

6 Look, you trust in the staff of this bruised reed, even in Egypt, which if a man leans on it, it will go into his hand and pierce it. So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

Voici, tu te confies dans l'appui de ce roseau cassé, dans l'Egypte, qui pénètre et perce la main de quiconque s'y appuie; tel est Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui.

7 But if you tell me, 'We trust in the LORD our God,' isn't that he whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, 'You shall worship before this altar?'"

Et si tu me dis: C'est dans l'Éternel notre Dieu que nous nous confions! N'est-ce pas lui, [te répondrai-je], dont Ézéchias a détruit les hauts lieux et les autels, et a dit à Juda et à Jérusalem: C'est devant cet autel que vous adorerez?

8 Now therefore, please make a pledge to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to set riders on them.

Et maintenant, fais donc un défi à mon maître, le roi d'Assyrie, et je te donnerai deux mille chevaux, si tu peux te donner les cavaliers pour les monter!

9 How then can you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Et comment repousserais-tu un seul général, l'un des moindres serviteurs de mon maître?… Ainsi tu mets ta confiance dans l'Egypte pour les chars et la cavalerie.

10 Have I come up now without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said to me, "Go up against this land, and destroy it."'"

Et puis, est-ce malgré l'Éternel que j'ai marché contre ce pays afin de le ravager? L'Éternel m'a dit: Marche contre ce pays et ravage-le!

11 Then Eliakim, Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in the Jews' language in the hearing of the people who are on the wall."

Et Eliacim et Sebna et Joach dirent à Rabsaké: Parle donc à tes serviteurs en syriaque, car nous le comprenons, et ne nous parle pas en hébreu aux oreilles du peuple qui est sur la muraille.

12 But Rabshakeh said, "Has my master sent me only to your master and to you, to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, who will eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?"

Et Rabsaké dit: Est-ce à ton Seigneur et à toi que mon Seigneur m'a envoyé pour dire ces paroles? N'est-ce pas plutôt à ces hommes assis sur la muraille, pour se nourrir de leurs excréments et s'abreuver de leur urine avec vous?

13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and called out with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

Alors Rabsaké s'approcha, et criant à haute voix il dit en hébreu: Écoutez les paroles du Grand Roi, du roi d'Assyrie.

14 Thus says the king, 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you; for he will not be able to deliver you.

Ainsi parle le Roi: Ne vous laissez pas abuser par Ezéchias, car il est incapable de vous sauver,

15 Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, "The LORD will surely deliver us. This city won't be given into the hand of the king of Assyria."'

et ne vous laissez pas inspirer par Ézéchias de la confiance en l'Éternel, quand il dit: L'Éternel nous sauvera! cette ville ne sera pas livrée aux mains du roi d'Assyrie.

16 Do not listen to Hezekiah, for thus says the king of Assyria, 'Make your peace with me, and come out to me; and each of you eat from his vine, and each one from his fig tree, and each one of you drink the waters of his own cistern;

N'écoutez pas Ézéchias! Car ainsi parle le roi d'Assyrie: Faites la paix avec moi, et rendez-vous à moi et vous vous nourrirez chacun de sa vigne et chacun de son figuier, et vous boirez chacun l'eau de sa citerne,

17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

jusqu'à ce que je vienne et vous emmène dans un pays pareil à votre pays, pays de blé et de moût, pays de pain et de vignoble.

18 Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, "The LORD will deliver us." Have any of the gods of the nations delivered their lands from the hand of the king of Assyria?

Ne vous laissez pas séduire par Ézéchias, quand il vous dit: L'Éternel nous sauvera! Les dieux des nations ont-ils chacun d'eux sauvé son pays de la main du roi d'Assyrie?

19 Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Iwah? Have they delivered Samaria from my hand?

Où sont les dieux de Hamath et d'Arpad? Où les dieux de Sepharvaïm?

20 Who are they among all the gods of these countries that have delivered their country out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?'"

et est-ce qu'ils ont sauvé Samarie de ma main? De tous les dieux de ces pays lequel est-ce qui a sauvé son pays de ma main, que l'Éternel doive sauver Jérusalem de ma main? –

21 But they remained silent, and said nothing in reply, for the king's commandment was, "Do not answer him."

Alors ils se turent et ne lui répondirent mot: car c'était l'ordre du Roi qui avait dit: Vous ne lui répondrez pas.

22 Then Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

Et Eliacim, fils de Hilkia, préfet du palais, et Sebna le secrétaire, et Joach, fils d'Asaph, le chancelier, vinrent auprès d'Ézéchias, les habits déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les discours de Rabsaké.
